Notes: There are two midi sound files posted here: The first midi provides the sound of each string, from 5th to 1st, to help you get your banjo in an Open D tuning. The second midi follows the tab note for note. The midi is played at half speed to facilitate learning. The tab itself is a PDF file for easier access to those who might not have the TABrite program loaded on their computer.

Notes: Yep. This is the way Roy plays it (for the most part). Roy's been known to switch it up, using different licks and different positions on the fingerboard, but, like I said, for the most part this IS his arrangement.

Return to Dismal Swamp

Notes: This song has morphed into many different versions throughout the years. John McEuen first composed it in the 1960s as 'Dismal Swamp'. It later got some new life breathed into it when he rearranged it in the late-1970s and recorded it as 'White Russia' on the self-titled album 'The Dirt Band'. Later still it resurfaced once more in what we know today as 'Return to Dismal Swamp'. In my tab I've incorporated all the known versions of this song into one arrangement. It's a great banjo tune from the mind of John McEuen and it's worthy of your interest.

Some of Shelly's Blues

Genre: Country  Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time  Key: D  Tuning: Open D (aDF#Ad)  Difficulty: Beginner

Download: PDF | PDF

Notes: Based on the playing of John McEuen from the old Nitty Gritty Dirt Band album "Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy." This is just the opening line to the song but the remainder of the song can be done using a basic clawhammer 'bum-diddy' right-hand rhythm following the prescribed chord progression.
