Ome: Sweetgrass Megatone

Submitted by Lachlan on 7/29/2009

Where Purchased: Denver Folklore Center

Year Purchased: 2009
Price Paid: 2995 ($US)

Sound

This is a mahogany banjo that has a very full, warm sound. It can ring nicely up the neck with a great attack and quick decay, making it a great Bluegrass banjo. The d string has a powerful growl without being muddy.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

The setup was great when purchased, but, living close to Boulder, I was invited by Tanya to come to the OME factory to have the Sweetgrass set up by one of the builders. It came with spikes at the 7th and 9th frets.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

The mahogany used to build this banjo is beautiful and rich. They know how to treat mahogany at OME. The grain was properly filled and treated, and the binding is flawless. The peghead has a very nice shape with deep side cuts. The metal hardware is bright and shiny.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

The tailpiece is the OME Harp tailpiece, and the tuners, hooks, flange, tonering, etc, are all well made and will last forever. The finish feels plenty thick enough without being an acoustic impairment, while the neck is slippery and easy to move along.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

The Denver Folklore Center gives the OME a full year warranty, while the OME company gives it a lifetime warranty. Tanya makes dealing with OME a fun experience, and makes it obvious that they love banjos and people who play them at OME. Note the invitation for a free set up from one of the builders that I mentioned above.

Customer Service: 10

Components

This Sweetgrass came with a Snuffy Smith bridge. All of the hardware is OME. The tuners are very easy to use and hold tuning very well. The buttons are a cream color with slightly darker streaks, and pair well with the dark mahogany.

Components Rating: 10

Overall Comments

I would recommend this banjo to anyone who wants a solid, professional quality instrument that will last a lifetime. I would replace it if I somehow ever lost possession of it. I played this banjo several times before buying it, and compared it to a few other American brands. I liked the shape of the neck- it seemed like my very own banjo compared to the shapes of other necks. I really like the sound from this well crafted instrument. It is full and deep, sweet and clear. The first person who heard me play it after I bought it said, "Wow, I like that sound!" and he had a very nice banjo in his hands, too!

Overall Rating: 10
