Picking up this Bacon and Day for a song today.

I don't know much about these banjos, but it sure looks legit to me.

It's a plectrum, that's what I play.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Summoning Polle Flaunoe. He's the expert on this forum on Bacon & Day banjos.

Only thing I can add is; see if you can remove the resonator and look for the S/N. Then see if its recorded in the database.

I did end up getting it. Turns out its #14452 which makes it pre 1920. It was restored by Renee Karnes and has her nameplate inside as well as some receipts of work done. Very sweet banjo. If I told you what I got it for, you'd call the cops on me!

I do have an old entry for this serial number in my databases - however with a most likely wrong style designation.

SN 14452 indicates a late 1924 build.

The original style number is stamped at the dowel stick - No. "X" - an info about this will me able correcting the entries.

Polle,

Yes, you are correct, and the entry in your database is correct as well. I made a mistake in reading the database the first time. The name of the entry is also correct, I have receipts with Jeanette Harruff's name, and most flamboyantly, Jeanette's name is engraved on the side of the arm rest.

I stayed up a bit last night and did some more research. Jeanette was a member of the Peninsula Banjo Band, most of whose members are a little advanced in age. Her son sold me her banjo. It's been worked on by Rene Karnes.

There is even a spare set of strings in the case, Vega by Martin. Very light gauges compared to what I normally use. I'll have some pictures up shortly.

Thanks for the response Polle. Much appreciated.

One thing I am trying to find. I've read mention of an article on the history of Bacon and Day by John Hoft in a past All Frets issue, would anyone know how to get a copy of that article?

Do mail me your E-mail address off-line - I´ll then mail you the article as pdf-files.
