Why does Earl Scruggs pick with his thumb 6 times in a row just where he slides from 3rd fret to 9th fret to begin the second part? I was told one should not pick more than once with the same finger in succession. Is there a reason(s) for what he does? Vert curious!

I'm not as familiar with the particular lick you mentioned yet Dulcimermike, but I would assume Earl had a reason for it. J.D. Crowe often picked twice in a row with the thumb on some of his signature bluesy licks, and I think that was mostly for the way it changed the timing of the notes. In this case, the choice is probably a matter of the tone produced, the exact syncopation that results, or both.

Randy Lynn not Rangy. Song named for his second son.
