I've been playing the danged clawhammer banjo now for 6 months and have
memorized 6 tunes that I can play at speed. I play 5 or 6 times a week. I can chord and sing
a dozen or so songs and chord along with others as long as the tune is played in the
key of G. I have to use my tabs for the chord changes and the lyrics in several of the songs that I sing. My question is how many tunes can you play by heart and how long have you been playing???
I probably know all the words that I pick on the banjo to about 20-30 songs. I can pick hundreds of them, but not the exact same way as any of my banjo heros do. I pick them more the way I feel like picking them. I can pick the chords to thousands of songs if I want to follow along and not take a solo. How many songs I regularly play is much smaller...I probably regularly play 30-50 different songs and tunes on a regular basis. If someone asks for a tune I learned but haven't picked in a while, it may take a few minutes to get it back, depending on the difficulty. I have been playing over 40 years.
*and most people play these songs better than me.

Oh, gee, I've been picking for over 20 years and probably know the words to a 50 or more songs and can sing around 250 to 300 but don't have the words memorized; and can pick just about any vocal that I hear. Usually, if I'm in a jam and they play a song I've never heard, by the time the nod comes around to me, I have the key, the chord sequence and at least a simple break for it. Instrumentals are a little bit tougher to remember if I don't pick them fairly often.
