Other: BANJO MATE TONE ENHANCER

Submitted by Tom Schiltz on 11/18/2011

Where Purchased: From Doug Campbell and Little Mountain Music

Overall Comments

I bought this tone enhancer to (hopefully) help the tone of my 7 banjos to sound as great as possible. After talking with Doug Campbell about the tweaking of this accessory, I experimented with it to move it around the inside of the resonator 1/4 inch at a time to find the optimum sound I could get from each banjo. When I found the "sweetest sound" in the banjo I was working with I'd turn the enhancer 90 degrees and again listen to hear whether the tone was better or not. I'd keep doing this till I achieved the best sound. I then marked the top and bottom of the position on the inside of the resonator where the enhancer would rest permanently and applied the velcro piece for the permanent attachment.
To save moving the enhancer from banjo to banjo, I just ordered 6 more tone enhancers so I can have one in each banjo. I'd recommend this item for all banjo pickers to get optimum sound from your banjo.

Capos: Bilt-Rite Capo

Submitted by Tom Schiltz on 10/17/2011

Where Purchased: From Bill Adams

Overall Comments

Bilt-Rite is certainly a great name for this device. The sound & sustain of the strings when using this capo seems better with the capo in place then with an open neck. The notes are all true on the first four strings, and no tweaking is necessary after applying it, so it's a great time saver when changing keys. I'd like one for each of my banjos. This should have been invented years ago.

Mutes: Mike's Banjo Mute

Submitted by Tom Schiltz on 10/17/2011

Where Purchased: From Mike over the phone

Overall Comments

I bought this mute primarily because I play hard and my banjos are loud as are most banjos. It does a great job of quieting down the notes of the banjo, and my own hearing remains fine. I have mostly Nechville Enterprise bridges on my banjos and the mute fits them with no problem, even though they are rounded for compensation. The sound is quiet, and somewhat "dobro-like", and the notes have great sustain. It is easy to apply and is not in the way of my picking hand. It comes in a cloth pouch with a drawstring. It's the best mute I have purchased. I recommend it for all banjo pickers.
