Hello there!

I just got my first Banjo this week. Since my childhood I love the sound, mainly because of this Banjo Duel from Monkey Island. It would be a dream come true to be able play those melodies myself :)

I cannot post links yet, but you can easily find it with monkey island banjo duel on Youtube. I can play guitar, which hopefully helps me learning Banjo, but I am just starting to grasp the basics, like the styles etc. To me bloody beginner it sound like bluegrass in the Monkey Island clip but that's just an uneducated guess.

Have a nice day everyone!

Congratulations Eggers, Cannot say that I’ve seen the music/tab for monkey Island, but I would contact Microsoft since they were the ones that re-released it a few years ago onto the Xbox. Good luck with your search.

Hi, Eggers. Welcome to the Hangout and to banjo.

You're right that it's bluegrass being played.  Mostly random Scruggs style licks. Also a few melodic phrases. It's strange how each phrase ends abruptly on a wrong or odd note, but I imagine that has something to do with how the human player is playing the game.  All of the material is within reach of an advanced beginner or intermediate player.

Which is to say this is not stuff to start with. Focus on your lessons first -- whether you have a teacher or are teaching yourself with videos or books.  After you've learned some tunes and licks you might even begin to recognize some of what's being played and might be able to work it out by ear.

Of course, if you wait long enough someone here might tab out some of it for you. That happens sometimes.

You are right, the random notes have to be memorized by the player and then repeated as a simple memory puzzle.

Guess I will start getting into this style of playing first. And you are right, I will start with basic practice patterns and stuff, but it is really motivating for myself if I can practice something that I really want to play :)

I figured out the first three notes at least haha.

The banjo duel is one of my favourite parts of one of my favourite computer game series! Have fun with your banjo!

I haven't thought about this in probably 25 years! Thanks for bringing back fond memories.
