Heads  Hide Heads by John Balch Banjo Part/Accessory Reviews

John has provided hide heads for about five of my banjos over the last few years. His work is absolutely top-notch and he has also provided great guidance and suggestions concerning the best head for each banjo. The banjos have gained new and varied voices and I have gained a deeper understanding of what these instruments can sound like.

John makes pre-mounted heads in several standard sizes, which makes installation a breeze. If you have an odd-sized rim, you can send it to him and he will fit a custom head and return the rim to you with the head installed.

If you are interested in learning about and/or obtaining a top quality hide head for your banjo, get in touch with John. You won't be sorry.

I installed a Balch Special Select Goat Skin head on my 12" Rickard Maple Ridge. The pre mounted head was very easy to install and requires no long term maintenance. It installed as easily as any plastic head I have ever used. It replaced a Remo Renaissance head. WOW! What a difference. The Balch head helped me to achieve the tone that I had always envisioned this (or any other) banjo to be capable of. It gives the banjo a very smooth voice. Very present in the low end. Plenty of volume and presence to cut through the mix. Just the right amount of sustain. Most noticeably is the banjo no longer has that annoying synthetic "ping" accenting the notes that is so apparent with a mylar head. Aesthetically the head is simply beautiful. This is the way a banjo is supposed to look. I doubt I will ever have the desire or need to return to s synthetic plastic banjo head. Highly recomend!

Fantastic product.....John's goat skin 12" head was the frosting on the cake for my new Bart Reiter Round Peak....There is no reason to shop for any other head, he makes the best.

Strongest hide heads I've ever gotten. very well mounted and balanced, professionally packed and shipped. John is a pleasure to work with , knows banjos inside and out, and what makes them tic the best. Both my banjos ,(Bart Reiter Regent, Recording King RK-R25),now have these heads and the tone is much improved, and they look cool as can be! Highly recommended!!

John's heads are top quality, rest assurred. John provides mounted heads or unmounted, and, John will stain them upon request. My personal favorite is his coffee stained heads.
