Sound

This banjo has a very sweet sound, it sounds beautiful when playing Scruggs-Style or Melodic Style and has a nice sustain. I can make it sound like an old pre-war Granada or like an old Baldwin Style D. I get a lot of compliments when playing through an Acoustic Plus pick-up into a Peavey guitar amp. OME BANJOS set it up just right with a REMO head and a SNUFFY SMITH bridge. It's a very loud banjo and it's a lot of fun to play fast or slow numbers, I can steer it in any direction I want to, it produces and projects the sound any time. It's the best banjo I've ever played, it opens up my heart when I hear the sound. The OME Odyssey fires my musical imagination, it supports me composing tunes and it will be my lifetime musical companion.

Setup

The banjo was perfectly set-up by the OME Company, the only change I made was putting on light gauge strings. But that's a personal preference, I've been playing light gauge strings all my life. The string action was perfect from the very beginning and the neck plays very easy.

Appearance

It's a very beautiful banjo. Log on to www.omebanjos.com and see for yourselves. My banjo is custom-made from walnut and it's not engraved. Everything else is stock. It arrived in absolutely flawless condition, there was nothing to object to. I took it out of the box, positioned the bridge in the right place and tuned it and the banjo played and sounded great right away. The OME people really know how to build and set up a banjo.

Reliability

The banjo has 24-karat gold-plating, it hasn't come off yet and seems like it will last for a long time. The finish seems to be pretty solid and durable, too. I don't believe I will ever wear it through. I'm playing it at gigs all the time. It's totally reliable and holds the tuning all through the entire gig. I never have to tune it in between. I don't need another banjo.

Components

The OME Odyssey's outstanding features are the Megatone tonering, the Harp tailpiece, the solid flange with the g-clef sound holes and the wonderful and precise inlay work that makes this banjo a real piece of art. It's one of the great American banjos, probably the finest banjo made in the U.S.A. today.

Overall Comments

I think for the price you'll get the best banjo there is on the market today. I would probably give up to be a musician if it was stolen and become a drummer. I absolutely love this banjo. It allows me to express myself anyway I want to within my musical limits. My new banjo motivates me to continue to be creative and play with other musicians and contribute it's sound to any kind of music. Comparing the OME Odyssey to other banjos I've played I would like to subscribe to Charles Ogsbury's view when I ordered it: "It's the best banjo I've ever built". He was right!
