Recording King  Recording King RK-75 Elite Banjo Reviews

Where Purchased: Banjoteacher.com

Year Purchased: 2014
Price Paid: 1499 ($US)

Sound

The sound is all I could ever ask for and more. It has a great 4th string, plenty of low end and sweet up the neck.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Mike Munford did the setup. His quality service is second to none. He took the time to call me and go over some details which I very much appreciated. I highly recommend Mike for any setup work. The banjo is a pleasure to play.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

The banjo is pretty much flawless, beautiful inlays. High quality parts and the nitro finish is great. There is just one rough spot in the neck beside the 5th string tuning peg, but it should be fine and it doesn't interfere with anything. Other than that, the quality is outstanding. I'm gonna give it a 9 for the rough spot by the peg.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

The hardware is top notch. The finish is beautiful. I just got the banjo, but I can't imagine ever needing another, this thing is built to last and will be my go to banjo for many years.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Limited lifetime warranty. I contacted the company a few times with some questions before purchasing and they answered them all.

Components

After Mike and I discussed the setup, I decided to have the rim shaved down to a slip fit. The tone ring fit wasn't too tight, but I wanted it to have a slip fit. The only other things I had changed were to install a medium crown head instead of the factory high crown and also had Mike install a Snuffy bridge.

Overall Comments

Overall, I can see myself owning and enjoying this banjo for many years to come. I highly recommend if you are in the market for an RK75, go ahead and buy one. It is one killer banjo for the money. I also recommend going with Ross Nickerson at Banjoteacher.com, he has some great freebies that come with the purchase and the setup offered by Mike Munford is second to none.

Overall Comments

We returned the rk-75 I initially purchased through musiciansfriend.com and ended-up finding one $200 cheaper at instrumentalley.com with a better set-up/strings.This particular banjo has a sweet/smooth tone with high volume with the resonator on. My son plays a clawhammer and finger-picking without finger picks and this banjo really delivers!

Sound

Banjo comes with a brass tone ring and sounds good as is, when set up is right.

Sound Rating: 7

Setup

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

The fit and Finish were Triple A. Couldn't find a flaw any where. Inlays were Beautiful

Reliability

Tailpiece was to Flimsy, Changed it to a heavier Presto! Changed Tone Ring To Bronze Kulesh Vintage 20

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

Has Life time Warrenty I Have Dealt with Zepps Country Music, I have not Contacted Recording KIng,

Components

Tailpiece could be a lot better and a bronze tone ring at that price would improve the banjo.

A decent banjo as sold, but a great banjo with the Kulesh Vintage 20 tone ring
