Year Purchased: 2008
Price Paid: 2300 ($US)

Sound

The sound is wonderful, to my ears. It's got a really nice tone. More gentle than a Mastertone type sound, as you'd expect. But not at all wimpy or twangy, it has plenty of range. It sort of seduces you more than whacking you on the head like my RB 250.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Setup was as close as to perfect as you could expect from a banjo that's bought across a distance. I will have to tweak a few things to my personal taste, but nothing at all major.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

It's beautiful to look at, too. The blond finish and minimal inlay pattern really fits the banjo's personality. The finish and attention to detail are what you'd expect from Cliff-totally top notch.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

No weak spots that I can see.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

A big reason I keep coming back to Cliff is the service. The workmanship is fantastic, of course, but he's a genuinely nice guy and very helpful.

Overall Comments

This is a very unique banjo, being so nicely built for one, but also because it has no metal tone ring. Which means it's very light, which I appreciate even more than I thought I would. Different tone and character than a Mastertone type banjo, but equally as pleasing.

Sound

Very loud and bright, with amazing sustain.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Didn't have to change a thing but get it back in tune.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

This is a beautiful banjo, it's the only walnut Magnum Opus Cliff has made. Pretty, but not over-the-top inlays, and very nice mother of pearl on the edges of the neck and resonator.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

It all looks pretty bombproof. Quality hardware and nice finish on the wood.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Extremely helpful and friendly. Lifetime warranty.

Customer Service: 10

Components

No weak points that I can see, everything is top notch. Standout components would be the wonderfully shaped neck, maple resonator, Keith tuners and Blaylock tone ring.

Components Rating: 10

Overall Comments

I would recommend that anyone looking in this price range ($2000+) give Cliff a shout. This banjo was not cheap, but for the quality it was a steal.
