Just started playing- or learning to play- in March, as a bucket list sort of thing. I've loved the banjo bluegrass sound since seeing Bonnie and Clyde and growing up with Jed and all his kin- like everyone else! Unfortunately, my wife is not in our club- but she does like dogs so there is that!
When i learned about banjo mutes, I thought my wife would really like one- on my banjo. I read reviews and learned of two other mutes made by banjo companies that would probably work fine, but the negatives were sometimes falling off and over time losing the felt that goes between the mute and bridge. Mike's was more expensive but didn't seem to have these problems.
The only negative I read about Mike's was that since it is secured by screws, if you play over the bridge this may be cumbersome, but being a new picker, I didn't find it hard to adjust or avoid this issue.
In the nutshell, it does what it says- it mutes the sound- possibly making it just a bit louder than an electric guitar played without an amplifier. You can easily do what makes bluegrass on a banjo- hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides, but there is a softer tone so less fidelity- it is a mute!
But the real treat for me was when the wife goes shopping or visiting- and you take this off- which is very simple- both on and off. After practicing with mike's mute- taking it off makes playing like going from no power steering to power steering- like pushing a 2-wheeled cart after you've taken the load off- like throwing a tennis ball after throwing a steel bearing! You just plugged the amp in!
If your wife sneaks back home on you- you may have to lie---"Honey- it's not what it looks like- my mute fell off!" It won't, but she doesn't know that! I'm 100% satisfied!
