Bridges: Bart Veerman Clawhammer Bridge

Submitted by Kev1 on 10/11/2014

Where Purchased: Directly from Bart

Overall Comments

I was looking for a high quality bridge for my new Pisgah Possum banjo. It already had a really good bridge that I liked a lot but I had been reading great things about Bart Veerman's bridges for a while and decided to try one.

I ordered a mystery wood bridge, no topping, 46 mm string spacing, 5/8 height. It cost 25$. All I can say is that I do not regret it ! It's (by far !) the best bridge I have ever tried, and I have bought bridges from very famous and very talented banjo builders ! Honestly, none makes my banjos sound as good as Bart's bridge does.

I eventually put the one I received on my Ramsey banjo but I'm definitely going to buy another one really soon for my Pisgah banjo.

I've tried it on both banjos (both have natural skin  heads by John Balch and already had great bridges), in both cases, the banjo came alive, more volume, more punch/pop, crisper, a little sustain than before, which I love.

Bart has been really helpful, he's the nicest guy and he sent the bridge extremely fast. I couldn't be happier.

If you're considering one of Bart's bridges, get one (or 6 if you have 6 banjos), for this quality I still can't believe it only cost me 25$ !

Thank you Bart for the quality of your work.

Pisgah: Possum (11' walnut)

Submitted by Kev1 on 8/8/2014

Where Purchased: Direct from Patrick Heavner

Year Purchased: 2014
Price Paid: 1150 ($US)

Sound

Great sounding banjo, definitely not bright, not too loud (thanks to the persimmon tone ring), perfect old-time sound I was looking for.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Only thing I had to do when I received the banjo was to set up the bridge and play. I installed a higher bridge, not that it was needed, just a question of personnal preference.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

The banjo is plain looking, which is NOT a bad thing to me, quite the contrary. The persimmon fretboard and peghead match the walnut neck and rim gorgeously. This is a really beautiful banjo, professionally built with appalachian hardwoods.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

I've looked at (admired) the banjo again and again, I can't see the slightest problem with it, every single part (wood or hardware) will last a lifetime I'm sure.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Patrick has been very helpful, answered every single e-mail I sent immediately and answered every question I had. Couldn't have been better / easier.

Components

I wouldn't change a thing, maybe install a natural head someday just to give it a shot but really no hurry here....

Edit: I have installed a natural goat head (by John Balch) and a mystery wood bridge by Bart Veerman since the review, the banjo sounds much better now - and it already had a great sound and tone. Perfect set up for my taste !

Overall Comments

I couldn't be happier with that banjo, it sounds exactly as I hoped and is exquisitely built with beautiful woods. Every aspect of the transaction with the Pisgah Company has been perfect.

I highly recommend this banjo to anyone looking for a great sounding / looking open back banjo.

Ramsey: student

Where Purchased: BHO Classifieds

Year Purchased: 2011
Price Paid: 850 ($US) (bought USED)

Sound

I had been playing clawhammer banjo for almost a year when I bought this banjo. I had been learning on a very cheap would-be bluegrass banjo so far and I knew what sound I was looking for. All I can say is that this banjo delivered! The sound is rich, full, powerful (you'll be heard at a jam!). Old time sound guaranteed!

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

My banjo has a Stern Tanning co calfskin head that was pre-mounted by John Balch, a Romero bridge and it is strung with Romero strings. Sounds absolutely great, plunky as I like it !

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

Very plain looking banjo, as advertised, a no-frills banjo. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Appearance Rating: not rated

Reliability

Haven't had the slightest problem with it so far. Looks like the banjo will live longer than I will (I'm 29 ; )

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Great transaction here on BHO! Ordered the banjo on a friday evening, got it 6 days later. (the banjo came from the US and I live in France)

Components

Every single part of the banjo seems very robust and quite likely to last a very long time.

I could not be happier, this banjo is perfect. A couple of friends played it and told me they loved it enormously. One of them has a Gold Tone 350+, he could not believe he paid more for his banjo than I did on mine and he loved the sound/playability of the Ramsey better. Again, a GREAT banjo!!! Thank you Mike Ramsey.
