Bridges  Steve Davis compensated bridge Banjo Part/Accessory Reviews

I contacted Steve, told him about my banjo and he suggested a roasted maple base with an ebony top weighing around 2.25 grams. I ordered a 5/8" bridge with Crowe spacing and received it without incident a few weeks later.

This Steve Davis Bridge is the best bridge I have ever had. The craftsmanship is superb. It has the most interesting shape I have seen in a bridge. The compensation is amazing. Every note is perfect up and down the neck checked by ear or by electronic tuner. Every G note on every string and every fret rings true as well as all the other notes. When I put on the capo, it doesn't go out of tune. The Tone has improved greatly. I used to have a great bridge, but this one blows it out of the water. And there is no comparison to any straight bridge. The tone, volume, clarity, response and tuning are better than I have ever hoped for in a bridge.  The best $35 I ever spent on my banjo.

Steve is a pleasure to work with. I will definitely buy more of these when needed. I should probably get a backup or two just in case.

I just received a sycamore/rosewood bridge from Steve for a recently acquired Noel Booth open back banjo. Very nice! Intonation is spot on now and very pleasant tone.  Thanks Steve.

Excellent bridges. I had Steve make two compensated bridges and installed them on a Gibson Granada, and a Gibson R.B.-250.Both banjo's sounded fine before with the S.S. bridges that were on them, but it seems that the two banjo's came into their full potential after installing the Davis compensated bridges.More volume and truer intonation all the way up the neck.Well made by a true Down East craftsman. Great product.

Excellent bridge.  Put a Davis compensated bridge on a Deering Golden Wreath, it made it much more full with a solid bottom end.  Up & down the neck it sounded better than any bridge I've tried prior.

Just bought a Huber banjo, & just for kicks I put the Davis bridge on it & it accomplished the same thing.  Just when I thought the Huber couldn't be improved, the Davis bridge gave it just a slight increase of volume & an ever so slight longer sustain.

I gave it a 9 only due to the finish.  I'm a wood worker, so I'm probably a bit more critical than the normal person.  While it was good, I would have preferred a bit more finish sanding & a light coat of tongue oil to bring out the cherrywood top.

Overall an excellent bridge.

I just want to add my $.02 to praise Steve's bridges, and then a whole lot more to praise Steve himself as a craftsman and a banjo guy (whatever that may be, I mean it in the best possible way.)

I'm fortunate to live in Maine, so it was a pleasant trip up to Port Clyde with my recently purchased Vega ST-5. The instrument is still new to me, and I'm really liking it as I get used to it, but there were some minor intonation quirks up the neck that seemed to indicate a compensated bridge. Because we had the instrument at hand; and I wanted to add a little height over the existing bridge (which was, I think, OEM,) Steve ended up making a custom bridge from an existing blank which he had prepared previously, essentially on the spot.

Works just fine. Intonation up the neck is just right, and the tone has more clarity and sparkle; which is what I love in a banjo.

And the bonus at the end of the process was that Steve pulled out his Gibson-based 5 string, which Jim Cox had modified some years ago, and played some great tunes... Altogether a great banjo day in Maine for Bob...

But back to the bridge. Steve's bridge solved my tuning problem and it made my banjo sound better, so what better outcome could I have had?

Talk or write to Steve, and he can probably do the same for your instrument, too.

I was having problems with the tuning of my fourth string. I contacted Steve and he sent one of his compensated bridges out for me to try. After getting the intonation setup correct, I checked the fourth string with my auto tuner. To my great surprise, it was now right on the spot. It was not sharp on the third thru fifth fretted notes anymore. I listened closely to the tone my banjo now has and this too was a pleasant Surprise! Better tone and less harmonics AND in tune. You can't ask for more than that. Thanks Steve!
