'Way back, I had a construction foreman who opined thusly on the work of a landscape "arteest" in our town:  "I may not be a judge of art, but I know a %#&%($' mess when I see one."

When disco came out we went to country rock & heavy rock & bluegrass festivals.

One of our local bars had a night where people brought disco records & you could stomp on them on the way in!

As far as the story goes I see a troll under a bridge with a fishing rod.

First, the guy says he’s bi-polar. Later, he says “no, I’m not.”

How dare you disrespect him by not referring to him by his preferred name of Ye.

I love crossword puzzles. If not for a local crossword puzzle, I wouldn't even know who Kanye is. I wish I still had the paper laying around so I could quote the clue directly. It was something about "Egotistic Rapper _____ West"
Now that I know who he is, I wish I could go back to ignorance, but somethings can't be unseen, somethings can't be unheard.

I feel like this question was just politics baiting. Kanye West is one of the most important musicians of the 21st century. The College Dropout is a masterpiece of creative production.

If this were a sincere question it probably should have been put in the "other music related" forum.

Yes, given his notoriety, and the timing of the question, that is an understandable deduction.  However, the question is merely a question. How people choose to respond to the question is not the responsibility of the person asking the question.

I meant to ask. What makes him the most important musician of the 21st century? Given the 21st century is only 19 years old, that seems a little presumptious.

I said "one of the most import" not "the most important" and the obvious implicature would be that he is one of the most important musicians of the 21st century thus far.

Kanye has a gift for thematic development and for getting the overall effect of the sound of a recording to match his meaning.  While there are acts that have better lyrical development like Eminem or superior musicianship like Radiohead, he brought the depth of modern production to bare on deep themes in a way that hadn't been done before.  Without Kanye West there would be no artists like Kendrick Lamar or Childish Gambino.

I apologize for misreading your post. Thank you for pointing out my error.

I wish I could say I was qualified to debate his talents and contributions because I think you'd be a fun person to debate. Alas, rap is one of the few musical genres I have a very low tolerance for.  I believe heavy metal is the other? Not sure. It's the one where everyone screams and screeches.  My son loves rap and has expended an enormous amount of energy proving to me that I do enjoy rap (okay, there is some that isn't annoying,) but as he is not a Kenya West fan. I googled the best of Kenya West just now and attempted to watch his video, but found the flashing lights irritating. I clicked to another page and tried to just listen, but again, I am so not a rap fan. I like to think I'm open to most types of music (Gospel, Country, Opera, Classical, Rock and Roll, Jazz, Blues, Blue Grass, numerous cultural music... it's a long list) but rap? Makes my skin crawl.  I can't get through thirty seconds of it.

I hope someone more qualified than myself is able to respond.

I do have another question. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "the depth of modern production to bare on deep themes" Could you clarify that? Or perhaps give an example?

Ye is certainly adept at self publicity. When he meets a narcassistic self admiration sponge it's a perfect match.

I didn't know that, but I just checked and he WAS there. What a great player he was!
As far as Kanye aka Ye, he is what he is. Self hype is part of show biz. I don't care for the vast majority of rap/hip-hop that I've heard, so I can't tell if he's great or not. Plenty of professionals say he is though, so I'll bow to their judgement.
