Notes: First version of Ashland Breakdown on banjohangout! I was surprised when I couldn't find a version of this anywhere online, since it isn't that uncommon of a jam tune. I have tried to keep it simple, but any "hard" bits should have their fingerings written out. Enjoy!

Notes: Alan O'Bryant's banjo break from Aubrey Haynie - Doin My Time. Great syncopation on the rolls as he goes up the neck at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnnMgSnffOU&t=0m50s

Notes: He does a nice version of it in the Bluegrass 2000 album. This is his 2nd break where he really lets go and does it his own way with those backwards rolls and sixths. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn34_BZHkq8&t=2m17s

Forty Years of Trouble - Bela Fleck

Notes: My transcription for the 2nd banjo break by Bela Fleck, of Forty Years of Trouble in Aubrey Haynie's album, "Doin' My Time". Notice the cool bluesy lick at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD6v7E3WUIo&t=2m30s

Ginseng Sullivan - Melodic

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: D  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by rkfan100, updated: 10/14/2019
Download: TABLEDIT | PDF

Notes: My version of Ginseng Sullivan in melodic style since the song has a lot of melody notes. All fingerings provided. The first two bars are from Aubrey Haynie in the Josh Williams video, and the G chord part is inspired by Scott Vestal's Lost Indian which is also in D. Challenge: Find a way to play it without the triplets, with as little changes as possible.

Hot Burrito Breakdown - Scott Vestal

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: A  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert

Notes: Apart from the fairly "straightforward" melodic parts in the first break, the rest of part A could be described as Scruggs style but using his own unique choice of rolls and right hand positions to single out certain notes such as at the beginning of both breaks. Both B parts are mostly backward rolls over 7th chord positions with pinches to move from C to Bb to A. In bar 49 he uses a 1-3-5-3 roll to inch up from the F shape G chord to the D shape, and then the same for the C. Hope this helps shed light on what he is doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9LFcKIfLXw&t=1m13s

Notes: I couldn't find a version I was completely happy with, so I made up my own with absolutely no single string (except for two optional licks), in open G tuning. Thanks to Michael Corcoran for his guitar tab and Sean Ray for editing it.

Notes: This is Butch Robins' version from his excellent album "Forty Years Late". He uses his up the neck chromatic and melodic licks as well as syncopated rolls in some really surprising ways. All fingerings are provided. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBBjlFMKDVs&t=50s

Washington County Breakdown - Tony Mabe

Notes: Tony throws some cool Reno ideas in there that are worth stealing. Otherwise it's a good arrangement to start learning the tune with. I plan to tab out his second break as he does some nice syncopated rolls in that one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp_kUPOj3xY&t=49s

Notes: A nice version by Craig Smith in the ASH & W album. It's not as hard as you might think and a good intro to playing in F. Listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntQptkUvRsg&t=67

Where The Dim Lights Are The Dimmest - all backup

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate

Notes: By Joe Mullins with Longview. This break shows many of the finer details of Scruggs licks that are sometimes simplified, e.g. the muting of the last note in bar 5 and the hammer on in bar 7, and also using the open B string in bars 7 and 8. Backup for the whole song has been tabbed, but with some minor spots I couldn't figure out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ob3V7P6SRtA Same chords as "The Old Home Town".

Notes: Grasstowne's Justin Jenkins did a great break for Worried Man Blues on their album, "4". Here it is tabbed out. Lots of J.D. and Terry Baucom style single string licks here. Listen here: https://soundcloud.com/alanbibey/worried-man-blues#t=2m57s
