Recorded just now in the garage during a bout of insomina, one of Woody Guthrie's wonderful children's songs, "Why, Oh Why." I memorized the lyrics a year ago but only in the last week worked up a way to play it. It'll get better with practice but I can never wait to record a song I've just learned, so you get to hear the warts. Played in double-C on a Goodtime Parlor.

I didn't think I could sing as high as this. Well, maybe I still can't, but this song in this key would have sent me into falsetto not long ago. I like to imagine I'm getting better at using my voice.

I forgot to add an instrumental break. It could use one.

"...because I put all the pennies into the telephone!" - No wonder Apple changed the shape of slot on the bottom of iPhone's a few years ago - people kept shoving pennies into the old bigger slots!

Well done! - I even like the so-called warts - they seem to fit the song very well. Your playing is just right and your singing is good - and it's an obscure Woody Guthrie song! Who could ask for more?

But boy has this Sound Off thread ever been dead and seems to be getting deader by the day. Hardly anyone seems to pay attention to it anymore - what a pity!

Marc Nerenberg - Thank you for the wonderful comment. I'm one of the guilty partiess--I don't have time to daily read the forum, and so many wonderful performances go by that I don't get to see or like or comment on. It comes from my being not retired. But I should still find the time anyhow.

That's a funny comment you made about iPhones and pennies! If I ever perform that song for kids, they won't have any idea why someone would want to put a penny in a telephone or what that would mean.

That's actually what I was going to observe when I typed out the quote from the song - but the iPhone thought popped into my head at that point, WayneConrad .

Thank you pickn5 and Janna. It's hard to go wrong with great material, and Woody sure could write a great song.

Judith511 thank you! Here is Woody's children's album:

Elizabeth Mitchell cut her own version of Woody's songs:

I learned this song from Elizabeth's version.
