Bridges: Sullivan Roasted Factory Floor Bridge

Submitted by BJD on 2/9/2015

Where Purchased: First Quality Music

Overall Comments

I wanted to try a .656 bridge on my Goldstar GF-85 (with Blaylock ring) and 11/16 bridge on my parts banjo (RK rim with Kulesh ring).  I decided to purchase the Sullivan Roasted.  At $10 you cannot beat this bridge.  The two bridges removed from the Goldstar and the parts banjo are high quality bridges made by top makers, quite a bit more expensive, and enhanced the sound quality of the two banjos.  The Sullivan Roasted bridges sound just as good, and even a little better on the Goldstar.  I can't be happier with the purchase.  These are really great bridges at less than 1/2 the cost of the others.

Capos: Banjo Highway 5th Capo

Submitted by BJD on 1/25/2014

Where Purchased: Online

Overall Comments

This 5th string capo is very convenient.  Easy to install.  The sound from 5th string is perfect.  The mechanism allows you to fine tune the 5th string for perfect pitch.  Works well on my Goldstar, RK-35, and my parts banjo.  I have spikes on the Goldstar and RK, but this capo is much more gentle on the 5th string than the spikes.  It is a bit pricey, but considering installation of spikes, and the wear and tear minimized on the 5th string, it is worth it.

John Pedersen

I took two banjos to John Pedersen at Amazing Grace Music Store in San Anselmo, CA, for setup.  The banjos are a Goldstar GF-85 with a 5/8 Kat Eyz maple/ebony top bridge, and a Recording King RK-35 with a .656 Kat Eyz maple/rosewood top Bridge.  Both needed a good set up.  John did an awesome job on these banjos.  The Goldstar action is properly set and much easier to play.  The sound is superb and it really pops.  It sounds like a much more expensive banjo.  The sound from the RK-35 is excellent, and with the action now adjusted properly is much easier to play, too.  I can't say enough about the quality of John's work.  Both banjos sound great! I was very pleased and surprised at how reasonable the charges were.  All of my future instrument work and repairs, be it banjos, guitars, ukuleles, or whatever, will be taken to John Pedersen.  I recommend him without reservation.

Mutes: Mike's Banjo Mute

This is a fantastic tool! I echo the high praise others have given this mute. I will add that with the mute attached to my banjo I can now hear backing tracks on my computer speakers while I am playing. I can also practice early mornings on the weekends without upsetting the rest of the family who sleep in. I can actually hear the notes I am playing more clearly. It is great for working out subtle issues like how I am striking the strings, pick squeak, etc. Outstanding!
