Ladies and Gentlemen:
I have been in a discussion as to if this song is bluegrass or not. I claim it is Americana and not bluegrass. But often, to my dismay, I have been wrong in life. I am not saying this is not a great song nor am I saying it is not done well. It is a beautiful song and it done well and is done very well. . And I am not saying this pretty young lady has not sung good bluegrass before. But, my question, is this video bluegrass? Thanks for conisdering.
Please vote if you are so inclined:
Yea: it is bluegrass
Nay: it is not bluegrass.
Thanks,
Ken

Americana is a term to me that encompasses all but not limited to: folk, spirituals, old-time, bluegrass, newgrass, Sousa type marches.

That being said, I would classify it as bluegrass, but not traditional bluegrass.

Following taxonomic tradition I would classify the song as:

Americana: Bluegrass (non traditional)

Definitely not Bluegrass. I would say it's a country ballad...but not a pop country ballad.

*and just to follow the rules of this post: Nay

Too slow and sappy for bluegrass. Actually, it's a nice song, but not one I'd want to learn.

I only listened for a minute, but more like a ballad to me.

Nae, not even close to my definition of Bluegrass. There have been times when a legitimate BG group for one reason or another, snuck a song such as this on an album, But that does not make it Bluegrass.

Good acoustic country ballad.

The instruments can be used in all styles...i.e. the theme from "Justified".

I have heard it said thus:

"If the woman is still alive at the end of the song, it ain't Bluegrass!"

If that Rule is valid, then,  NAY.

Other than that, it's a nice enough song.

Definitely not bluegrass but might not seem totally out of place in a bluegrass set if followed by an up-tempo song. I wouldn't categorise it as Americana either. I think that would also need more ingredients than a fiddle in the background.

I don't think it is bluegrass. Current country music would get my vote.

In the Grand Arena of the World, it does not matter.

But, in the tightly packed box of What Is Bluegrass? it could be a matter of like or deaf ! cheeky

I quite liked it so it can't be bluegrass.

Not Bluegrass.
It's singer-songwriter stuff.

I agree.  When I listened to it, it wasn't bluegrass to me but I didn't really know what to call it or how to "categorize it".  Paul R put his finger right on the button with the "singer-songwriter" designation (imo).  I'm sure there's a few other songs that fit this category also (done by bluegrass bands), but one that jumped out at me when thinking about this was "Across The Miles" by IIIrd Tyme Out.   Another good song - - but it also is more of the crooner/ singer/ songwriter style that I'm not really fond of - - especially in a Bluegrass setting.

Perhaps acoustic - country - pop but not bluegrass taking into consideration the singing style, arrangement of the instruments and the lack of a dominate back beat which is typically generated by a mandolin in the absence of a snare drum.

there are songs which have a bluegrass "feel" to them..that song..a very nice little ditty is not one of them...and on the other side of that coin there are non bluegrass songs that lend themselves very well to the bluegrass stage...fox on the run started as a lame R&R song...

then theres that version of rocket man...(iron horse i think?)...if i had heard that version before the elton john original i never woulda guessed in a million years that it was rock

Ken, when I saw this topic I wondered to myself if I would hear this song on Bluegrass Junction…Well, the answer is YES.

So that settles it, we’re all wrong…It’s bluegrass cheeky
