For Sale: Banjo Gibson Mastertone RB-4 - $3,900 USD

I am offering for sale a Gibson RB-4 five-string banjo, from the Greg Rich era, in excellent condition. The year of manufacture will be somewhere around 1988 and it is no longer possible to determine exactly, since in 2000 the rim was replaced, which comes from a Gibson Earl Scuggs banjo from 1986. The replacement was made by the famous banjo builder Clancy Mullins. Incredible tone ring from the Richard Kulesh AFP 515 factory, which you simply cannot beat. Resonator - beautiful polished walnut that has always been an ornament of the Gibson four-string. The neck is original with classic Flying Eagle inlays, the headstock is Remo Weather King. Bridge by Tim Purcell, Presto tailpiece. Hooks for the fifth string at the 7-10th fret. All other metal parts are original. Coordinator rods and truss rod are absolutely fine. The logo on the rim was probably damaged during the replacement...
The banjo has an excellent sound, adjusted. A hard Gator case is included in the sale.

For Sale: Lyon Tenor Banjo - €2,500 EUR ($2,887.48 USD)

For sale is a quality tenor banjo made by James W. Lyon. The serial number on the inside of the rim suggests that it was built in 2006. The walnut wood, Christmas tree binding and gold hardware remind of the Gibson Style-5 series.

- Tennessee 20 flathead sound ring (Sullivan) engraved with leaf motif on the outside

- Rim made of 3-ply maple and high-quality hardware (possibly also from Sullivan)

- Original Oettinger tailpiece

- Resonator with distinctive walnut veneer and concentric inlays

- Walnut neck with maple stripes and red decorative veneer stripes

- Ebony fingerboard with 19 frets and floral abalone inlays

- Black hard case

In all likelihood, this is a one-of-a-kind instrument, as I have no further information about the instrument maker. However, the banjo is very well made and in good condition. Slight marks are visible on the finish and frets.

For Sale: Tokai T-450R Banjo (Gold Star) 1979 + Video - €600 EUR ($693 USD)

For sale is a second Tokai T-450R banjo made in Japan 1979 in the same factory as he vintage Gold Stars. The banjo is a Gibson copy with a mahogany neck, reminiscent of the Style-00 series in terms of the peghead. It is a hoop banjo with decent power and clarity. The wood grain of the resonator veneer is particularly beautiful.

There are some age-related marks such as patina on the metal parts and a few small scratches in the finish (resonator), but these do not affect the overall appearance. On the contrary: for its age, the banjo is in very good condition.

The banjo has been cleaned and restored, the saddle and bridge have been adjusted for optimal string action, the skin has been tuned, and new strings have been fitted.

If you are interested in an affordable intermediate level instrument or are looking for a slightly lighter second instrument, you will find what you are looking for here.

For Sale: Hopkins Renaissance Banjo - $3,500 USD

2011 DP Hopkins Renaissance banjo, walnut neck and resonator, gold plating and engraved metal parts. Tony pass block rim, Hopkins tone ring.

This is a fantastic bluegrass banjo and while it shows some normal patina and wear from being played heavily as my main instrument for years, its sounds and plays great. It rings and has punch and clarity all the way up the neck. I kept it in shape and would get Paul Hopkins to do regular tune ups, so it currently has very little fret wear. It has an almost brand new remo head, and an engraved kerchner tailpiece. Keith tuners installed but will include all the original tuners (I believe they are waverly).

Hard shell case included. Strap and capo not included, but would be willing to negotiate for an additional cost.

For Sale: (Pending) Robin Smith Heartland Custom - $4,000 USD

2010 Robin Smith Heartland Custom banjo. Maple, art deco top tension style/paddleboard neck with a radiused (likely 12”) Brazilian rosewood fretboard. It is the most comfortable neck I have ever played - everything you want, hope, and hear about in a robin smith neck. And the rest of the banjo is no slouch. Huber HR 40 tone ring with a mahogany rim (one of robin’s unique ideas he developed with a few people - I didn’t love these in mahogany neck banjos, but combined with a maple neck it sounds really nice and balanced). Gotoh tuners and a matching BanjoLit wood arm rest. Currently had a Bryan hooper .656 Crowe spaced bridge, will include the original timeless timber bridge.

This is a really fantastic banjo that blends really well with other instruments. It is a dream to play. Will include a hard shell case and shubb radiused capo if desired.

For Sale: 1887 August Pollmann Mandoline Banjo, Rosewood Version - $1,000 USD

Unfortunately, it’s come time for me to let go of my August Pollmann banjo. I’ve not played it much in the last year or so, and it’s just collecting dust (quite literally). Open to reasonable offers.

I got this in trade several years ago and fixed it up. This instrument retains a tag (see last photo) from one F.H. Griffith of Philadelphia, Pa, a music and instrument dealer at the time, positioned right above the top back brace with the typical “Pat. May 3rd 1887” branding. While a plainer model, that is made up for by being the rosewood version, with bookmatched back (with striking sapwood inclusion) and sides (the fingerboard, dyed some, also appears to be rosewood). Typically, Pollmanns were made with either mahogany or rosewood back and sides, and on the rare chance with figured maple. I’ve commonly seen mahogany models, but rosewood examples not as often. The spruce top and mahogany neck finishes are original and untouched. To repair some of the cracks it had in the back and sides, I ended up sanding and refinishing it (unfortunately, it was colder weather at the time and the finish I used went on a bit heavier than I meant for it, and it cratered some on the sides). Some of the original finish’s crackling can still be seen in spots where I didn’t completely remove it. The fingerboard does have some divots in the first couple of frets, and there is some fret wear as well. The frets appear to be original. The middle back brace appears to be a replacement done sometime ago (it looked to have been worked on at one time long before I got it, along with a clear repair for the crack that ran along the treble side 3/4s of its length, which I repaired and touched up). There is a few hairline cracks on the back, though stable and for the most part cleated. There is one on the top which I’m pretty sure I also cleated. There is minor seam separation of the top on either side of the sound hole, but nothing serious nor affecting anything.

I replaced the missing peghead medallion with a faithful reproduction from Mark Ralston. I found a set of original 1888 pat. Grover pegs as it would have originally had (the screws on couple are a little tight to tighten them, but hold). The original bridge, nut, and pip were missing, and I made those components from ebony. It has a slight twist and a bit of upbow in the neck. I decided because of this to string it with nylon strings, and typically have kept it tuned around 1 to 1 1/2 steps below G (though I did try it once at G, but it sounded a bit restricted and tight). To attach the strings in the manner of how it would have been strung, given the details from the patent drawing for the Gerke tailpiece (this one being original to it), I enlarged the slots in order for the strings to fit (I know, I know, very sacrilegious by the purists). As I’ve read, the Pollmanns are believed to have been strung with steel (I would figure with ball-end strings), and in order for the strings to achieve adequate break angle at the bridge, the string wraps around the bar held in the slot by the extended fingers and underneath it before crossing over the bridge. I tied figure eight knots (a couple on the thinner strings), to secure them, but I could also see using small string beads with a knot (Strings By Mail carries them), to secure them as well. I decided to make that minor modification as I’ve seen several where they’re just tied on, and don’t provide the adequate break angle for the strings to stay in the bridge slots.

I’ve done some recording with it, and it’s been a wonderful instrument, but feel I’ve not been giving it the attention it deserves. I’ve thought of it, with the stringing and tunings, of it being my “banjo lute,” having a lutish or classical guitar sound. It lends itself well to slow, fingerpicked pieces, much of which I recorded on it, but its sounds ok clawhammer style.

I don’t have a case for it, but will be packed securely for shipping. I will also include a set of LaBella No. 17 nylon strings with it, as I had planned at some point to restring it with them. I currently have medium tension classic Nylguts on it with a wound fourth from an older set, and it’s quite tarnished, though playable.

The restoration video shows in fair detail the work I did to it: <a href="https://youtu.be/IzChHal0iLE?si=RQObfa7UsyAr3Fte" target="_blank">youtu.be/IzChHal0iLE?si=RQObfa7UsyAr3Fte</a>

One of the last recordings I made with it playing a Carolan tune, “Miss MacMurray”: <a href="https://youtu.be/aFOGgLeVAPs?si=75kXwkz5AF_nxep0" target="_blank">youtu.be/aFOGgLeVAPs?si=75kXwkz5AF_nxep0</a>

For Sale: NEW in Never Opened Box, Earl Scruggs 1985 Standard bano and case sn 0691 - $5,500 USD

This banjo was purchased for resale by my former store, Holloways Music in Monroe, NC. As other banjos came in this one was pushed to the back and eventually i made the decision to keep it sealed in the box. The last time this 41 year old banjo saw daylight was at Gibson. After 111 years in business (I was the third generation owner. My grandfather opened the store April 15, 1912) we closed in 2021. Since then it has been kept in my smoke free home. You know the specs, so I won't bore you with all of them.
This is not a scam...I welcome any questions. I will personally deliver the banjo within 250 miles and will watch as you open the box and become the first and only person to play this heritage instrument.
If you are over 250 miles away we can discuss arrangements.
This is the only site I have listed this, however you can see I am trusted and reputable by checking the items I sold on Reverb, under the name of Holloways Music Center. Many thanks for your interest..marion

For Sale: ON HOLD 1977 Stelling Starflower - $4,250 USD

Absolute powerhouse in the sweet spot of late 1970s Stellings! Before the Ebonol fretboard but still with the extra space after the 22nd fret and my personal favorite rim (3/4" block rim). This also happens to be one of the last mahogany banjos before Geoff quit making them until the Crusader in 2004! Brightwork is exceptionally clean and the banjo plays super nicely with terrific action. Has the original case in very good condition (most wear covered up with textured black tape).

Condition: there are some very superficial scratches and dents on the peghead rear and the resonator but none show up well in pictures.

For Sale: Walnut wood topped banjo, Zach Hoyt #5 - $945 USD

–This instrument is now reduced in price by 10%, from $1050 to $945, as it has been around for more than a year. —

This is another experimental wood topped banjo, or banjo hybrid of some kind. I was asked to make something similar in 2020, and have tried with more or less success to keep one in stock since then. The sound seems to me almost or about as loud as my regular banjos, but with more sustain and a different effect. The weight is about 3 pounds 2 ounces, and the banjo fits in an 11" case since it doesn’t have all the hardware on the outside of the rim that a conventional banjo would.

The neck and soundbox back are made from walnut, the sides of the soundbox (or the rim of the banjo if you look at it that way) consist of a slice of a Keller drum shell with a 1/16" walnut veneer bringing the total wall thickness to about 1/4". The soundboard is western red cedar, the fretboard is rosewood, and the peghead overlay is curly walnut. The tuners are Gotohs, the tailpiece is a modified No-Knot, and the strings are D’Addario EJ61, all from Smakula Fretted Instruments. The fret wire is nickel-silver and there is a two way truss rod in the neck. The bridge is different than what I usually make, since I wanted a full length foot to avoid the risk of denting the soundboard with small feet. The scale length is 25.5" and the nut width is 1-3/8". The finish is Tru Oil.

The banjo is currently set up with a tall 5th string nut to raise the 5th to the level of the other strings, but I can shorten the nut so the string rests on the 5th fret if desired. I can also add 5th string spikes for $5 each. If you want a case with this banjo I can ship it in a Superior bump case, model CD-1535, for $175. To see a video demonstration of this banjo (or whatever it is) please follow the link below:

Purchased new in May 2025. This is a beautiful, superbly designed and crafted instrument with typical Rickard tone, projection and playability. I am foregoing my career in clawhammer, after having a lot of fun learning from Lukas Pool - too many other styles and instruments to enjoy.

Wonderful, old-time Walnut/Dobson tone.

List price for the banjo, with the upgraded Walnut, is $2,400 (before tariffs, if applicable).
Rickard-branded Superior Hardshell Case.

For Sale or Trade: TRADED - 2014 Deering Sierra Maple with case - $1,800 USD

2014 Deering Sierra with the 20 hole 06 tone ring and modern fretboard inlays. Fantastic banjo, this has been my main player for the past few years. With the easy playing Deering neck, I end up playing this more than my Gibson Blackjack. Very good to Excellent condition, with normal wear on the armrest and head. I can replace the head with a newer Deering head and polish the hardware if you wish. …some folks like ‘em shiny, others like ‘em to look played.

Comes with Deering hard shell case.. Railroad spikes on the 5th string at frets 7, 9, 10 and 12. Strap not included. $100 shipping withinthe continental US or local pickup. Great banjo for someone looking for a modern era Sierra.
