story here.

Steely Dan has always seemed to be a love-em-or-hate-em kind of band - I don't know anyone who was lukewarm on them. To some, like me, the snarling and ambiguous nature of the lyrics - to say nothing of the remarkable confluence of rock, soul and jazz that they put into their melodies and arrangements - made them one of the most interesting American bands ever.

Others thought they represented the very worst of west-coast hyperproduction and smoothness.

Regardless, Becker was a remarkable force in American music. I'm grateful for his work.

Damn! They were coming to Windsor and I had hoped to see them, never got the chance in my youth.

Try to find any artist anywhere anytime that has such an intense, creative track record as Steely Dan. They produced five masterpieces in five years. So long, Walter, thanks for everything.

I think "Peg" was one of my most favourite Steely Dan songs. I get many rock guitar players angry at me as I feel the leads in Reelin In The Years and the Kingsmen's Louie Louie are the two best solos in all of rock music.

"Louie Louie" is a great guitar solo, agreed. So is Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl", even with just one note, but that is another story!

And between Larry Carlton and Skunk Baxter, The Dan's songs are just filled with great guitar parts. One of my faves is by Baxter on "My Old School".

Fagan has been touring Steely Dan without Becker this year, so mayhaps you can still go....

They are all great songs.

Whenever I hear Bodhisattva, everything stops.

Another tough loss of an incredibly gifted person for those of us still around...
