Gold Tone: Cripple Creek 100R Plus

Submitted by lost_virginian on 9/5/2013

Where Purchased: Gold Tone Factory

Year Purchased: 2013

Sound

I am surprised that it sounds so good, I am a Deering fan, and while this won't replace my Calico, it does sound good to me. It has that nice Woody Guthrie folky tone.

Customer Service

I bought this when I was in Cocoa Beach visiting family, I took a chance and went to the store without an appointment as recommended. I was very happy with the way I was able to get what I wanted (CC 100+) with no resonator for clawhammer.

Overall Comments

Overall it's a great instrument and a great price. -1 for the Made in China sticker, it looks a little out of place they should stamp the wood or something to keep with a quality look.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Dave set up it when I bought it and it sound amazing, easy to play the action is perfect for me.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

It's a Deering, the attention to detail and appearance is legendary and mine is no exception. It's beautiful. I use SimaChrome on all the metal parts and that protects and shines like crazy

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

Everything on all my deerings has been great, I don't gig but as a recovering guitar player, I would always have a backup. Not so much for the banjo but the strings always break when you least expect it.

Reliability Rating: 10

Where Purchased: Guitar Center

Year Purchased: 2006
Price Paid: 349.00 ($US)

Sound

I am just learning, I also bought an old Kay banjo from a pawn shop. The Deering is head and shoulders above that.

Sound Rating: 8

Setup

The banjo was not set up at all, I had it set up a Drum and Strum in Warrenton, VA. They did a good job, it still sounds good.

Setup Rating: 2

Appearance

I like the understated look, nice satin finish. No flaws in the finish

Appearance Rating: 8

Reliability

So Far so good, it is my knock around banjo and holds up well when I am roughing it in my Airstream.

Customer Service

Never had to use them.
