Alabama Jubilee (Mike Snider arr.)

Genre: Ragtime  Style: Exercises and Licks  Key: D  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 2/14/2021 - 2 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT | MP3: [Play] [Download] | PDF | MP3: [Play] [Download]

Notes: Capo 2. I chose "exercises and licks" as the style, because...that's basically what it is. Mike Snider showing his blistering technique from 1986's Mike Snider and Friends. Within is a veritable plethora of good stuff to adapt to your own repertoire.

Bach Cello Suite #1 (Jens Kruger)

Genre: Classical  Style: Classical  Key: G  Tuning: Drop C (gCGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 1/30/2021 - 3 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: Jens uses the drop C to grab the low C and C#. I tried to emulate his tempo changes, to provide a less machine-like feel.

Banjo Signal

Notes: Capo 2. My take of the Bela version of the Reno classic.

Blackberry Blossom

Genre: Traditional  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate

Notes: A fun collaboration via TablEdit between the Mad Scientist (Howsy-bee) and yours truly. Some nice variations on the old melody. I would like to think there's something here for most levels of playing.

Bluegrass In The Backwoods

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: Dm  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 4/28/2022
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: A Kenny Baker classic, arranged for banjo by Bob Black. To the best of my ability, this sounds like exactly what Bob played. For reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VhYTH5Z8uw

Boarman's Way (Jimmy Arnold)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: C  Tuning: Drop C (gCGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 2/18/2021
Download: TABLEDIT | MP3: [Play] [Download] | PDF | MP3: [Play] [Download]

Notes: An a cappella piece from "Strictly Arnold", kind of like a minor themed Home Sweet Home. I suppose the song title is in reference to Andy Boarman...perhaps Boarman played HSH in a similar fashion. At any rate, use the original recording for reference, since Tabledit is a computer app, and Jimmy was human.

Boarman's Way 2

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: C  Tuning: Drop C (gCGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate

Notes: I fixed a couple of perceived errors.

Cherokee Shuffle

Genre: Traditional  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: A  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 9/12/2022
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: Capo 2. First break in the style of Bill Keith (Beating Around the Bush), 2nd break in the style of Alan Munde (Strictly Instrumental). B part of 2nd break is my own musings however. Happy picking!

Clinch Mountain Backstep

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: G  Tuning: Sawmill (gDGCD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 2/5/2023 - 2 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: A little deviation from the norm. Raising the 2nd to C facilitates the lower register licks, and the droning C makes a nice ambient effect.

Crazy Banjo Rag (Jimmy Arnold)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 2/15/2021 - 1 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT | PDF

Notes: By request, Jimmy's abbreviated version of Howdy Forrester's "Wild Fiddler's Rag. All 3 breaks are essentially the same. I have however included 3 different ways to do the triplet lead-in to the Eb chord. Enjoy!

Crazy Creek (Cross Country)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Other  Key: A  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 4/23/2023 - 1 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: A Tommy Jackson fiddle tune. The first break is in the style of Bill Keith, the second is based on Ben Eldridge's playing (although he called it Cross Country). Capo 2.

Devil's Dream/Sailor's Hornpipe Medley

Notes: I originally learned this from Jimmy Arnold, But this arrangement is closer to Howdy's original. Capo 2. Mp3 and .pdf files are in the Tab discussion forum.

Doin' the Uptown Lowdown

Genre: Jazz  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: Dm  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate

Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: Best I can tell, written by Mack Gordon and Harry Revel for the film "Broadway Through a Keyhole"(1933) and performed by Isham Jones and his orchestra. The version I heard was by studio guitar ace John Jorgenson (guitar and clarinet). I tried to capture the vibe of the Jorgenson cover without going crazy.

Doing My "Thang" (Jimmy Arnold)

Genre: Ragtime  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert

Notes: From "Strictly Arnold". A lot of pinches and double-picked notes. Reminiscent of Merle Travis' guitar style.

Notes: Tab to an original I posted the other day. Not exactly bluegrass, but some interesting ideas. Note the tuning...2nd strind raised to C.

Flat Rock (Jimmy Arnold/Cliff Waldron)

Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 2/26/2022 - 2 Member Comments

Notes: From the album "One More Step with Cliff Waldron and the New Shades of Grass" (1972). A quick mover with a bunch of Jimmy's signature cool licks.

FMB (Trischka arr.)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 4/25/2021 - 3 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: Indeed another FM Breakdown tab, but with Tony T's youthful flair. From 1977's Banjoland. Note: measures 11 and 15 show both the open G and D string E note struck simultaneously. The E is a dead note, and not played, but having it there makes it sound "right". Lots of inventive scale ideas, and a couple of things that are definitely unique. have fun with it!

Gemini

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: Dm  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 12/22/2022
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: A cool tune from Jimmy Arnold (R.I.P.). Mostly melodic and a couple of single string licks, but completely devoid of Scruggs licks. Something different, I guess.

Hot Mandolin

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Other  Key: A  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 11/22/2023
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: My interpretation of Bill Keith's break on this mandolin piece. Transcribed from a live recording at Bern, Switzerland, 4/15/77. Capo at 2. Performance notes: This may or may not be how Bill fingered it, but it was the easiest way for me to get the notes. in measures 3, 11, and 27, barre with the index finger on the 9th fret, and use the ring to get the notes on the 11th fret.

J&W Rag

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: C  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 2/12/2021 - 2 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT | MP3: [Play] [Download] | PDF | MP3: [Play] [Download]

Notes: I believe this to be Jimmy's first recorded instrumental. From what I've gathered, he was 17-18 years old. Bandmate Wesley Golding provided the guitar lead. I have transcribed this as capo at 1, but am not certain that they weren't tuned slightly sharp from standard, and the transfer from analog to digital did the rest. Use your own judgment.

Leaving Texas (Jimmy Arnold)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 2/6/2021
Download: TABLEDIT | MP3: [Play] [Download] | PDF | MP3: [Play] [Download]

Notes: Another blistering instrumental of Jimmy's from the Rainbow Ride album. I thought the intro was a combination of triplets, but the exceptional ear of howsy-bee (Hans Holzherr) pointed out my mistake(s)! The 3 breaks Jimmy takes are all essentially the same, so I only included one and the ending. Have fun with this one.

Little Darlin' Pal Of Mine

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 6/30/2021
Download: TABLEDIT | PDF

Notes: My arrangement of the A.P. Carter song, taken to the banjo realm by Earl's Foggy Mountain Banjo album. I also have a video in the archives of this version.

M Street Rag (Jimmy Arnold)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: A  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 2/17/2021 - 3 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT | MP3: [Play] [Download] | TABLEDIT | MP3: [Play] [Download]

Notes: Capo 2. From the "Strictly Arnold" album. Some liberties were taken, notably with the last break. I'm not one to judge, but I believe the alcohol had kicked in by this point at the recording session...listen to the original slowed down, and you'll see what I mean. Still, a fun tune, and it has some signature licks in there.

Mole in the Ground

Genre: Old Time  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: A#/Bb  Tuning: Double C (gCGCD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 4/15/2022
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: From the Tony Ellis album "The Quest" (2005). Note the tuning...it is RELATIVE double C. Lower everything a whole step to be in tune with Tony. Reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJ5O-RLOz9M

Old Dangerfield

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: A  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 1/8/2022
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: Capo 2. Another hodgepodge of styles and ideas. Several cool licks to "borrow" and assimilate into your own playing. Just pay it forward after you make it your own!

Paddlewheel

Genre: Old Time  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: D  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate

Notes: From a live recording of Tony Ellis. Note the tuning...it is relative G tuning. Lower everything 2 1/2 steps to play along with Tony. Reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2agnVLa8YcM

Pickin' on the Five (Jimmy Arnold)

Notes: Capo 2. From the Cliff Waldron and the New Shades of Grass album, "One More Mile, One More Town, One More Time" (1973).

Red Wing

Genre: Traditional  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 12/11/2021
Download: TABLEDIT | PDF

Notes: A most satisfying arrangement (for me, at least). I combined phrases from a few of my favorite pickers, and added some things myself that tied them all together. Even though the melody is closely followed, there are a few fresh ideas. Enjoy, and adapt this to your own picking.

Ridin' High (Jimmy Arnold)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: C  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 2/9/2021
Download: TABLEDIT | MP3: [Play] [Download] | PDF | MP3: [Play] [Download]

Notes: Another quick mover. Maybe not quite as flashy as some of his stuff, but a great chord progression, and it's great fun to play!

Ruby's Song (Jimmy Arnold)

Genre: Unknown/None Chosen  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: C  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 1/30/2021
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: From "Strictly Arnold". Note the tempo should be about 160, not 88...I forgot to save it before uploading. It has a 'swing" flavor to it, and loads of fun to play!

Saint Anne's Reel

Genre: Fiddle/Celtic/Irish  Style: Other  Key: D  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 10/31/2023
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: An amalgamation of ideas from Fleck, Vestal and myself. Bonus: play it in two different keys without retuning. Capo at 2, key of D (modulates to E).

Salt Creek

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: A  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate

Notes: Capo 2 A friend of mine from YouTube asked how I would arrange this tune. This is pretty much the way I've always played it. Tony Trischka's Banjoland album was my first exposure to this Monroe instrumental, and as a kid, I tried to play it just like he did. Of course it evolved over time.

Sevastopol (Larry McNeely)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Other  Key: D  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 5/26/2023 - 3 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: A bouncy ditty from Larry's 1980 album Power Play. There are some weird triplet licks in the second break, but they will surely build your chops.

Sledd Ridin'

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Other  Key: A  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 3/16/2022 - 1 Member Comments

Notes: I really enjoyed piecing this one together. Some classic Osborne/Mills, and some more modern ideas from Hans Holzherr and myself. Capo 2, and jam away!

Snowflake Reel

Notes: Vic Jordan's arrangement of the Tommy Jackson tune. Played in C position, capo 2.

Notes: Bob Black's arrangement from his Ladies on the Steamboat album.

Strictly Arnold (Jimmy Arnold)

Download: TABLEDIT | MP3: [Play] [Download] | PDF | MP3: [Play] [Download]

Notes: Keeping the Jimmy theme going. Another barn burner (about 300bpm in Tabledit) that showcases the late, great Jimmy Arnold. A warmup is suggested before tackling this one full speed!

Stymied

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 8/6/2022 - 1 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: I realized when I was learning this tune, the only tablature around is from an old Banjo Newsletter, and from the Masters of the 5 String Banjo book. The Masters book only has the first break. So, I made my own. Please note that this is adapted for my own (in)abilities and taste. Also, Mr. Munde recorded this initially (Together Again for the First Time, 1977) with capo at 2.

Sunrise

Genre: Popular  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: C  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 10/30/2021 - 1 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT | PDF

Notes: An old standard, covered by the Country Gentlemen (Eddie Adcock) and before them, Les Paul. I tried to incorporate some of the iconic (to me) parts, whether it be Waller's chromatic guitar riff, Duffy's opening mando notes and quasi-bendy thing, Adcock's single string work, or Ben Eldridge's Scruggsy break. There is also a scalar descending thing from Bela, some of my own musings, and Les Paul's dramatic ending. Have fun with it, and make it your own!

Sweet Georgia Brown

Genre: Traditional  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 11/14/2021
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: An elaboration of some ideas from Hans Holzherr (howsy-bee). In the process of making it playble for me, I came up with a few new ideas. A very "bouncy" version indeed! As always, make it your own, and have fun with it.

Sweet Spot (Ben Freed)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Other  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Expert
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 3/20/2021
Download: TABLEDIT | PDF

Notes: This piece epitomizes (to me) Ben's joyful approach to banjo. It's a knuckle buster at his tempo. Pay careful attention to his syncopation...melody notes fall in strange places!

Temperance Reel

Genre: Fiddle/Celtic/Irish  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: G  Tuning: Standard Open G (gDGBD)  Difficulty: Intermediate

Notes: A mishmash of styles here. I used Michael Corcoran's tab as a template (with his permission) as it was very similar to how I play it. The first 2 breaks are a combination of my and Michael's ideas. For the 3rd break, I asked Hans Holzherr to throw one out there, and he obliged. The last break is ideas borrowed from Scott Vestal's playing. As always, use the tab as a gateway to your own way of playing it. Have fun!

The Keeper (Ben Freed)

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Bluegrass (Scruggs)   Key: E  Difficulty: Intermediate
Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 1/20/2021
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: My variation of howsy-bee's tab. I took a couple of liberties with phrasing, note choices, etc, to make it playable for me. Between this version and his, you may come up with your own variations! Tuning: eDGBD

Unhinged (Ben Freed) 2nd Break

Genre: Bluegrass  Style: Unknown/None Chosen  Key: D  Tuning: Open D (f#DF#Ad)  Difficulty: Intermediate

Notes: My first attempt at tabbing anything! I only have the demo version of Tabledit, so no midi file. Have fun with it!

Posted by stratovarious520, updated: 10/18/2023 - 1 Member Comments
Download: TABLEDIT

Notes: An old Howdy Forrester fiddle piece, covered by many banjo pickers. I took elements from several versions, and made my own. There are a couple of spots with T1T2 (or TIMI) 4 note rolls, but nothing too crazy. Have fun with it!

Yeah, Man (Mike Munford, Frank Solivan)

Notes: This will open a few doors for playing in the key of E using G tuning. This presents the 1st two breaks in the tune. Enjoy, and comment if you like!
