One of the many highlights to my trip to Allfrets Buffalo, was to be able to listen in, on an impromptu Jam session by two old friends, who hadn't seen each other in many, many years. They just sat down, and started playing......they didn't even have any picks....all with the thumb!

Pure Joy..........Eddy Davis, and Mike Vignola, in a corner of Hotel Lobby, Allfrets Buffalo 2018

I have much more video of this session, and hope to post more in the future....so stay tuned!

Thanks for posting. I wasn’t able to get to Allfrrets but in the Corner Record Shop In Grandville, MI I found two lp’s from Eddy Davis and the Hot Jazz Orchestra, Jazzology #’s J-67 and J-88.  Looking forward to listening to these.

David,

Thanks for posting that video of Mike and Eddy. Yes, it seems that they picked up just where they left off so many years ago. Mike and I were eating at the mall adjacent to the hotel when Mike shouted, "Hey Eddy". Eddy and Ruth came to our table and a thousand funny stories told by Eddy ensued. I never had the occasion to meet Eddy in person but I watched all of his tutorials and taped performances, then suddenly it dawned on me, "Holy smoke! That's Eddy Davis! I'm sharing a table with Eddy Davis!" I informed Eddy that I didn't recognize him as he "looked so much younger in person". Well, you know what followed; Eddy broke my chops - all in good fun of course. What a delightful couple Eddy and Ruth are - just like you and Julia ! Within ten minutes of our meeting, I felt I had known Eddy and Ruth for years. I really hope that Eddy attends more All Frets and / or other banjo events. He is a remarkably knowledgeable man with regard to music, music theory, and every other damned thing related to banjos and banjoists - past, present, and future, including the two young girls he lavished so much attention on in his workshop. It was great seeing you and Julia again. See you in Sturbridge? Hope so....

Eddy, if you're reading this - IM ALWAYS AVAILABLE FOR A FAVOR (LOL) - an inside joke

I too had a great time visiting with Eddy and Ruth and meeting Mike. When playing on stage in front of the audience the person I cared most about not screwing up in front of was Eddy, whose ear far outweighs the rest of the listeners and those on stage combined together. Oh well, there is always next year. (I must be getting old. I think I just threw a compliment in Eddy’s direction.)

I watched Dave playing in the lobby for two days before it dawned on me that he was the one and only Dave Cava. He wasn’t sporting a name tag so perhaps I have just outed him for not registering for the convention!!

As for Eddy and Mike, playing in the corner without picks, I missed it but for next year, I would be happy to start up a “Go Fund Me” campaign to get Eddy and Mike some picks and a hotel room. Felt bad they they slept in the lobby for 4 nights when they weren’t in the bar!!!! lol

PS Maybe all of Eddy’s friends reading this thread could send him a pick. That way he would end up with at least 3 or 4 picks!!

I always try to sneak in the back door at these events Ernie........and this time I was successful!

It was a pleasure to meet you Ernie. You are a top flight musician Sir, and I enjoyed your play very much. Hopefully the borders will remain open, and we'll get to meet up again in the future.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed getting a chance to listen in, and capture this. Eddy and Mike had such a great time, and so did everyone listening in. This was my first chance to meet Mike, and he is a hell of a nice guy, and great player. I wish I could have gotten more, but my battery was near it's end.

I wish I could have captured Eddys' workshop at this event. The man is a genius, and I don't mean it lightly. He will open your mind and ears to new things on this instrument, I guarantee it. If you ever get a chance to catch up with Eddy, go introduce yourself, and I'm sure you'll be impressed by this gentleman.

Have a great weekend Everyone,
dc

Thanks for posting this David. I wish I had known you were going to do this before I laid out the US Funds to come to AllFrets2018. I could have just watched the Laurel and Hardy antics right here at home and saved the 30 cents on the dollar.

A good time was had by all.

Cheers from north of the 49th.

(Word has it that a wall is being built between our house in Pickering and Eddy's apartment in New York!)

You captured that on video? Too bad the CEO of the National Enquirer wasn't a friend of mine. I could get him to purchase your video and bury it. It was very late that night or early the next morning depending on how many beers were consumed!

The CDN dollar is worth bugger all in comparison to yours. You can post if you want but they may not let me back into the US again. All my studying and practising on bass and banjo and everyone always asks about my recorder playing!

Short and Sweet......I love you Ernie! I wasn't quick on the draw, or I would've got more.
