I have been searching for awhile for a way to amplify my banjo on stage. Usually I play into a mic like a thousand other pickers and it has worked quite well if I had the right mic and the sound wasnt too loud. I play with some electric guitar players occasionally and playing into a mic never quite cuts it. I saw Mike Mumford play with Dirty Kitchen a couple of months back and was VERY impressed with his sound (his playing is even more incredible but thats another topic for another day). After the show I was able to talk to Mike about his sound rig. He uses a MiniFlex mic placed inside his resonator, After extensive investigation ....LOL ....I found the guy that makes the MiniFlex...Ken Donnel. I was able to get him to make me a mic with the similar specs as Mike's mic.
My previous experience with pickups and mics was never that good. Each device I tried made my banjo sound like a different instrument. The Steling pickup made my banjo sound like a jazz guitar.....other attached mics have had feedback issues......I tried stick on piezo pickups that were terrible.
The MiniFlex mic is incredible. Easy to install, TRUE clean banjo sound. All the characteristics that you associate with a banjo come thru loud and clear. The only way I get it to feedback is thru an guitar amp at "Spinal Tap" sound levels. When I use it I run it thru a DI box into the PA. My DI box has an EQ that allows me to really scape the sound. Without the MinFlex my DI eq is almost useless. With the MniFlex my DI eq is another great tool to alter the tone from a dry snappy flat tone to a bright and shiny ringing tone.......and everything in between. Not only has the MiniFlex exceeded all of my expectations it has given me another tool (my DI eq) to use on stage. If you are considering an amplification system for your 'jo i HIGHLY recommend getting in touch with Ken Donnel. You can find him on the internet thru MiniFlex mics. Call this guy today....other than having Arthur Hatfield build me a banjo ....calling Ken was one of the best decisions I have made on my 5 string journey
