The grunt at the bridge is an actual grunt. Not sure why I did it, but it’s there.

Lovely playing Patrick. When I read the name Johnny Varro this morning, I had to check out his playing. Great Jazz pianist indeed. Have you two recorded anything with banjo and piano?

Thank you, David! Johnny is a legend. He’s played with so many heavy hitters (Louis, Bobby Hacket, Wild Bill, to name a few). He started his jazz career as the house pianist at Eddie Confon’s club in NYC in the early ‘50’s, then joined his band permanently. After that he was the pianist for the Dukes of Dixieland, the the Jackie Gleason orchestra. Today, at the young age of 89, he still travels all over the world playing gigs. Playing music, and going to the gym, keeps him spry as a 40-yr old. I’ve known Johnny since I was a teenager but we’ve shared the same stage but never recorded together. One of my life-long dreams, on the bucket list, is to go to his house and let the tape roll while we play.

I play TG also, and love Eddie Condon. That is too cool your father in law is Mr. Varro! I'll bet he has some stories to tell.

You must do some duo recording on banjo and piano Patrick! ASAP!

To me the grunt seemed to be one of those involuntary vocalisms which says, “Ah! i did it and it counded good!”

Any idea if Johnny Varro performed with the tenor guitarist Red Balaban? I’ve discovered him only recently. Very tasteful playing. I think he did not record much although he seemed to have a long career as a musician and I think either led a band or recorded at Eddie Condon’s club.

Have not but I haven’t looked. I know of him from one recording. His playing is steady, smooth, tasteful. Not flashy. I think he also played tenor banjo.

That is a great clip! There’s actually a whole set of tunes from that TV session I can’t remember if it’s in Switzerland or Germany… But the lineup on that set is mine blowing. Wild Bill Davison, Peanuts Hucko, Vic Dickinson, Buzzy Drootin. Those guys were on point!

and you're on point Patrick!......You need to get some banjo on disc with your father in law. I would love to hear the interaction in a duo setting.
