Ramsey  Chanterelle Special Banjo Reviews

Submitted by spencesrye (see all reviews from this person) on 3/30/2013

Where Purchased: Zepp

Year Purchased: 2011
Price Paid: Don't Remember historic exchange rates / currency converter

Sound

Suits my style great! Great voice. Projects well, but not too loud. Sounds absolutely gorgeous when playing over the scoop.

Sound Rating: 9

Setup

Setup was great, action was set well. Only changes made were to add a modded bridge gradually shaved from lower in the bass register to higher in the upper register. The bridge replacement was easy.

Setup Rating: 9

Appearance

Great looking banjo. Beatiful flame on the maple neck, griffin on headstock, and fairly standard inlays on the fretboard.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

Absolutely, a workhorse. Primary instrument.

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

Never dealt with Chanterelle, but the staff at Zepp were a pleasure to deal with.

Customer Service: 9

Components

The whole thing is a standout, in my opinion.

Sound

After listening to many other banjos, I chose the Mike Ramsey Special primarily for the sound (the less ornate "Student" is pretty much the same instrument). It has a definite old-time plunky sound.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

I'm new to clawhammer so I'm assuming the somewhat high action is standard. After a week or so I'm already used to it.

Setup Rating: 9

Appearance

Beautiful inlays, curly maple neck and pot with ebony fingerboard, heel cap and walnut cap at the bottom of the pot. Perfect workmanship all around.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

This one was built to be here well into the next century.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

90 days warranty from Elderly, 5 years warranty from Mike Ramsey, regardless of owner.

Customer Service: 10

Components

12" maple rim, rolled brass tone ring, Renaissance head, adjustable truss rod, bone nut, no-knot tailpiece, geared planetary tuners.

Components Rating: 10

Overall Comments

This is my first really nice banjo. A keeper.
