I need help. I am trying to plate a brass banjo hook. I made the solution as instructed. But for some reason, it is not plating nickel colour like it should. It is more like a dark copper or bronze. I don't know what i did wrong. It also rubs right off.

Are you using something with a relatively high success rate like a Caswell kit, or winging it?  There's a lot that can go wrong with the process for the newbie plater.

I just tried making the nickel acetate solution myself. I have never done it before. I thought it was easy, but I guess it is not as easy as I thought. I don't really have the money to buy the Caswell kit right now as I am using what money I have for my new gourd banjo.

With any plating process, the item being plated must be incredibly clean. No gerease, dirt, leftover chemicals, or even fingerprints. Otherwise, the nickel won't stick.

Can you just buy new hooks for about $1 each?

If they are somethin unique, I would go with the Caswell kit. I think I paid about $50 the last time I bought the basic nickel kit. I later tried to make my own copper plating solution and ruined a $200 1941 Indian Horn Face.
