Bridges: Sullivan Roasted Maple Bridge (11/16)

Submitted by jeremy blankenship on 9/3/2015

Where Purchased: First quality music

Overall Comments

Purchased this roasted maple 11/16 Crowe spaced bridge mainly because of the price. Figured was worth a shot. Overall I am pleased. The tonal qualities are well balanced an clear. Not a major improvement over the other bridge I had installed, but has a much cleaner tone. Well worth the money. Would've given it a 9 out of 10 except the ebony has a slight chip out of it on treble end. No effect on function but none the less a QC issue in my mind.

Bridges: Sullivan Old Growth Bridge 11/16"

Excellent bridge.  Found I preferred this one over some of the much higher priced bridges I have. The tone to my ear is brighter than normal. But not harsh. Very bell like on both banjos I've used them on. Very well built. An the price is beyond reasonable. Great product if you are looking to brighten up your tone. Very clear.

Spent some time at arthurs place this past week and let me tell ya I am blown away by his passion for banjos. He just loves them. Even though he only did some minor work for me while I was there it was his attitude about doing it that was so great. I got the chance to play several of his banjos he built and let me tell ya that there is not a bad one in his bunch. If you need any work done from spike installs to having a full banjo built do yourself a favor and contact arthur before you make a decision. You will not find better service or quality at a better price!!!

Other: Price Fiberglass Banjo case

Submitted by jeremy blankenship on 6/18/2009

Where Purchased: From Gary Price

Overall Comments

This is the best case on the market! This thing is built like a tank. Excellent construction inside and out. Great rubber seal and latches. My favorite feature is the two pockets inside to store stuff. They are huge and being able to get to my stuff without having to touch the banjo is great. I looked at the caltons very close but for less money and better features this is as good as it gets. If you are thinking of getting a flight case dont buy without checking these out. Worth every penny and gary was great to deal with.Only draw back is they are heavy. But gary said his new case covers have wheels so that will help. I love that I dont have to worry about my huber getting hurt in the case now. The best case you can get without a doubt. Check them out and see for yourself.

Setup

very easy to adjust. just remove resonator and turn.

Appearance

this product looks like gold foil in a square form. may look funny but really works.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

the material is a little thin but seeing as how its inside the resonator and wont be touched it should last just fine.

I was a unsure of this product. Thinking it would be just another gimic. Wow was I wrong. I installed this on my Rk80. After trying it in several positions i found the one i liked best. You can really change the tone just by rotating this product. Very cool. While I dont see this item making a huge difference on a top ofthe line custom, it really did make a difference on my RK80. This banjo was good before but sounds better now. Dont dismiss this product! For $20.00 its worth it.

I have been active in a forum about how FQMS has changed since bill's passing. I think that they are as good now as ever. I have been ordering from FQMS since I was a teenager, and have never had more than great things to say about there service. All my strings and accessories for the most part come from FQMS. Abosultely top notch all the time. Easy ordering, fair prices and great service. Thats a hard thing to find now a days. If theres any problems eric and jeff try very hard to make it right. I reccomend FQMS all the time. No better in the business period!!!

Sound

The sound and tone is amazing. perfect full and ring. The highs are high and the lows are lows.

Sound Rating: 9

Setup

I bought it used but it was set up very well and it plays real nice. The action is just a hair high but i am not going to full with it for now. May change bridge later on.

Setup Rating: 9

Appearance

It's beautifull. Nice wood grain. Cleanly installed inlays. Nice metsl finishing. It had one nick on the headstock but i bought it used.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

It seems very stout. It has that heavy feel and I beleive it will last a long time. Seems very dependable and I would definately use it at a gig without a backup jo.

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

Have not yet had to deal with them. I bought it used and the guy i got it from was great.

Components

The thin neck is a real nice feature. The inlays and binding are really nice too. I dont see any weak parts as of now.

For the price that these are new or used I dont think you can beat them. This is a pro level banjo at a intermediate price. I have played banjo a long time and this one would hang with some of the high high dollar stuff i have played. If it was stolen someone would die:) and then I would buy another one to keep me company in jail. Great Banjo :)
