I read a thread about Maya banjos. I bought one off eBay- tenor, proper tonering, "gold" plated metalwork. It played well & sounded very good. I was very surprised to find that the rim was plastic and not solid either. The tuners were the Gibson Firebird kind and were awful (similar to those on my 70s Ibanez Artist which are also terrible). The flange was a nice design. In the end I used various parts of the banjo in one of my own-made banjos. Something in me says that plastic rims are all wrong but it sounded fine.
