OK, I can see that this is a beat-up piece of roadside mechanic's butchering -- but does anyone have any idea what "the Dixie" logo means in script on the peg head? What *was* this before it became a rescue mission? (I wouldn't try to make it authentic, just playable.) I have relatives in New Hampshire, so I could have someone grab it and save the shipping until I next visit them...

This seems to be a product of the Buckbee factory from the turn of the 20th century, with several homemade repairs & aftermarket parts .

If that's true, then am I right in thinking that none of the hardware (especially the hex-shaped shoe brackets) is original?

Yeah, I reckon. Who cares?    I wouldn't give $125 for it without seeing it in person.  Might be worth that, but then I have a soft spot for interestingly cobbled-together POS instruments.

I like the idea of that way-too-heavy-duty dowel stick, but can't tell just by looking whether that concept was applied functionally....
