Banjo mutes Reviews

I have been playing guitar for 30 years, but have recently taken an interest in learning how to play the 5-string banjo. I've been learning the three finger picking style ala Scruggs and am currently absolutely terrible at it. The banjo I recently acquired is a resonator and extremely loud, as they are designed to be of course, but this has brought about the need for a banjo mute to save my family's sanity. The banjo came with a mute that was ok, but not very effective at bringing down the volume enough to allow me to practice late at night (the only time I have available to practice). After searching this forum I stumbled upon Mike's Banjo Mute. This mute has proven to be very easy to use and most importantly, very effective at bringing down the volume to where I can practice without my family hating me. I can highly recommend it if you are in the market for a mute. Even someone like me, who has no clue what I am doing yet, can figure it out and get good use of it and that's says a lot about the quality.

A marriage saver, they call it. But too late. Have had my banjo for two years, before I bought this mute.

Anyways, now I can play and practice day and night without disturbing family and neighbors. I have not tried any competing mutes, but I really like the soft sound it puts on the banjo. It is as easy to attach to the banjo as a capo. Though it is attached near the the bridge.

Now back to practice...

Well, just to add yet another paean to the numbers of positive reviews of Mike's Banjo Mute. I bought it direct from the USA and it was shipped to Blighty. It arrived very quickly indeed (a week from purchase!!) so top marks to Brad who handled my purchase ... and the US postal service which usually measures its service to the UK in geological terms.

The mute came with a wee posh bag, and a spare screw just in case the fairies come at night and steal away one of them (don't scoff, it can 'appen). It fits on to the bridge very easily indeed and aesthetically looks industrially cool. I like it lots, even though it cost me (gulp) £34 with £15 postage (that postage is okay).  So after the initial trauma of purchase (being Scottish, this matters) I can say that the mute is definitely worth the money.

Oh, and by the way, you might be interested to know that it works. Nice quiet ringing sound. I live in a wee hoose, so for the neighbours ... and my wife ... this is important. Much better than the tissue paper shoved into the neck side of the bridge.

Go one. Buy one. You know you want to.

Okay--here's another believer.  I just received my Mike's Mute in the mail and tried it out on my 1930's Gibson with the Sullivan tone ring.  The brutal loudness was tamed and it still had a nice tone.  And I didn't have to wear earplugs when I played!   Huge.... This purchase was long overdue.

I bought Mike's Banjo Mute- Standard 5-String model. I have been using for three days now and I really like it. Simple to put on and remove from the bridge. My banjo still sounds good but is now quiet enough for late night practice. I think it's worth every penny and I highly recommend Mike's Banjo Mute.

After receiving this mute I am wonderfully surprised at the ease of installing and removing it. The quality seems very good and most importantly the sound quality while muting is most acceptable. Brad, at Mike's Banjo Mute website, was excellent in delivering great advice and prompt service as well.  I highly recommend this mute if a noise factor is an issue for you. It does its job.

I purchased Mike's banjo mute last week because of all the great reviews posted and it truly is an awesome and well-made product. I haven't been playing banjo very long and have only learned a few songs. Because of an accident in the past my hearing is extremely sensitive (I have noise-induced hearing loss) and every time I attempted to pratice with fingerpicks it was way too loud for my ears so I resorted to playing without them. When I found out about this product I ordered it right away and now it has made it possible for me to play with picks. It really is a nicely made and very effective product and I would recommend to anyone who wants to learn banjo much more quietly.

tl;dr: I highly recommend Mike's Banjo Mute. Easy to install. Great muting ability without compromising sound quality.

Like a lot of folks I like to mute my Banjos so as not to disturb my family. I've tried a lot of different mutes and methods, some good, some bad. Several folks on the forums were recommending Mike's Banjo Mute, so I thought I'd give it a try. I picked up one for 5-string and one for 4-string. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. They dampened the sound without hurting tonal quality. They also don't have the annoying "buzz" like some of the other mutes I've tried.

They were also very easy to put on with clear instructions on the site. Honestly, they're so simple you could figure it out from just looking at a picture, and I appreciate the simplicity. I only had one issue and it isn't about the mute design. I have an older (1930's) tenor and had to swap out the bridge with a modern one I had lying around. Just a heads up that if you have an older bridge with only two posts (one on each end) you may have fit issues. If you're comfortable changing bridges it's a trivial fix.

The only downside I've experienced so far is that I tend to rest my palm below the bridge when I use a plectrum on my tenors. The screw heads do stick up above the bridge far enough to be in the way. I've been adjusting to it, and I suppose it's probably a bad habit to rest my palm that way to begin with.

So, why 9 stars and not 10? My all time favorite mute is still the Richelieu Master Mute. I picked up a Richelieu tenor a few years back that came with one. While I love the design and sound, they aren't made anymore and are hard to find. They also like to stay on one 'jo and aren't designed to take on and off. (They slide over the bridge when you want to mute, then slide off out of the way)

Mike's is my new go to for mutes that can both stay on a single 'jo, and easily switch to another.

Mike's Banjo Mute was delivered yesterday.  It has exceeded my expectations.  I have a 1979 Stelling Whitestar, made of Curly Maple.  It's loud.  With this mute, the volume is now just as quiet, if not quieter than when I softly finger pick the guitar.  It's also about the same volume as if you were wearing high end ear protection.  You know how a Stelling has that "bell sound?"  well this mute really accents that ring.  The mute has exposed a beautiful, mellow tone that I hadn't heard before.   As I demonstrated for my wife, the true test, she actually closed her eyes while I play as if she was relaxing.  Right!?! I couldn't believe it either.  Without the mute...well, you know how that goes.  Anyway, I love it and highly recommend it.  Happy picking.

This is the third banjo mute that I have tried over many years.  The first mute was a piece of carved ebony that you 'wedged' onto the bridge.  It did a pretty nice job until it fell off periodically.  Also, it didn't fit all bridges.  The next mute was the brass one that slipped onto your bridge under the strings.  More than once, as I installed it, the bridge would scoot a little one way or the other.  Eventually, the felt lining wore off.  Both of these mutes quieted the banjo nicely without impacting the sound.  But Mike's mute is amazing.  It stays on much better than either of the others, I don't expect anything to wear out, and it should fit any bridge no matter how thick or how high.  But it amazing cuts the sound down so it can hardly be heard across the room.  And that's what was most important to my wife!!  This is a great mute.

Just purchased a radius Mute for my new Nechville Saturn. Trust me when I say Mike's Mutes are the very best out there and they last a long time. I purchased a Standard Mike's Mute about 10 years ago and I'm still using it. The cleanest, clearest sound you will get from any mute and at a volume that still allows you to hear musical nuances without disturbing anyone in the next room.

Do yourself a favor and spend the money, it's worth every penny!

I gladly give my recommendation for Mike's Banjo mute.  Only been using a short time but I love this mute and am ready to toss out the old ones completely. Very quiet (all family members agree!). It clamps easily onto the bridge and stays tight.  I've used a couple other banjo mutes and my biggest complaints were the old mutes either "wiggled off" or weren't  as quiet as I wanted (or... as others in the house wanted, I should say) - this one from Mike's solves both issues.

My girlfriend gifted me Mikes mute as a birthday present. Shipping as far as I heard from her was rather fast considering we live in Germany. The mute itself is amazing and as simple as it gets. It literally quiets down my banjo. Thats it. I get all the sound of my RK 35 just muted. I live in an apartment so I had to stop playing at night to not annoy my neighbors. With Mikes mute this isnt an issue anymore. I also tried the mute with my cheap Harley Benton banjo from Thomann in Germany and the sound even got better and softer.

I recently purchased my second Mike's Banjo Mute. I was 100% pleased with the first one I purchased after buying my first banjo.  I knew without hesitation if I ever bought another banjo I would buy another Mike's Banjo Mute. Well, I recently purchased a second banjo and the first thing I did was place an order for another mute from Mike. It arrived very quickly, and it fits & performs perfectly! It allows me to practice in the same room as my family without any complaints. With certain songs, I think the banjo actually sounds better with the mute on. I recommend Mike's Banjo Mute without hesitation.

I just received and tried out a Mike's Banjo Mute. I am impressed! The mute is easy to install and remove, seems to stay secure and really quiets the Banjo. I am especially impressed with the tonal qualities it imparts to my Banjo. Although the banjo is much quieter it really has a wonderful timbre and depth of tone to it. Quite a pleasure to play with the mute installed! I highly recommend this mute to anyone looking for a banjo mute. Defiantly a good investment!, I would purchase again. Shipping was fast , secure and Mike was a pleasure to deal with, I would purchase directly from him and not a third party.

I recently purchased a banjo mute online from Mike's Banjo Mutes for my  newest banjo, which has a radiused fingerboard.  This is the second banjo mute I have purchased from Mike's Banjo Mutes. The first was for my banjo with a flat fingerboard.  Both are high quality products made of solid materials that are put together well and will last a long time.  The price is fair for what you get.  The mutes work as advertised, reducing the banjo's volume without altering the intonation or pitch.  The mutes also add a little sustain.  Mike shipped the mute almost as soon as I placed my order and they both arrived well packaged  in sturdy boxes  protected by a simple cloth carrying bag and ample padding.  In sum, I'm very happy with Mike's Banjo Mutes and with the smooth and easy transactions I have had with Mike.  If you are looking for a banjo mute that works well and is simple to use, look no further.  Get one from Mike.

Living in Europe, I was at first reluctant to buy a mute overseas (shipping, waiting time), so I tried the locally available options: the Deering Banjo Mute, Gold Tone Ultimate, and Gold Iucci. The Deering mute and the Ultimate seem to be essentially the same product, just with different label and sold at a different price. Neither of them satisfied me. They all shed velcro fibers on the head, which made me wonder how long it would take until it is worn off, and putting them on the banjo moved my bridge at several occasions. The Iucci was better and also quiter than the other two, but I didn't like the muddy sound too much.

Eventually I went ahead and ordered Mike's Banjo Mute that I had read so much good things about here. Mike processed my order on the same day and the shipment was picked up on a Saturday morning. Seven days later (five business days), the Mute arived here in Germany, about a week or two before I expected it. Pleasant surprise. The first impression was how well made it looked. Good craftsmanship, hefty feel, and made to last. It took me a moment to figure out how to put it on the banjo, which turned out to be straight forward, easy and fast. But the real test was the sound.

Out of the four mutes I tested, Mike's Banjo Mute reduces the sound more than others and distorts it the least. It does add sustain and the banjo gains a bit of a harp-like sound, but it is not dull or muddy sounding. A pleasant sound, actually, on my banjo. The volume is reduced by a perceived 80%. An accurate percentage is difficult to estimate, but it was not louder than my voice during a normal, relaxed conversation. I doubt the sound can be heard through most walls, and this is the only mute where I feel I could practice at 3:00 AM at night and not bother the neighbors. I can also watch a movie or listen to an audio book without having to crank up the volume.

I have nothing bad to say about Mike's Banjo Mute. It works exceptionally well, is priced affordably (and a real steal compared to the Gold Tone and Deering offerings if you take craftsmanship, material and design into account), and it is easy to use. It just takes a few seconds to put it on or off without risk of moving or damaging the bridge. It came in a small velvet bag and two replacement screws, though I doubt I'll need these for many years, if ever. This is a very solid product and the good reputation it has is justified. I should have gotten it right from the start. It's the best banjo mute I know.

I'm a beginner and have found that at times I would try and play softly as to not bother people in the house. When I started reading reviews on banjo mutes they were mixed, with some people saying a piece of tissue worked better. Well, I am glad that I stumbled upon Mike's Mute because this thing is great!

Not Only does this device quiet the banjo, it allows me to pluck the strings as normal, work on my tone, and hear my mistakes. I was a little concerned that practicing with a mute and then playing without one would affect my playing, but not so. I actually think this mute will help me work on technique as I can pick at a normal level instead of trying to pick too softly. The quietness of the banjo is allowing me to hear some mistakes I didn't realize I was making, such as hitting the head of the banjo with my thumb pick or excessive pick noise.

Thanks Mike!

I was using a friend's Wright's Mute/Enhancer and loved it.  He let me borrow it to help with extending my practice sessions after the everyone went to bed.

I ordered Mike's Banjo Mute, and it is even better than the Wright's.  I couldn't be happier with the Mute while still maintain a good sound.  Makes practicing much easier and I'm able to play longer into the night.

I've tried previously 3 different mutes, which all reside in my garbage can.  Too hard to put on, won't stay on, don't mute sufficiently or produce a muddy sound.  I figured I'd try one of Mikes and boy, am I pleased.  It solves all of the above problems and then some.   Goes on really easily and stays securely until you take it off.
I have a custom archtop (which are loud to begin with a tone ring by Bill Blaylock of Marietta GA cast during the early 70s that makes it ring like a bell.  Later, I took it to Kyle K. Smith who did incredible setups and we agreed that I should get a Tony Pass Thin-Skirt block rim from his "old wood".  When Kyle finished his magic, it became a 5-string cannon.  What amazing tone!!
So loud that I practiced in a closed up room and neighbors 2 houses down said it sounded like I was on their porch.   Hence, I tried to muffle it a bit.  Fast forward to the 3 failed attempts mentioned above and I decided to get one of Mike's.  WOW!!  Finally a product that does exactly as it says.  It really does cut my volume, but that's not the most amazing part.  It retains the exact tone my banjo produces.  It just rings like a small bell now.  Can't believe it can retain my tone, unaltered.   Now, it just stays on my archtop so I can practice.  If I need to take the banjo out somewhere, it's really easy to take the mute off with no effect on the tuning or tone and easy to put back on when I return home.   Definitely a must-have for pickers of all levels of proficiency.  Good job Mike!!

Got the banjo mute late last week. Wow, couldn't be happier. I'm a lover of the banjo sound, and now that I finally have a banjo with an honest to goodness tone ring, I love it all the more.

But there are times when I just want to sit with the banjo after a long stress filled day (especially right now), with no picks, and just quietly pluck out a tune. And Mike's Banjo Mute is PERFECT for that. Who thought a banjo could be so soothing to play.

If your trying to stay married and still play your banjo early morning or late at night this is a must have. I was surprised at just how much volume it takes away without sacrificing alot of tone, so in other words you can still tell what your playing. As for me a beginner it's really a helpful tool to keep me practicing and not driving my whole house nuts. Also it shipped within 30 minutes of me buying it and and was at my house in no time. Thanks for the awesome mute Mike!

Mike, your mute is easily the best I have ever used. I get no buzzing, its easy to put on and take off, and the intonation is accurate. Even better, it doesn’t get in the way of my natural playing positions. As Mike has clearly written in the instructions, DO remove the mute before closing your case. The extra height of the mute on the bridge will put a lot of unneeded pressure on the head. Thank you Mike for making a great product ! Anyone thinking of getting one..don’t hesitate, just buy it.

being rather new to the banjo, I didn't know what to expect. So here's my results. This Mikes banjo mute I purchased directly from his web site, when placed on the banjo bridge reduces the sound by a liltle over half, maybe 5/8 reduction. Also in my experience it did not change the tune of any string. I think it is worth the money and a better than average product.

Mike’s Banjo Mute

I found a link to Mike’s on BH while reading reviews of the Sam Farris Tranjo. (Tranjo on order.) I’m using it on a Wildwood open back with “tuba phone” tone ring and bracket band. It doesn’t cheapen the sound but makes it quiet and bright with sustain, quietly complimenting the sound of the banjo.

It’s taken too long to post this review.

I’ve been using Mike’s Mute for probably close to a year now.  As the many other reviews drive home, Mike’s Mute is very effective at it job, and it is very well designed and well made.   My wife and daughter are very thankful that I made the purchase.

It has certainly allowed me to increase my practice time after the baby has gone to bed, but it has had an unexpected benefit to my picking.  The mute works so well that I became aware of how often my thumbpick was striking the head.  Just be hearing when it was happening, I was suddenly able to make the adjustments – almost subconsciously – to reduce the thumb strikes.  I can’t believe it, never would have predicted it, but that is what happened.

So I recommend the mute for that reason along with all the others mentioned in previous reviews.

This is the Best mute I have ever used. I have a wife and young daughter who strongly encouraged me to purchase a different mute for my new banjo.  I have tried a few different ones, and haven't been happy with the sound they produced. Mike's mute cuts the volume to an acceptable level, while not destroying the beautiful banjo sound. It's easy to install and remove for storage, and it even comes with a handy little storage bag. Mike emailed quickly to thank me for the purchase and to let me know it was on the way.  A nice little touch in a world where customer service  is frequently forgotten. Overall I couldn't be happier with my purchase and will definitely buy others as my collection grows.

I received mikes mute as a gift.  I love the way my banjo sounds with the mute on, it doesn't take the banjo feel away.  I have been playing my banjo at night after my family is asleep...I haven't bothered anyone yet.  My wife even said my banjo now has a "pleasant sound" so if that's not worth the 30 bucks, I don"t know what is. Thank you Mike for making a heck of a mute and allowing me to play more.

I purchased Mike's mute and it arrived on time.  I tried it out.  It is easy to use, and the sound is actually quite "sweet".  I know that is odd, but it is quite pleasant when playing at home and others are in the area.  I am not a sound expert, but would love to better understand the physics.

Recently picked up one of Mike's Banjo Mutes and I'm extremely impressed at how effective this device is. Installs (or uninstalls) in just a few seconds and makes a very noticeable difference in the overall volume of my banjo while still maintaining a pleasant tone (the sound somewhat reminds me of an electric guitar unplugged). It's still loud enough to hear but much more tolerable for my wife while I'm practicing at home, and it also comes in handy for trips/hotel rooms (used mine a couple of times at the end of a day during banjo clinics/workshops).

Mike's site was also easy to order from and his service was quick and friendly, would highly suggest his products if you're looking to make practice a bit more tolerable for anyone in your house!

I'm new to the banjo world, having only been playing a few months. So when I ordered my first mute a few weeks ago, I got the one highly related on Amazon -- the Gold Tone. Not really thrilled with it, I looked further, and found this site and all of the rave reviews about Mike's Mutes, and decided to give it a try.
I love Mike's Mute!! The tone it produces is much sweeter and more pleasant than the Gold Tone. It is also quieter, it doesn't buzz, and I'm not afraid I'm going to pull the bridge off! Really superior in every way IMO.
Yes, Mike's Mute costs more than others, but, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Get this one -- it is totally worth it.

I tried a number of different DIYs, including the eraser trick, before reading the reviews and settling on Mike's Mute for the banjo. I think the other reviews cover the good stuff so I'm just posting this to corroborate the other reviews. The problem with most mutes is they do too good of a job. What you really want is something that will hold a little sustain but quiet the instrument down (my dad used to put a hat over his trumpet bell)...Mike's mute does precisely that and I have an ancient cheapy Aria that I've modified over...well, let's just say since I was in high school and leave it at that, and it fit nicely on the stepped bridge which I was a little worried about. The screws are neoprene (smart move Mike) so there's not real chance the thumb screws will vibrate. In fact,if you look at the way Mike designed this, there are no real metal to metal joints- even though he made it out of a nice looking piece of brass, which I also like since it makes my banjo much more borg looking. I electrified my banjo a couple of years ago and this actually makes it sound better when plugged in.

Kudos to Mike- great mute, great idea and excellent implementation. I recommend it for all relationships.

Just got the Mike's Banjo mute in the mail.  Shipping was lightning fast and Mike contacted me right away to make sure I knew it was going in the mail.  Workmanship is top notch.

The mute works great and lowers the volume significantly.  It also change the tone, but in an interesting and pleasant way.  My Gibson Mastertone ESS sounds much more mellow with the mute on.  For late night practice, I really don't need a ringing Bluegrass tone and frankly I kinda dig the sound.

This is the best mute I've tried.  Highly recommended.

I am very pleased with my Mike's Banjo Mute because now I can practice any time of day. Previously, I would not practice when my wife was sleeping, on the phone, or playing her mandolin. When she watched TV she would turn up the volume when I practiced. My wife is very happy with the mute. My banjo instructor recommended Mike's Banjo Mute saying that before buying the mute his wife often found his loud picking annoying. The mute is easily installed on the bridge, and its small size does not interfere with my right hand. The  brass plate that rests on the strings does not create strange harmonics like rubber or plastic on some mutes. With the mute installed my banjo has a pleasant sound. I can practice both left and right hand techniques. For me there is only one negative. As a beginner/intermediate picker practicing a memorized song with the mute, I sometimes 'forget' parts of a song because I don't hear the normal banjo tones.

Received it in the mail promptly after ordering from Mike's website.

I am using it to tone down a very loud Deering Maple Blossom banjo with resonator.   It certainly does that.   It hushes it down in a big way.   The tone is very quiet but pleasing.   Ideal for practicing in close proximity to other people, but the tone is very different.

That said, I still think stuffing a rag behind the bridge lowers the volume enough that I don't wake the house up from my basement studio, and still retains the banjo tone, which I prefer to the mute.

However, if I was practicing upstairs and needed to really quiet down the banjo, I would use the mute.

All in all, a great product.   Excellent quality and workmanship.

I have recently purchased Mikes standard 5 string banjo mute.

I am highly impressed with the functionality, engineering, quality and sound of this devise. This mute is everything I was looking for in a banjo mute.

I can now play as hard as I like without imposing on others. The sound is also quite good when muted.

Mikes mute is simple to install and remove and it fits my RB250 and my Deering, but is difficult to fit to my Epiphone due to the bridge spacing.

I just love this thing.

My Aussie instructor (Heath Joyce - pickinlessons.com) demonstrated and strongly recommended Mikes Banjo Mute product as the best ever mute. The delivery to Melbourne Australia was prompt, the product was well packaged, and my queries were promptly answered in precise and clear detail even for a novice like me to understand. In the interest of opacity, I am a complete noob. I have my first banjo and very little clue about how to play the thing. I could have bought a case to protect it, that might have wise... or a banjo specific stand as my guitar stand seems ill suited to the task. As my banjo has a resonator (and I think a weight problem, but who am I to judge) a strap might have been a good purchase. In the interest in maintaining harmony (of the marital kind) I decided that, after the banjo itself, my next purchase should be a mute. Even my dog agrees. So unfamiliar with the banjo am I that I cannot speak to how much or how little the mute changes the overall tone but I can attest that it changes the volume significantly. In a good way. I am no expert but I think it actually sweetens the sound a bit. Snugging it down finger tight (not really tight, snug) allows for strings that ring.. but in a manner that has not yet wakened my wife. I notice the sustain of my instrument more with the mute in place. A good product, well made for a reasonable price. It shipped to Canada much quicker than I had expected.

Been using Mike's Mute for a couple weeks now and it works great. I'm on vacation right now and use it on my hotel balcony without disturbing the other guests or my wife and kids.

Easy to install and doesn't interfere with the right hand at all or cause any string buzz. It is super quiet and the banjo sounds different, but in a pleasant way; somewhat like a hammered dulcimer.

One side benefit for me as a new player is it allows me to hear how cleanly (or not!) I'm picking the strings. I now strive for cleaner picking and less clicking and scraping of my picks.

I have never used a different mute, but given the quality and effectiveness of Mike's Mute, I won't need to.

Bought a banjo, needed it as quiet as possible so that I could learn to play and not bother anyone. My living situation isn't as conducive to playing instruments as it used to be and I wasn't taking that into consideration when I decided to start over learning banjo...selfish me. So, I bought a Gold Tone mute, which is fine if I was alone outside and did not want to bother my deaf uncle that lives a couple of doors down from me, but it isn't good for my current needs.

So I wasn't playing at all. Then I found Mike's Banjo Mute. In videos, it seemed like it cut the sound down further than it does. What it DOES do is cut the sound of a resonator banjo by more than half and that is amazing. The tone is dampened but sounds good. Its about the volume of an un-amped archtop or hollowbody electric guitar. The mute installs easily, in seconds. Also, it has a low profile as well and isn't in the way when playing. I would recommend this mute over any other. The only reason that I gave it a 9 instead of a 10 is that I had a much higher expectation than is probably physically possible to achieve and hoped the volume would be reduced further.

Either way, I love it! Get one. Especially if you live in an apartment/condo or similar situation, you are a new picker and want to keep a happy marriage, you have young kids and can only practice when they are asleep, and/or you like your neighbors.

I'm a fingerstyle guitarist who became interested in playing the banjo recently. I never realized how naturally loud the banjo was until buying a new one and starting to practice with it. Even practicing lightly gave me a little bit of a headache as well as disturbing my family. Mike's Banjo Mute was an excellent solution. It gives the banjo a softer sweeter tone that I can practice with. I found the softer tone actually helps in my technique as well, since any lack of accuracy isn't masked by the loud resonance. Now I can practice in peace and save the full resonating sound of the banjo for when I use it in gigs. Very happy!

I am a raw beginner on the banjo and am enjoying the learning process. However, I have been very concerned about how the whole house rings with my attempts to learn the banjo, to the point where I am hesitant to practice. I recently purchased Mike's Banjo Mute to address this situation.  The process of buying was easy and personal. After completing the order, I received an email telling me that the item will be shipped the next day and when I should receive it. The shipping was prompt as expected. I found that it was very easy to "install." Loosen the screws, slip the mute over the bridge, lightly tighten the screws. done! The sound is dramatically subdued but it still sounds great. I am able to practice in the evening now knowing that I am not disturbing anyone else. A relief to me and my family.

I have not tried any other mute, but I am very satisfied with this one. Thank you Mike!

This mute has been a game changer for me. Because of the loudness of the banjo I've been limited to early morning or late at night for practice time. So when I went looking for a solution I was pleasantly suprised to find a video on youtube of a guy reviewing 2 mutes. From the video I thought Mikes was clearly more effective. I gladly spent the $30 hoping it would buy me some practice time...and boy did it! This mute takes so much sound out of the banjo, that honestly, I'll practice at the dinner table now. This mute has really opened up a lot of practice opportunities  for me. Being able to take advantage of a few minutes here or there has been extremely helpful to me and kept me making progress.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is serious about banjo that sound might restrict their practice time. Also, I see this being a handy tool when I go to jam in groups.

I have heard a lot of great things about this mute so I had to try it for myself.  I have a Deering Goodtime Special.  I want to use my picks but still keep the peace in the house.  To me, the difference in volume is significantly different.  It sounds like a soft guitar as opposed to the rich loud sound.

Installation involves loosening the screws and placing the mute along the bridge with the prongs towards the head of the banjo.  Once tightened, this is as stable as a factory part.

Shipping was fast, as mine came by USPS Priority Mail.  It had a nice drawstring bag to keep it from getting scratched.

It is a highly effective accessory to keep the volume down, but still allow you to practice with picks.

Highly recommend this.

I've been using two of Mike's Mutes since he introduced them a couple of years ago. I have the 5-string standard version and the 4-string version.

I've owned a lot of different banjo mutes in the past 35 yrs. Mike's are simply the best I've ever had. They are exceptionally easy to use, stay in place, don't damage the bridge and are on and off in a second or two.

Construction: Mike has done a great job of blunting all edges...no sharps anywhere. These are solid and well made, no cheap stamped parts here. I expect someone will be using these things on my banjos well into the next century.

Sound: These are extremely effective mutes. Ask my wife...no complaints! As with any mass-mute, the banjo sounds more guitar-like and notes sustain quite a bit longer.

In use: I really like the low profile of these mutes, they do stick up a bit (about 7/16") but that is quite a bit lower than the old violin-types (esp the old metal ones). There's nothing to drop down on the head, so they don't rattle. Also, they tend to lean back towards the tailpiece, so the brass bar doesn't buzz on the strings. They're low enough that even digging down in Scruggs mode near the bridge, my picking hand never touches the mute.

Overall: deep shot to center...outta the park! The best mute ever.

Received this as a gift on Father's Day - I think it was my families way of giving themselves a gift. LOL - a gift that keeps on giving. Well needless to say they will not have to endure the echoing sounds of FMB ever again. Very easy to use - pops right on and the difference in sound is night and day as seen on some other YouTube demos- it really is a great accessory - a must if you live with other people! It's only my 3 rd day with it and I will be using this item on a weekly basis. I give it very high ratings -At first glance I was going to knock it down a notch based on more of an  esthetic one  .. the threaded pins are a nylon vs. metal. But after checking the website I found the rational behind the use of nylon:Nylon screws are preferred over any other.  Its slight flexing allows the mute to rest to the backside of the bridge to prevent annoying string buzz.  Unlike plastic, it will last a lifetime. Unlike metal, it creates a more pleasing, softer sound and offers an enhanced sustain.
The rest of the mute is very nice Brass top - Aluminum hooks to catch the bridge.

I am very happy with this item - My Family Is happier!!

Brilliant product and very easy to use and arrived promptly from the USA and very reasonable postage cost.

Great sound and really mutes the banjo but still sounds terrific so that I can keep practicing with or without picks.  Now have a happy wife as I am only a beginner and she and the neighbourhood don't have to continue to listen to me practising! Would definitely recommend this mute and the great customer service from Mike.

Works really well just like the previous one and our two beagles now come into the music room whilst I am practising! These mutes are lot better than the Deering ones (sorry guys) and really work and the banjo's stay in tune :). Really fast postage from the states too. Thanks Mike :)

Researched before I bought this mute for my new Deering Goodtime Parlor banjo. There were some good youtube demos.  The mute is excellent both in terms of ease of use: it just slips on and off and tightens with a few turns of the screws.  And the mute is pretty incredible.  I was worried about the neighbors but no problem now.  I wouldn't even worry about someone sleeping in the other room. And the sound with the mute is quite nice.  I sent Mike an email just to double check that it would be ok for this particular Deering and he responded right away.  No regrets, best purchase ever and worth it!

Two thumbs up!

I have spent a good portion of my life, including the present, living in multi-family dwellings. I'm currently in a quadruplex townhouse. Because of this, I tend to only play my minstrel banjo at night, since it is much more quiet than my resonator banjo (an archtop Stew Mac). I like my neighbors, they like me, and I want them to continue to like me!

I've tried various makeshift banjo mutes, over the years. The one I've used the most was a piece of furniture foam stuffed below the bridge, between the strings and the head. While this does effectively lower the volume, it almost completely eliminates sustain. My normally bright sounding archtop produces a dull, but quiet, plunking sound.

Today, I received my Mike's Banjo Mute. The price is very reasonable...I paid $35.49 including shipping. And Mike Stidd shipped it immediately upon receiving my order. I was very pleased at how quickly it arrived, but the true pleasure was in using it for the first time. It is super easy to install and to adjust. I have a Grover Compensated Bridge, so I was a little concerned that it may not fit. There was no reason to be concerned. It fit just fine. Before putting it on, I played through Red Wing, unmuted. Then I put it on, plucked a little, heard some buzzing, adjusted the tension, plucked some more, then played Red Wing, muted. My right hand did not vary from my normal technique, and I immediately felt a huge grin spreading across my face as I played. Not only was the volume low enough to maintain the peace with my neighbors, the sustain was amazing! The overall tone does change, but it's a pleasant change that suits the lower volume well. I played for about an hour and loved every minute of it!

If you're considering a mute for your banjo (no, not that sledge hammer we've all seen), you can't go wrong with a Mike's Banjo Mute. It is money very well spent!

Update: It took me a while to realize it, but my Mike's Banjo Mute was lost in the cleanout of our house (we had moved from the multi-family dwelling to a single family home in June 2015) after the flood of August 2016. I really liked this mute, and I plan to contact Mike soon and purchase a replacement!

Being brand-new to banjo, I've learned a lot, quickly. Like... my wife gave me a not-so-pleasant look when I would pull the banjo out to practice. Sure, being new I'm not pleasant to listen to, yet. But it was the volume that really seemed to be the issue.

I took my banjo downstairs to practice where I can easily lose myself an hour at a time.

A few days of doing this, I noticed more high-pitch ringing in my ears when in silence. I value my hearing and protect it as much as possible. So I was curious why I had the ringing sensation (didn't put it together quite yet).

The next night, I was practicing and realized how incredibly loud the banjo really is and had a hunch. So I pulled out my trusty decimeter. I was shocked to see 80+ db --consistently.

For anyone unaware, 80 db of sound energy sustained over an hour will cause hearing damage. That's where the additional ringing in my ears was coming from.

Because of this revelation, I immediately fired up my favorite internet search engine and begin the research. I didn't even think there was something called a banjo mute. I was happy to see that a banjo mute isn't a far-fetched concept after all.

A personality trait I have is to research something until I feel I can make the absolute best decision possible. After several hours researching and reading about banjo mutes, my decision was made. The next morning, I ordered Mike's Banjo Mute. And later that morning I was notified that It had shipped that same day.

I eagerly awaiting it's arrival and was rewarded quickly. Putting the mute on the banjo was like nothing I could have anticipated. It is *SO* incredibly quiet, yet all the tones remain open and clean. It's just QUIET! Running over to my wife with banjo in hand, she prepared "the look". I strummed a few chords and ran a couple rolls. The look on her face was wonderful. Confusion and surprise. I proudly showed off Mike's Banjo Mute and she was appropriately impressed. Another marriage saved along with a little of my hearing.

There are few products which I purchase that exceed expectations. Mike's Banjo Mute is one of the few items which as done this.

On a side-note regarding build quality... my father was an industrial mold maker. I grew up around machine shops and high-precision machining (mostly aero-space). The quality of manufacture is great. There was some residual buffing compound in the engraving (yes, it's engraved and polished/buffed), but it's a piece of art. And if you're really worried about the buffing compound in the engraving, it could easily be removed. But I'm going to leave it in, because it's likely part of the tuning and contributes to the quietest mute possible.

If you've been on the fence regarding this mute, this quality item will last generations and will exceed expectations. Just buy one and know you made the best possible choice.

I'm new to learning the banjo and have been at it for several months.  I try to practice every evening and my wife (in another room) doesn't mind the noise.  She even encourages me to practice when I don't feel like it.  So my wanting to mute my banjo was more for my privacy when practicing than for my wife.  I searched on-line and found Mike's Banjo Mutes.  I'm glad that I ordered it.  The quality and workmanship is very good. Mike sent them out right away and I received them several days earlier than I was expecting.  I have them on an open back banjo and it sounds like an acoustic guitar but not as loud.  I have experienced some resonance when picking but I feel that is more my technique than the mute as I don't hear this all the time.  I know that they work because now my wife turns down the TV every now and than to hear me practice.  Good product.

After a long dry spell, I picked up my banjo again and started to practice using my collection of Murphy Henry's Tapes, but the banjo speaks right out and I tried many things to mute it including foam rubber under the strings near the bridge. Not too effective, but did cut it down a bit. I purchased the the Double Bullet head push onto the bridge mute, it kept falling off my bridge - also IMHO it made my banjo sound somewhat like a Dobro!. I saw Mike's mute and being an engineer, I appreciated the design as well as the quality of the implementation of the mute, especially the clever and secure mounting design. The mute performs as desired to really mute down the volume without affecting the pitch. I you live in close quarters or just want to watch TV while practicing, Mike's Mute is a must have.

For me its a 10! Thanks Mike....  Abe - Concord, NC   -- RB-250

I just received my new Mike's Banjo Mute. At first I had some difficulty figuring out how it attached to the bridge. I emailed Mike and he promptly gave me the link to his Website where there are clearly written installation instructions and a clear picture of what the mute looks like when attached. Then it was easy to attach. Lately I have been playing my banjo with tef files on my computer. When I attached the mute I had to turn my speakers way down so I could hear the banjo! This is a very well made and well designed mute and I recommend it.

My banjo mute (made by Mike Stidd) arrived today. This is the first banjo mute I own.

My first impressions was how well this thing was made. It will probably outlast me.

Once fitted, my banjo (and Ome Juniper) became slightly louder than my solid body electric guitars when unplugged! I did expect some muting but this is way more than I hoped for.

Then the surprise! Probably because of the muting, a lot of the flaws in my picking became apparent. I find this to be an even better use of this mute (than the muting itself) because it will help me clean up my picking.

I am very impressed with this little piece of brass. And because it is little, it is totally unobtrusive and my picking hand does come into contact with it at all. I'm a happy customer. Thanks Mike!

I never have used a mute before, but recently my wife and kids have taken over my practice area (also known as the living room) just as I am getting ready to practice.  I didn't want to carry my banjo upstairs to the bedroom, so I decided to buy a mute and practice in the living room after they decide to go upstairs and go to bed.

I bought Mike's mute and it does a fantastic job!  It quiets my banjo to just slightly louder than an unplugged electric guitar.  Now I can practice without having to worry about keeping them awake.

I find other times to practice as well, when I don't need the mute, but when I need to practice after they have gone to bed, this one works great!

I spent many months stuffing t-shirts in my resonator to muffle the sound when practicing but would have to remove the resonator at least once a week when I played out. The time spent muting this way was getting pretty annoying and the screws were starting to thread.

I ordered Mike's Mute, got immediate email confirmation from him and he shipped it out very quickly. I had the mute in my hand in a couple days and it works great! Some may be nervous about the plastic screws BUT you should know that Mike went through several versions with metal screws that had less than pleasing sonic results. He very convincingly defends the plastic screws and I believe him when he says breakage is a non-issue.

It makes the banjo quiet without altering tuning and keeps a pleasant tone.

Thanks Mike!

Without a doubt the best mute I've ever used. Pretty quick and simple to install. My wife loves it!

Only complaint.. can't be left on while case is closed.

I got the radiused version and had to flatten it out a tad in a vice to fit my 14" radius better... No biggie though.

Very nicely made. Mutes very well but tone still sounds good. Doesn't interfere with my picking hand.

When I lose this one I'll buy another right away!

Received my new mute quickly from Mike. I found it to be easy to install and brought the volume down significantly so I am able to practice while my family is sleeping, reading, etc. I also discovered an unexpected benefit--with the reduced resonance/overtones, I was able to hear irregularities in my timing much clearer. It was rather humbling, but allowed me to work on improving. Once I get a lick down, I can remove the mute to check my tone. I highly recommend this product.

I had Mike make a mute for me for my 6-string banjo.  I just sent him some pictures of the bridge and he made it--all in less than a day and it was shipped!  I just got it yesterday--it works great.  All other muting methods I have tried made the banjo quieter, but none of the sound I like to hear when I play was preserved--meaning that it wasn't any fun to play that way (muted).  With this Mike's mute, the volume is reduced, but the sound is still good and it's just as fun to play muted or not.  I think I'll even be using this mute to do some back-up on my recordings--it actually sounds that good.  Great product and great service from Mike!!

Bought this mute off www.mikesbanjomute.com last week and arrived extremely quick to where I live in Australia in ordinary post( considering I bought a guitar stand the same day from Sydney in my own country and it still hasn't arrived).

It came in a red pouch and was very quick to manouvre underneath the strings behind the bridge, screwed the thumb nuts down on the brass piece that mutes the strings and after a quick tuning adjustment it was ready to play.

Immediately I heard my wife say that's better!! Yeah right! I would compare the muted volume to my Ibanez hollow body guitar. You would be hard pressed to hear the muted banjo through a closed door so as I work on a ship my fellow shipmates shouldn't be bothered with my incessant practicing.

When my wife is out I have just been unscrewing the nuts off and take off the brass plate and play the banjo with base still in place.

So in conclusion I would be happy to recommend Mike's Banjo Mute as it does exactly what the website says it does.

Happy wife, happy life!!!

I really like this mute.    The volume  of the banjo  is drastically reduced, the  resulting tone  is still  quite  that of a banjo  with noticeably more sustain.  This increased  sustain  does not interfere with  rapid picking.    The sound  produced by the  muted banjo is quite  pleasing  in itself - in a way it expands the tonal possibilities of the instrument.  It is good-looking, solid  and well-designed, and will probably last forever.  You feel like you are getting something for your money  here.  It sure enables  you to play  whenever  you want to.

I've been using Mike's Banjo Mute for about 5 months now on my Deering Goodtime open back, and am now using it on my Ome prototype Oro resonator banjo.
It's been fantastic. The mute works quite well.
It's a very quick and easy install.  I slip it on, turn the screws a few times to make it snug, and I'm ready to go in mere seconds.  It sits there out of of the way on the bridge, and doesn't interfere with my anchor.
It's quite effective as a mute.  It quiets both my banjos down to where I can play in an office next to coworkers who used to comment on my skill ("I'm very glad you're practicing!"), and they no longer notice my endless roll repetitions.
This is a great improvement over my previous towel-stuffing and weighted clothespin use. The clothespin didn't quiet the banjo as much, or as solidly, and I had to work around it for picking. As well, even on the open back, the towel stuffing took minutes to get right.
Also, the extra mass on the bridge not only quiets the banjo, but increases sustain. For me, this has two benefits. First, it's a cool tone change that makes for some interesting resonator-guitar-style experimentation, which can translate to unmuted playing. And second, it's a precision aid for note collisions, making me more aware of deliberate string reuse vs ringing as I'm working out a Scruggs style break or clawhammer version of a fiddle tune.
Finally, and even better, I've found Mikes Banjo Mute is a great technique cleanup aid. With it on, I can hear when my pick noise is becoming excessive. I can also hear when my head taps are becoming too frequent and loud. It thereby provides a well appreciated reminder to fix my posture; so much so that I find myself using it even when I don't need to quiet the notes.
Bottom line:  I may buy a second Mike's Banjo Mute, just so I don't have to keep transferring my current one between my cases.

PS - If you have a bridge with rounded arches, consider a dab of Sugru or another pad on the side of the mute's clamp legs to match the curvature, and thereby increase the bearing surface, rather than screwing the clamp down more tightly.

I'm partial to precise machined metal parts and the mute was impressive even at first sight. The dampening affect on the volume was greater than I expected. I can play in the den with the door closed and the wife can sleep undisturbed in a nearby room.

The good:

  • Well made
  • Clamps onto the bridge very securely (it won't accidently pop off)
  • Works great! Volume reduction impressed me.

The bad:

  • Well, this isn't actually bad per se, but the mute sticks up above the bridge by a little bit and if I moved my hand very close the bridge it might brush against the mute. So far, not an issue at all for me.

Then someone complained about me being in the laundry room, so options were slim. BUT, now I'm using the mute, and my roommates say it's super quiet. I purchased this mute about 3 months ago and I am quite impressed. Mike has done an excellent job of creating and building a mute that does a great job and looks great as well. When in place, my banjo's volume is dramatically reduced making it suitable to be played late into the night or early morning. This mute also increases the sustain of the banjo and gives it an almost dobro-like sound. I've also found that when I use this mute, I am more aware of what my right hand is doing. I didn't think a mute would help with right hand technique, but it really has. Overall, this is a great product and I would suggest anyone who has considered buying a mute to get one from Mike.

I am just starting out on the banjo.

When I picked up my Hatfield banjo, I stayed with family friends and starting picking that night and the next morning.  Unfortunately I didn't realize much of the house could hear my "work". As I told my dad I was going to go pick he said I might want to use my Mike's Banjo Mute.

I live in an apartment with relatively thin walls.  Out of consideration for my neighbors, I purchased my Mike's Banjo Mute well before my banjo was ready.

Working with Mike to ensure I ordered the right mute was a joy.  Mike is responsive and gives great advice.

His mutes are well constructed, feel great, are easy to attach in no time, and are really just great products.

When I returned home the following week, I started to pick, but it was a little late in the night.  I attached the mute, and WOW, it really cute down the noise.  I mean, this thing is easy to use and REALLY works. It was worth the money and I know my neighbors will appreciate it (for awhile).  But the nice thing is, the mute doesn't really kill the sound of the banjo, just the noise level.

I highly recommend Mike's Banjo Mute to anyone.  It was money well spent and I know it will continue to give me options when playing in close quarters..

I ordered this banjo mute directly from the website. I was slightly put off by the very basic website. However, I trust the reviews on this site and I have to say that they did not let me down. I ordered the mute and everything went smooth. I received the mute in just a couple days time. I was truly shocked to see it that quick. I even received a tracking number with lightening speed. Now on to the mute itself. I currently live in an apartment and I was getting very tired of having to play without my picks due to it being so loud. I stumbled across this mute and I can certainly say that it is worth it. The mute itself is made very well. It is a simple design and it is very effective. The mute nearly cuts the sound in half. I don't think I will be getting anymore complaints from the neighbors when I am practicing my rolls. I find that when the mute is on, it doesn't mess with the tone. It actually seems to give my banjo a nice mellow and warm sound that is quite nice. The best part about it is I can now sit on the couch and watch tv while I am practicing!

As a beginning player in a household that doesn't love the banjo (I know, right?) I needed a mute to enable practice and interpersonal harmony. I looked at a few reviews and settled on Mike's. Great choice! It dampens the volume dramatically. On my banjo it changes the tone modestly (makes it a little tinny but does not reduce sustain), but after using it for a 15 minutes I no longer noticed. Simple to install and remove (hint, don't overtighten the screws).   If I were choosing again I wouldn't change anything.

Perhaps the best part was the purchase process. Easy online ordering direct from Mike, and the bridge mailed out the same day with an accompanying email to let me know. Paypal made the financials smooth.   3-4 days later the bridge arrived in the mail.

UPDATE: I've been using the mute for a couple of weeks and need to amend my review. After some experimenting, I found that tightening the mute further eliminated any tinny sound and also increased my sustain while muting the volume. Great assessory; I just needed a little time to adapt to it.
