Notes: There are 2 tunes with the name North Carolina Breakdown. This is the other one (if I may borrow Bill Evans’s joke about Chinquapin Hunting, another pair of different tunes with the same name). Perhaps the better known NCB is a fiddle tune by Arthur Smith. The other one, the tune I have tabbed here, is a fine banjo creation by Sammy Shelor, the Grand Poobah of Punch. The first break is a fairly straightforward rendition of the tune, the second is the way I often play it, and the third is my attempt to capture some of Shelor’s improvisations.
