They're gonna take down the old Tappan Zee Bridge with explosives.

His comments will be interesting, eh. We all love to watch those vids of buildings being brought down, or mountain faces shredded with explosives, but a pro, like Figmo, has to see in ways we will never. Brad

I'm gonna miss the Tappan Zee. Always preferred routing that way instead of dealing with the GW.

You can still cross there. They built two new bridges - one for each direction of traffic - parallel with the old one.

Skip, I like the explosives guy that put an ad in the local paper than anyone suffering damage from his blasting project please come to their company construction trailer and file a complaint.  After several complaints were filed, he put another ad in saying the blasting would take place the following week!  Those "blasting" guys are pretty sharp ...... like Figmo!

I can’t remember the number of times I’ve been over the TZ. The backups at the tolls could be horrific at heavy traffic times, but I still preferred it tomgoing through NYC.

The new bridges are great.

I have watched a number of Cowboy movies with railroad bridges getting blasted. I also have seen Bridge over River Kwai a couple of times. I think this makes me uniquely qualified to assist in this project and will contact them today to offer my services.

I can't imagine how long it's gonna take to clear the debris from the Hudson.

Figmo, you describe "some folks" ... would these dudes be typical or the outliers/nutters?

...or are the nutters somehow typical nowadays?

That's funny Fig ..... sounds a lot like an engineer (not that there is anything wrong with that)!

Nobody complained when we set these charges off!

The article said they are laying chains on the river bottom so the debris will land on top of them and then cranes can lift it out. Interesting idea. Let's see if it works.

Those chains are an interesting idea.
Just by chance, I'll be crossing the new Tappan Zee bridge today and tomorrow(over and back). I'll wave goodbye to my old friend, the old bridge. Even as a kid I loved crossing that and the views it provided. The new one's views are much more obstructed.

Was supposed to happen today. Delayed until at least Tuesday due to concerns that high winds might blow debris into the shipping channel. Story here.

Thanks Skip..

When I saw it..
I thought they might of cut the upper structure as well..but did not..

After thinkin a bit...
I do not think they wanted to hit the supention cables on the new bridge..
That would be bad...
So they opted to keep it real simple...

Good call....

The lohud.com link - that's the first one - now has a series of short videos from a variety of different angles. Click on that, put the video up to full screen (at least on my browser, not doing that limits the view) and enjoy.

Are they going to haul away the actual bridge somehow?
