After finding this old conversation and looking on the WWW I have not found a list of Hymns in Sawmill. Does anyone know of any resourceful lists? Only 2 have songs have popped out to me as I am noodling in it this a.m. Thanks

I don’t know of any lists, but not long ago I heard someone playing “On Jordan’s Stormy Banks” tuned in G model. It gave the hymn a bit of a different sound and feel than my e-flat major arrangement. I would be interested in a list if you find one.

Two or three years ago I had an email exchange with Wayne Erbsen (I was thanking him because his books were central to me learning to play a banjo.) I mentioned that I was really interested in playing hymns in the clawhammer style and would certainly buy such a book if he published one. His response was kind, yet he was certain that there wasn't enough demand.

His "Ignoramus" book does have Wayfaring Stranger in G modal. His book Clawhammer Banjo: Tunes, Tips, & Jamming has the gospel song "Warfare" in G modal. I had not heard of it before but I like it, though I haven't yet learned it.

We're both members of the Clawhammer and Old Time Gospel Lovers group. On that page I found one G modal tab, I'll Fly Away, written by Steelydan  . According to his page he hasn't visited BHO since last October. But perhaps you could contact him to see if he is aware of any other G modal hymn tabs.

Among my known sources for clawhammer hymn tabs I have Clawdan's (Dan Levenson) book Gospel Tunes for Clawhammer Banjo. But all of the tabs are G or Double C.  And I have Patrick Costello's book, Songs for Sunday, but again, are all in the key of G.

Here is one of my favorite links to banjo hymn tabs Nathan's Banjo Hymn Tabs, but all are in the key of G and just the melody. You'll have to figure out how to make it "claw-hammery" as Josh Turknett says.

I hope this helps. And I'm going to monitor your question to see if there are some suggestions.

Search for other hymns in the Aeolian Modes like the two listed.

I have not written a tab for this, but my recording is with my BHO media files:
