This weekend I attended the Ashe County Fiddler's Convention in Jefferson, NC (up here in the 'high country'). Through connections with Gilbert and Leigh Nelson's jam camp I was offered a one-hour, private lesson with the Duke of Drive himself. I'd read on the Fiddler's Convention website that someone was going to get this 'prize', but thought nothing of it. So for an hour this past Saturday morning I sat alone in the shade of a shelter at the Ashe County park with Terry Baucom. I'd play something for him, and then he'd proceed to show me tips, tricks, and licks to make it better. My phone is full of videos zoomed in on his hands. I was a little terrified at first, but he's a great, down-to-earth guy. And I played his banjo some to boot. Afterwards he led a jam. I switched to guitar (four banjos plus Terry!), sang My Little Georgia Rose, and got a smile and a compliment from Terry (and hey, I'm no singer). What a thrill to call out that song and then ask Terry Baucom to kick it off.

Memorable weekend for a banjo hack like me. Maybe I'm star-struck but I just wanted to share here.

I attended at Banjo Workshop, at Lorraine’s Coffee House in Garner, a couple years ago with Steve Dilling and Terry Baucum. Both were extremely nice, well spoken, complimentary to the students.
I had known Steve awhile but that was my first experience with Mr. Terry. It was as you described, a nice experience.
Congrats on winning that prize/experience.

That was a great story.

I love hearing about folks who meet someone who they admire, get to spend some time with them, and find out they are as just down home as the next guy.
