BHO member and good friend and incredible musician and luthier Ron Barnes passed away today . He had suffered a major stroke some years ago and was unable to play any more. He was one of the best bluegrass musicians I ever knew, adept at mandolin banjo guitar and dobro. He even played flute. He built a mean banjo, but was really known for his mandolins, which Lou Reid used on his Carolina Blue CD.
He also made tuner buttons retros and custom. He was very intelligent and could talk about most any subject.
He was an inspiration both before and after his stroke. He will be so missed by us here in southeastern Va.

Sorry to hear this Gary. Ron was still young, same age as me.

Vale Ron.

That's terrible news. I had no idea. His playing ability was top notch and I've heard several say he was the best banjo picker in Virginia.

Very sad news. I have 2 sets of Ron's buttons. Got the most recent set in January of this year. We would email back and forth periodically. He was a very nice man, and he will be missed. RIP my friend.

These were made by ron. When he first got into making repro buttons we got to talking and i asked him was it possible to make confederate flag buttons. He said a light bulb went off in his head, and that became the beginning of him doing custom buttons with logos and such.he glady made them for me and didnt charge me a dime. Sure am gonna miss him
