Mutes  Mike's Banjo Mute Banjo Part/Accessory Reviews

I just started learning to play the banjo. It became obvious that I would need a mute to keep my wife happy. After researching banjo mute reviews online I decided to purchase Mike's Banjo Mute. Wow! The mute is awesome and the prompt and personal service I received was excellent. I found the mute to be very easy to install.  Changing the mute out has not disturbed the bridge at all. The quality of Mike's banjo mute is top-notch. It clearly was designed to last a lifetime & I think the banjo sounds great with the mute on. I would recommend Mike's Banjo Mute without reservation.

Mike asks you to review his mute after you try it out so here it is: I think this is a great product, just what I was looking for. It really does a good job of reducing the volume of the banjo. I have a new baby in the house and my practice had taken a dive before I got this thing, big game changer. Think of like an acoustic guitar compared to a stratocaster not plugged in, that is about the difference in volume it delivers. The only thing that takes some getting used to is the bulkiness on the bridge. If you are like me and you play with part of your hand resting behind the bridge than it does feel a little restrictive at first. Not a deal breaker though, I think the trade off is worth it. Also Mike had solid communication and shipped out my mute the same day I ordered it. I would recommend this product.

The Mike's Banjo Mute has a very good design and works well.  Very nice balance - not so muted that you can't hear your playing, but definitely cuts down the volume.  I am fairly new to banjo playing and don't have a lot of experience, but a couple of others that I have heard were either too muted or still too loud.  Highly recommend this one.

Wow, we love the mute. We tried a Recording King and well - not even close  to the quality or sound of Mike's Banjo Mute. On the Recording King the little furry stuff shredded off on the banjo. I brushed it off with a soft lens brush. Anyway we love it and think it's the very best!!!We like the full tone yet quieter sound. Actually just a new sound that could be it's own instrument you might say. It's much quieter than the Recording King and I am sure much quieter than the Jim Dunlop cloth capo that Pete Seeger said would work as a mute if need be! ( In his banjo instruction book found in a dark corner of our library). Anyway we think it's just wonderful and our cat even stayed in the same room while we each took a turn playing as we currently own one banjo- a used Deering Goodtime  in excellent condition which is a logical for us as beginner's choice . So kudos and I would recommend to every beginner and anyone else who wants or needs a mute. I work in the travel industry and it's a must have for anyone who travels with a banjo or is considering traveling with a banjo.  With some banjos and maybe all as we have only tried it on ours- you should  be able to play in a motel or hotel room without distrubing other guests!

I live in a nyc apartment with paper walls, not what one thinks of for a clawhammer banjo setting. Nevertheless, an essential piece of kit is a mute, and I have a couple.  A goldtone mute I could have made myself and works okay, and a Mike's Mute. The Mike's Mute is a wise investment and cuts down the volume considerably more than the other one.  Very well made mute, and I love it. A machinist's work of art with a purpose.

Thanks Mike!

I practice nightly in a sound sensitive environment and I need to stuff my pot and mute the strings as best I can. I've used the Gold Tone Lucci Banjo Mute for the past year and Mike's Banjo Mute just blows it out of the water in terms of volume reduction and tone retention. It's slightly fiddlier to fasten to the bridge but it's 100% worth the extra few seconds.

If not driving your family and neighbors crazy is your goal, then you can't do better than with Mike's Mute.

Very few products can be considered perfect. Duct tape and Bic lighters come to mind. Now there is Mike's Mute. This little gem does not do what a mute should not do. It does not fall off or buzz your strings or move your bridge or throw your banjo out of tune. All it does is stay where you put it and mute your banjo. Simple. Perfect. Thanks, Mike.

Mike's banjo mute works exactly as advertised.  It makes my resonated tenor banjo sound like a quiet guitar.  It's easy to put on and easy to take off, and according to Mike you can leave it on for extended periods of time and it won't hurt a thing.  Mike does recommend taking it off before you put the banjo in any kind of case (even a soft case) in order to assure no damage occurs to the head.  My only gripe is that for some reason the post office decided that the fastest way to Arkansas from Utah was through New Jersey so it took longer than it should have to get to me.

I have tried several mutes over the years with varying success.  Mike's mute is exactly what I needed and wanted.  Easy to install, made of durable components, and it does exactly what you want it to do.  It takes the volume away and leaves the musical sounds at volume that works for inside the house!

Recommend it highly.

Thanks for developing it Mike!

Just got this mute and I've been very pleased. I use a compensated bridge on both my banjos, and this mute easily attaches to the bridges I use (a Sampson compensated bridge and a Grover).  I believe this would also work well with a Moon bridge (which I also own, but do not currently have installed on a banjo, though it seems to fit and tighten to the bridge, itself). I think, as a rule, this mute should fit any bridge with open areas under the portion where the strings rest. The open areas just need to be large enough to allow the small arms to pass beneath. I don't believe it would work with bridges with small open areas or too much wood between the string rest and the openings (for example, I don't see much chance of the mute working with the Sampson violin-style banjo bridge). That being said, however, i think there are many more bridges that will accommodate Mike's mute than will not.

The tone quality with the mute attached is very good with no buzz. Volume is about the same as an acoustic guitar, and a decent amount of sustain remains. This mute makes for much less objectionable practice, especially when the wife is trying to read! This was definitely a great purchase--effective, well-made, and easy to use.  Very satisfied with this wonderful product.

When my upstairs neighbor saw me carrying my banjo I explained that I had just started taking lessons. He gave me a look that made me offer up the fact that I was looking for a banjo mute. He conjectured that a 4 pound hammer might do the trick but I assured him that I had received some more helpful suggestions from my friends at Banjo Hangout.

After reading the reviews and watching a couple of YouTube videos I settle on "Mike's Banjo Mute". What a nice piece of hardware! It looks great and works wonderfully. I was a little concerned about the price but I have to say that in this case you really get what you pay for. I couldn't be more satisfied!

I can't believe how much better it looks and performs than the two clothespins I had been clipping to my bridge.

I've tried different banjo mutes over the last 55 years, and I've found Mike's to be the best.  You don't have to take it apart to mount it; you can put it on and take it off with one hand.  It fits every bridge I own, including the Moon Bridge, except the 5-footed minstrel style.  The muted sound is clear to the player but nearly inaudible ten feet away.  At $36 it isn't cheap, but it is fair, and if you want cheap, you can always use a clothespin.  Mike fulfilled my order promptly.  What more could you ask?

AMAZING!  I have no doubt that I will become a better banjo player because of this small $35 item.  This mute now allows me to practice at night after my kids are asleep.  This was not an option before, so I would have to squeeze 15 or 20 minutes of practice in before the kids went to sleep.  Not any more!  In fact, when the mute arrived in the mail, my toddler was taking a nap, so I tried it out.  I put the mute on (super easy to do) and played for a solid 45 minutes while she slept.  I can't explain how excited I am to be able to play more banjo now!

I am very new to the banjo, so most things are very new to me.  I want to try to learn clawhammer, but I live in an apartment.  I've got a sweet deal, so I don't want to bother my neighbors.  After looking at a lot of posts here on Banjo Hangout ( what a great site!) I ordered a mute from Mike.  It arrived very quickly, and looks like a very well-constructed piece of equipment.  Easy to put on and take off the instrument, and it does the job nicely.  It cuts the volume for those times when I need to be quieter.  If I lost this one I'd not hesitate to get another.

Very impressed with this product and the service. I live in Turkey and the mute arrived in less than 10 working days.

The mute was simple to install and very effective. While I was playing, my wife was in another room. I asked if she could hear the banjo.

She said all that she could hear was the metronome. So very muted indeed.

I received my new mute quickly and am quite pleased indeed!  having used the fielding-cutler for years, I find Mike's Mute superior, no offense to the fine folks who make fielding-cutler as their mute served me well.  Perhaps its the use of brass (which is certainly more attractive) but the tone and muting ability is amazing.  I also appreciate the use of nylon bolts, which do not mar the back of my bridges!  Couldn't be more pleased!

I'm a beginner player only a few months in and still make lots of mistakes.  Those mistakes don't sound very good so I need lots of practice.    With kids in the house and busy schedules, most of my practice has to come at night and I can't be too loud.  I've tried bare finger picking, towel in the back, clothes pins, various things shoved under the strings, and never felt I was still having the same practice experience that I needed because the sound, tone, or feel just wasn't the same as it should be.

Now with Mike's Mute, all I can say is WOW!  Using Mike's Mute, I can use my picks, hit the strings with force, and still not be heard in the next room over but the banjo sound is still there.  It is a different sound... more similar to an acoustic guitar in loudness but still unmistakeable as a banjo.  I even used my tuner to test the strings after I put the mute on and they were slightly off, but heck, they might have been off before I put it on; they were very very close.  The 5th string seems a bit twangier than normal, but I can get used to it. Over all, the sound is great and I can really practice the way I need to practice.  Wish I had found it sooner!

Thanks Mike!

Received the product yesterday afternoon.

Great product, does exactly what it is supposed to do and more. I am actually impressed by how much it cuts volume without sacrificing too much tone. It will save you marriage, improve your relationship with neighbors and your kids will thank you, etc. Yesterday I was able to practice for a few hours with my wife watching tv  8 ft away from me and my sleeping son in the next room. To give you a ballpark idea, with the mute on, my banjo sounds just a touch louder than an unplugged electric guitar.

Why would anyone want to mute a banjo? Don't answer this question until you have tried Mike's Banjo Mute! This mute is an essential accessory for every banjo player. Why? Because it works! This mute can deliver an almost silent tone when played finger style. When using picks it give a new soft and sustaining tone that still has the banjo "ring" to it. It fits securely. Most importantly, it fits my Shubb compensated banjo bridge. The mute delivers as promised. Mike Stidd provided very prompt service in filling my order. This mute is inspiring me to greater achievement as a banjo player. Thank you Mike Stidd for this excellent banjo mute. This is the first mute I've used. I just started playing a little bit ago, and I am a little worried about the banjo affecting my marriage. I am impressed with this mute - it reduces the sound level dramatically and makes the banjo have a "sweet" sound. For me, it's worth the money.

One thing I found on my Deering Goodtime Special: let the mute angle toward the tailpiece (not perpendicular to the bridge / main strings). I had some buzzing at first, but I was trying to force the mute to lay flat across the top of the bridge. This isn't necessary. Once I realized this, I was very happy with the mute.

I think this is a truly excellent device. Like many others I was convinced by the comments on Banjo Hangout and the YouTube clips. Even so, the noise reduction was still a BIG surprise! I had been using a beer towel folded tightly under the bridge which I always thought was undesirable as it was probably exerting pressure on the head. Now I still have the towel folded loosely behind the head for a subtler sound when not using the mute and I don't bother removing it when I add the mute.

I live in a typical English 1990s home with plasterboard internal walls and virtually no soundproofing so this is absolutely essential as I only get to practice late at night. Having the mute means that I can practise properly without having to worry about my family and neighbours being disturbed.

The service from Mike was excellent. He shipped the item the day after I paid and his communication was excellent. The device itself is discreet and easy to fit on and it doesn't go anywhere once attached.

First of all, all of the other comments about fast shipping, more sustain and how well the mute is made all apply here. I'll try to add something that may benefit others that are in my situation. My wife will put in earplugs everytime I pick up the Banjo. So.. for me, most important was to find a mute that would quiet the banjo.. to an almost non-existent level. So I did a totally "unscientific" test of Mike's Mute for this review. Using a Radio Shack sound level meter, my Deering Goodtime 2 is 91db at 1ft distance. With the mute on it is 69db at 1ft. That is a 22db reduction in loudness. As it happens, the Fender earplugs my wife uses when I "play" have a noise reduction of -22db... Needless to say, she is a happy camper. Her days of plugging her ears are gone! The mute does make the banjo ring more, and the sustain is longer...now if it could only make me play better! Best $35 bucks I ever spent. Thanks Mike.

I am a novice player, so nothing sounds good to anyone, and I live in a row house with strict rules about quiet time. But I want to be able to pick up the banjo without having to check the clock. At first I took off my resonator and stuffed in a skein of yarn but I didn't like the sound and there was no easy way to undo this adjustment without ditching the resonator, which I didn't want to do.
I checked the comments and recommendations about mutes at Banjo Hangout and I listened to Bob Evans' video (and others) about Mike's banjo mute on YouTube and decided it would be a good investment.
Mike's web site is easy to navigate and provided a good picture and description of the mute. Once I had purchased it, my mute arrived in a very short time. I found it easy to install (and later remove.)
I agree completely with earlier reviews that describe the degree to which the banjo is quieted, along with the added bonus of a new sweetness to the muted sound of my banjo. It is not only possible now to play my banjo (using appropriate strength) during the middle of the night without violating the noise rules, but it's pleasant to listen to in a whole new gentle way!
I recommend this as a high quality, well-made, cleverly designed product which performs as promised with a flat bridged banjo like mine.

I needed a mute that would allow me to practice my banjo in my office over lunch without disturbing anyone. I have an office with a door but the soundproofing is minimal at best. This mute is wonderful and does exactly what I was hoping for. it quiets the instrument down significantly but still produces a musical tone that is great for practicing. It almost has a dulcimer kind of tone. Very pleasing and workable. The mute is very well machined and comes in a velvet pouch.

Much, much quieter? Absolutely! But more than that. Other commercial and home-made mutes I've tried either don't mute nearly as much or do so by muffling the sound. What makes Mike's mute different are two other things that happen. You get a huge sustain: would-be loud short sounds turn into quiet sustained sounds. And much of the high frequency component of the un-muted tone gets shifted toward lower frequencies. Both render the banjo much more socially acceptable to the anti-banjo crowd. Everyone's happier, but you also get a delightful, new tone to your instrument --- and you might even appreciate its un-muted sound all the more.

I'm a novice on the banjo, which means me playing with finger-picks assaults one's ears. Nevertheless, practicing with picks is a necessity, so I bought Mike's Banjo Mute to make things easier on everybody. Mike's customer service is exemplary: he emailed me immediately after I placed my order to let me know when and how he'd be shipping it, and this was during Memorial Day weekend!

I received the mute in a timely fashion, and it came in a nice little red carrying pouch. I threw it on my banjo and played Cripple Creek. I was immediately astounded how quiet my banjo had become, yet it still sounded the same tone-wise. It's now about as loud as playing an acoustic guitar with bare fingers. I don't have anything negative to say about this product at this time. The only thing I can see being a potential problem is the nylon screws, which may need replacing over time. I highly recommend this mute to any and all banjo players who want to play without being too loud.

This mute lowers the sound level a great deal without changing the tonal qualities, it may even lengthen the sustain. It is very well made with top quality materials.

I use a 1/2" bridge and the heads of the screws interfered with the feet of the bridge. I milled off about half the height of the heads and all was well. You can use a file or sand paper to do the same but since my mill was handy, I used it.

Works great! It really quiets my powerful banjo down to where it sounds like an acoustic guitar and I can hear how well I'm playing.

It didn't fit my Big Foot bridge well at all since the area between the bridge feet is cut in arches, but a file taken to the outer edges of the aluminum mute feet to bevel the edges to 45º makes it fit just fine.

Gave it a 9 because there ain't no 10.

Mike's banjo mute is a great mute and works perfectly. It is easily clipped on the bridge and does not damage it thanks to its plastic srcews. Shipping arrived to my home in Paris about 20 days after I ordered it on Mike's website. So why only 8/10? During a training session in my bathroom it just slept from my hand, felt on the flooring...and one of the plastic screws broke in two parts. I tried to fix it with some glue but didn't get good result. I guess I should ask Mike for advice. My conclusion : This mute is a really great product but need to be manipulated carefuly.
Update : I fixed it and definitely love it. To keep friendly neighbors, I used it for my first BHO music recording.

Mike's Banjo Mute is a marriage saver! I have a loud Dean BW-5 banjo with a resonator and a clear Remo head. It's loud. It was soon after I purchased the banjo from the screaming coming from the other parts of the house that a mute was necessary in order to allow me to practice riffs and rolls ad nauseum. I bought Mike's Mute and it works! Now, I can practice at a very low level without upsetting the Dept of Corrections Chief in the household. The mute is well constructed and stays in place once attached. I do have one comment though, the mute tends to tilt back toward the tailpiece on my bridge. It doesn't fall off, it just tends to tilt a bit. The mute seems to just, well, MUTE and to my ears it maintains the tone pretty well. It is the only mute I have so I have no other point of comparison. I'd give it a full 10 except for that tilt on the bridge, so a 9.

Well, I must be missing something here, because after reading a lot of the reviews about this mute, I seem to be the only one who isn't happy with it. Firstly, it doesn't stay on.Tighten it up lightly and it will vibrate loose, tighten hard and the nylon screws bend and it still loosens. While it does stay on, I'm disappointed with the amount of muting(still quite loud), and there are all sorts of issues with the tone and tuning. Without it everything's ok(well almost).I am sure I must be doing something wrong, or am I? so any ideas would be welcome. I am a newbie and trying to learn but using this mute is not doing my confidence any good. Without it I seem to be happier with my practice although the neighbours aren't.HELP!

I am a noob, recently purchased my first banjo and knew I wanted the ability to practice late at night after my wife and children had gone to bed. The banjo that I purchased is known to be loud (RK-35) and based on my research I knew I needed a mute. After reading several stellar reviews on BanjoHangout.org I decided to order a mute from http://www.mikesbanjomute.com. Mike contacted me directly to answer a few of my questions, shipment was fast and I was picking away from day 1 with no worries of annoying the wife or waking the kids. I highly recommend Mike's Banjo Mute to anyone that is in a similar situation. Outstanding product, outstanding customer service, what more can you ask for???

Mike's Banjo Mute is the only one I've tried but only because pretty much all of the reviews, on this site, and others, point to this being the best. While I would still consider trying out the Iucci mute I don't imagine that I'll require purchasing anything else; Mike's Banjo Mute works exceptionally well!

As a player of trad music on a tenor banjo, I initially thought that I would have difficulties with the two screws on top. We trad players like low action, i.e., 1/2 bridges in some cases, and play with the hand quite close to the bridge. This is why I would consider trying an Iucci mute, as it slides below the strings. However, apparently the Iucci can eventually scratch your bridge, and most importantly, the screws on Mike's Banjo Mute do not interfere with your playing, although you do know it's there.

It appears to be precision-made and goes on and off easily, and stays put, as well. And of course, it works well! In fact, while the volume is dampened significantly the tone is well-balanced and still identifiable to the specific banjo you are playing; I use it on both of my tenors: Triple-X Model A, Late Version (resonator) and Gold Tone IT-250 White Ladye (open back). It even comes in a nifty little bag.

Why not a 10? Well, it is on the expensive side (not to say it is not worth it), including the fact that you have to pay for shipping -- it is not available commerically to my knowledge. Overall, not an issue and I fully endorse Mike's Banjo Mute!

In short: it's a must-have item for the diligent, midnight pickers out there with sensitive-eared families, or cheek-by-jowl neighbours to placate. Now the story...

It seems that there are two, opposing ideals to banjo sound: one is the search for ultimate 'tone' - this often equates to the most volume you can get out of it; the other is the search for a device that completely squashes the life out of that tone for the benefit of family sanity. I suppose we should be thankful that there are such devices: I'm not sure that budding fiddle players have such an easy time.

It's been a bit of a journey. My first Banjo teacher demonstrated a simple wood-block mute that jams on the top of a regular bridge. The sound was pleasing, offered a fair level of muting and was real cheap (about $10). Job done (so I thought). It served well for a while, but does get in the way once you get to learning to pick down at the bridge, and has a tendency to work loose while playing. The muting wasn't so pronounced, so you could play a duet with a guitar and not be drowned out.

I also bought a metal clothes-peg-style mute for twice that price (I forget why), but it's a waste of money: the tone is so raspy that it's even more annoying to your unwilling audience and you just don't want to play.

As I got a bit more adventurous with gear, I bought a rather lovely curvy bridge from Scot at earthandring@tx.rr.com. Visually pleasing, and functional, too. However, the jam-on mute was no use any more, so here's where Mike's Mute comes in handy:

It's clear from the amount of reviews here that pretty much everyone who's bought one has honoured Mike's wishes and posted a review. And why wouldn't you: it's a well-made piece of kit; does exactly what it says on the tin (i.e. provides a high level of muting); secures pretty solidly, so it's not going to work itself off; and doesn't sit so high off the bridge that it gets in the way. I was a little concerned that I'd strip the threads of the rather flimsy-looking nylon bolts, but in all the messing around I've done in the last few months, that hasn't happened.

The mute didn't actually fit the profile of the eearthandring curvy bridge, so I've bought a slide-on 'Essex' mute for that banjo. It's not as effective, but it's ok.

To my surprise, my Sierra arrived fitted with a Stelling compensated bridge, so again, the jam-on mute was not going to work. The slide-on mute was no good, because the Presto tail-piece mouts the strings at slightly different levels, so the tuning would fall out when the mute was deployed. Mike's Mute to the rescue! It fits fine on a flat top, and also over the slightly wider plan profile of the compensated bridge.

Mike's Mute is so effective that I can't really use it as an effect in performance. I tried varying the attenuation by sticking a felt pad under the brass block that sits over the bridge and varying the tension on the bolts, but that didn't work: it's either ON, or it's OFF!

One other unexpected thing is that, with the banjo muted, you can get to hear lots of other vibrations going on around the instrument you wouldn't usually worry about. I got this annoying buzzing on the 1st string when I put the mute on that I thought was introduced by the mute itself, until I did a bit of investigation and found that the source of it was the loose cover-flap of the Presto tail-piece!

Scientists have long debated the immutable laws of nature. But one that is certain and above rebuke is that no living being on the face of the earth likes to hear me practice the banjo. This statement includes my dog, who has been known to break the walls of her confine in order to escape the reach of my tones.

To rectify this problem I’ve tested a number of banjo muting solutions. The most successful solution, and one frequently suggested to me, is to simply cut the strings off my banjo. Although I can see the advantages of such an approach, it does render the instrument difficult to play.

Enter Mike’s Banjo Mute (www.mikesbanjomute.com). This small device installs on the bridge in about 3 seconds and renders a banjo so quiet, it’s almost inaudible. In fact, when not using finger picks, the instrument is almost too quiet. It’s volume approximates that of an unamplified electric guitar.

Although small, the device is somewhat bulky, and if you play finger style, it requires a slight modification of hand position. But this is hardly a problem, since tone control of a muted banjo is pretty much out of the question. For clawhammer, the presence of the mute presents no hindrance whatsoever.

I’m a total fan of this product, and at $35 it seems to be the bargain of the century.

Just received my mute from Mike. Wow, very nicely made. Excellent build quality. Really impressive. It comes in a little velvet bag. Its just nice to hold it in your hand, and look at it!

I put the mute on my White Mountain Sholo short scale with NylGut strings. One caveat - it will not work with my beloved 100 year old barn wood spillway bridge. Look at the "how to use" section on Mike's website, and when you see how it goes on, you'll understand why. Not Mike's fault, more about the bridge design.

So I quickly swapped over to the Grover bridge that originally came with the banjo. Easy enough. Easy installation of the mute. Very nice.

Nice tone. Sounds like a different instrument. Very soft, guitar like. Much quieter, but no in an unpleasant way.

If you play with your hand near the bridge, you will bump into it. No surprise there. I should probably fix my frailing and two-finger technique.

I would definitely recommend this mute. Very nicely made, works as promised, and was shipped very quickly.

Got the response from Mr. Mike saying a review would be good. I like the mute. It is a little too quiet for me when playing with others, but I like the note separation it gives for practice. My banjo has a sustain where the notes sometimes run over each other and it is more difficult to tell whether my timing is good. With this mute, I can really tell whether I'm picking unevenly or not. It's a banjo mute that works, and it doesn't fall off. Beautifully made, sturdy without damaging any part of your banjo (Well, it's brass, nylon and aluminum, you could probably damage your banjo if you really wanted to). Easily installed and removed, even on my compensated bridge. Leaves the banjo sounding crisp and clear, without string buzz. All banjo mutes take the "banjo out of the banjo" because of the physics involved. The vibrations from the strings are not fully allowed to transfer to the head's membrane because the mute's sheer weight absorbs so much energy (or vibration, which is the same), leaving precious little to make the head move air to make sound. This is a large mass/ small mass contest which the mute wins, leaving the woodwork to do the resonance job, like in a guitar. Your banjo ends up sounding like a crisp but warm western style guitar (well, mine does, anyway) at a pleasant low volume. I can now play my banjo in the next room without disturbing people, this was impossible before I got the mute. I doubt there is a better mute than Mike's out there. If you're not convinced by this review, just read on, but really, there's no need. All the reviews are pretty much the same. We're all in awe of this simple piece of equipment. If you need a banjo mute, just get this one. This could be a marriage saver, you know... The level of personal service from Mike was amazing too. I'm a fan!

It does exactly what it says it'll do; it mutes the banjo very nicely.

The screws for tightening the mute onto the bridge are made of nylon (or something plastic-like), not metal. I'm not sure why. It might never be an issue, but for the price I wouldn't expect any plastic bits.

I highly appreciate that the list price of the mute includes shipping (at least to my Zip Code). I wish every online vendor would do this!!!

Ordered a mute from Mike's website; had it in hand 3 days later. It really does the job well and is very easy to put on. For better or worse it does give the banjo an "electric" sound with much longer note sustain. I also have a Gold Tone bar mute, but it causes some buzzing, and slips around on the bridge. Mike's is a definite improvement. Actually, if you just want to reduce the decibels without altering the banjo "sound" at all, two small car wash sponge mitts in the resonator work very well. (I add Mike's mute when the wife's home).

Received the mute within days and was well satisfied. Light, well built, easy on and off and a pleasure to use. I think they both silence the banjo the same amount, but Mike's Mute has a more banjo-like sound. The thing I like the best about Mike's Mute is that I can hear each note more distinctly. With my Fielding Cutler the notes tended to run together which I'd not really noticed until I compared them side-by-side. I may have to retire my FC and get another Mike's Mute.

After reading all I could find concerning mutes, and being dissatisfied with what I had already bought, I decided to purchase Mikes Mute. It is WONDERFUL!! Very easy to install/remove, very well made, and produces the most pleasing sound. If interested in muting the banjo sound, don't buy a $20 mute, go for the best .... a mute from Mike!

Very pleased with the purchase and customer support. I received an email confirmation of my purchase from Mike and the mute arrived within a few days of order as promised. Mike was very helpful with several email replies as I was asking about bridge replacement issues also. The mute is simple to install and makes my banjo sound nice and mellow but still clear. It is easy to listen to conversations while playing and the family doesn't leave the room when I want to play. Highly recommended.

I received an email from Mike the same day thanking me for the purchase and giving me a ship date. The mute was shipped promptly and I'm very happy with it. I've had a number of mutes in the past for both my 4 string and 5 string and I like this mute far and away above the rest. It attaches quickly and easily, it's well made, and it mutes the banjo nicely for those times I want to pick it up after my 4 year old has gone to bed (in the next room). Kudos to Mike. I am going to order a second 5 string mute and for a friend and a 4 string mute for myself.

Very nice banjo mute! I had been using "The Ultimate" banjo mute from Gold Tone and it muted the banjo a bit. But one day my wife opened the door to my practice room and said "You're sounding a lot better, much cleaner playing." She was being very nice, but I realized she could hear every note and it was time to look for something quieter.

Mike's mute was the answer, it is a lot quieter, making the banjo sound like a quiet steel-string acoustic guitar. The tone is much nicer too, a very sweet sound that many people have commented favorably on.

Mike's mute is also easier to put on and take off, without fear of moving the bridge.

If you live with others in a small house like I do, this mute will save your relationships, and the sound is so nice you will actually enjoy playing with it.

I live in the south of France and banjos and their accessories are not easy to find here.
I was looking for a mute on the internet and ordered Mike's banjo mute on April 19th for less than Euros 30.- shipping included.
Mike wrote me a mail that I had to wait probably 2 or 3 weeks. Yesterday, April 25th, after only 5 days it arrived already in my letter box. Probably faster than if I had ordered a product in Europe.
Mike's banjo mute works as well and efficient as described. It is easy and fast to put on and take off and it really reduces the sound output, but the banjo is still very pleasant sounding with all five strings equally muted.
I am very satisfied with this great product.
Thank you, Mike!

Good mute, really quiets it down. Workmanship/quality is top notch. I'm a new player and my hands are kind of all over the place, the only problem I ran into is that it rises above the bridge and I hit the knobs. Knocked it off, and the whole bridge even went down a couple times as a result. However as I am learning how to position my hands this is becoming more of a non-issue. I would recommend to anybody.

After considering other mutes (GoldTone and Mystic) and reading various reviews, I decided to buy Mike's Banjo mute. I was not sold on the GoldTone mute and really thought Mike's mute would be a better option... whcih it is completely.

I received the first mute in 2 days of placing my order, which is hard to beat. I like it so much I ordered another one for me and one for my brother-in-law. I bought my first one via banjoteacher.com (which actually shipped directly from Mike) because I could not access Mike's website directly on my home computer for some unknown reason (that has nothing to do with his website, but rather my ISP). Then I bought two more directly through Mike's site.

The material used is solid and I am not worried about it falling apart or breaking.

It is really easy to use and drops the volume down significantly. It kind of reminds me of playing an electric guitar unplugged.

I must say, my upstairs neighbor is MUCH happier, my wife does not mind being in the same room with me when I practice and our cats don't jump every time I play. This thing works very well; certainly beyond my expectations.

I was not sure what to expect with Mike's mute. I read all the reviews, and I have had a Gold Tone mute for about 2 years. Frankly, I was not unhappy with the Gold Tone - it did the job okay. My only concern was the fact that I have re-glued the fuzzy interior a few times, as it came loose from the brass casing every few months. But, like most banjo "tinkerers" I wanted to see if there was something better on the market.

The Mike's Mute had lots of good reviews, but it also costs twice as much at the Gold Tone. However, a $34 investment in something that will save a marriage, and keep a sleeping newborn sleeping seemed reasonable to try. Besides you have a 7-day money back guarantee if I didn't like it. But, with a the radiused neck on one of my banjos, I felt like I needed to talk to someone - and Mike was there to take my call and give advice(Thanks).

Today, I got the mute, and tried it. I really liked it. It was nice a quiet. But was it quieter than the traditional Gold Tone? I went back and forth, and swore Mike's had the better and quieter sound. But, then I thought I was biased... I mean. I have a mute already that technically functions with the Gold Tone. Was I just trying to make myself feel better about spending the money?

So, I had my PREGNANT wife sit across the room with her eyes closed. I played one mute than the other. She picked your mute and said it was quieter and less "nasal" sounding to the Gold Tone. Then she said, "I think I could even watch TV while you play with that one..."

I am sold. And EVEN MORE...My PREGNANT wife is sold.

I ordered a 2nd mute today for my flat bridged banjos. I liked it THAT much.

As a beginner, I tend to pick very heavily and as a consequence was banished to practice away from the family. Wanting a solution that would allow closer family contact, I looked for a solution and found Mike's mute. I am very happy with the results, and the banjo is now almost as quiet as an electric solid body guitar. It gives the banjo an interesting new tone and allows me to practice with little disturbance to others. It get a 9 out of 10 as it was a bit of a tight fit between the strings when mounting, but no problem once mounted.

Received my Mike's Mute (standard version) a few days ago. It was a very smooth transaction and it shipped extremely fast.

Mike sent an email confirming shipment and saying I'd probably get it in about week. It actually arrived within about 3 days.

I can't really compare it to any other mutes since I've never owned any others, but from what I've seen so far, I think it would be hard to beat.

This mute is made extremely well, easy to put on and take off, and it definitely does a great job of "Muting" the banjo.

I had tried the "clothespin" method etc. but that just didn't do the trick for me.

With Mikes Mute, it's like turning a lion's roar into a kitten's meow !

It's hard to describe the sound, but kinda similar to a "very quiet" acoustic guitar. It's a very sweet and pleasing sound and as I expected, my wife and kids LOVE it ! :-)

I normally use it when I want to practice in the evening etc., but don't feel like going off like a hermit to another part of the house. I can actually stay in the living room with the rest of the family and practice, without disturbing them or driving them crazy.

The only small problem I had was on a Kat Eyz Prowler Spice bridge. It's not a radius bridge, but the ends of the bridge do kinda taper off a little. When I had the mute on that bridge, the 5th string was slightly louder than the other strings. Not extreme, but noticeable. I think it was because due to the slight taper, the mute wasn't making as good of contact on the 5th string side. I put a small piece of tape under it at the 5th string and it took care of the issue.
So far I've tried it on a couple other bridges (Snuffy and a Huber) and it performed flawlessly.

I would recommend this mute to anyone wanting to occasionally 'quiet' their banjo.

You would think, living in New York City, I would be able to find a local store that sold banjo mutes. No luck. Not even Mando Bros down in Staten Island. I was trying to decide between Mikes mute, which everyone was raving about here, and one from the Deering website, which was $10 cheaper. Took a chance on Mike and I am very happy with my decision and purchase. I purchased on Sunday, got an email from Mike Sunday night saying thank you and that he would have it in the mail by Tuesday, (Monday was a Holiday), and I received the mute Friday.

The mute is well built and exactly what I needed. Practicing in a NYC apartment late at night wasnt possible before. Now I can play all night long and not bother anyone.

I highly recommend Mikes Banjo Mute to anyone. Great product and great service.

The mute works as advertised. It installs easily and is a solid piece. It does a good job decreasing the volume and making it easier on the ears. Of course your instrument is going to sound less “banjoey” and more like a banjola perhaps. It does result in greater sustain and less decay. None of these points has any negative effect on practicing, however. In fact, I kind of like the different sound and it prompted me to compose a tune that I will upload to the Hangout to give you a flavor of its tone.

When I first started using it months ago I was having a problem in that I often bumped or brushed into it and knocked it off the bridge. I think another reviewer also mentioned this. It became annoying and I thought it would cause me to downgrade my rating somewhat. However, that problem seems to have almost disappeared as I have gotten used to having it there, so I have no reservations about recommending it.

Yet another happy camper! The mute arrived 10 days after I ordered it; a really nice email from Mike asking how I heard about the mute-then ANOTHER to thank me for my reply!

I consider myself very lucky indeed to have discovered this GREAT piece of banjo kit straight off; from what I've seen, some people have spent a lot of time and money to get to the stage I'm at now; a great sounding instrument that I can " calm down" when I need to, either for practise or for singing to ( singing some songs with a banjo is the equivalent to playing lullabies on bagpipes )

The banjo sounds great when muted - still all the tone and sustain that I want, but no projection. Yes, it's different to an unmuted banjo, but the difference does not diminish the sweet sound. Beautifully crafted - I'd like to bet mike has a drawerful of prototypes somewhere! Easy to fit: easy to remove. Easy to like. Nothing to dislike.

As I said at the start - nice one Mike!

Now I can play all night if I want. My Dad heard me practicing from the other room and asked me if I bought a new instrument. It gives the banjo a clear bell like tone. Good or bad; depending on how you look at it, it don't sound like a banjo anymore. I like it as I have more versatility for non-bluegrass tunes. Apologies to you bluegrass purists.

I want to add one more to the list of people here that think highly of Mike's Banjo Mute.
When searching for a mute I wanted one that was well made, durable, would significantly decrease the sound level, not totally distort the sound or buzz, and be affordable. Well, I am happy to say that Mike's scored on all of those.
I am able to learn the banjo now without disturbing anyone and without having to close myself off in a room away from everyone.
The mute is easy to put on and take off. You don't need to tighten it much so I don't think the durability of the nylon screws, as someone else had mentioned, will be an issue.

A work of art. I purchased this mute for practice purposes so that I will not disturb wife or neighbors. It outperforms all of my expectations. The main thing I like about it is that it does not affect sustain. Tone and sustain are (for me, as a novice) the most difficult things to master, and the mute allows me to know whether I am getting close (or not) to the proper tone. I mainly use it on an inexpensive resonator, but also use it it on a wood-head open-back practice banjo, and it works similarly, but does not attenuate the sounds nearly as much as it does on a resonator. One satisfied customer.

Update after two years of use: This mute remains the best that I have tried for steel strings: I use it regularly on a steel-stringed Ramsey Woody with great satisfaction.  I have also tried the tenor version on steel strings with similar satisfying results. I have found very few mutes that perform acceptably with nylon strings. This one does "alright" with some buzzing, but is not optimal. For steel strings I reach for this one every single time.

I started playing banjo last year, and I think I have been making good progress. I don't know about everyone else but during the past year I have managed to truly and thoroughly annoyed my entire family. They have been very supportive and have never asked me to 'please stop' playing but I do know 'the look' and what it means.

After months and months of irritating my family I started researching a way to make my banjo quieter. The first thing I tried way putting a polishing cloth in the tailpiece. That helped but wasn't really enough. Next I starting picking without picks. This made the banjo much quieter but really messed up my lessons. I found it difficult to transition from playing without picks to playing with picks. So my research continued.

I liked the idea of a banjo mute. It made perfect sense to dampen the vibrations from bridge to the head. I found the Gold Tone mute and Mike's mute. I was actually in the process of ordering the Gold Tone mute when I saw a video for Mike's mute. I was amazed how well it worked. With most things I didn't fully believe the video. I searched for more and found several examples. They all showed the same amazing muting capabilities. I decided to order Mike's mute instead. I am really glad I did.

Using Mike's mute allows me to use picks and play in the family room with the TV going and the whole family present. I actually need to use picks, otherwise the volume is way too low. Even though the mute does change the tone of the banjo, it transforms the tone into a very mellow chime.

I won't go quite as far as saying the Mike's mute saved my marriage and kept me from being kicked out of the house and becoming a homeless, roving banjo player, but it was close. Thank's Mike for coming up with your mute design and being so great to work with. I think every banjo player should own one of your mutes for each of their banjos.

Well, it does exactly what you want it to. Mutes your banjo to about the sound of a normally strummed guitar, maybe quieter. Fits quick and ease. I can't see any reason it would wear anything over time. Good purchase for the considerate ;) Might be a bad habit to use it all the time, so find a place to be loud. But when you can't...this is the answer.

I purchased a Mike's Mute after seeing one of a similar design in use. I was somewhat unhappy with the Gold Tone mute I had purchased when I took up the five string, it didn't reduce the volume enough to be called a "mute".

However, Mike's is very successful on that score: it dramatically reduces the level by twice the the Gold Tone (which constantly shifts, sags, falls off, and de-fuzzes black material onto the instrument). With the new mute, my resonated banjo is now very quiet - more than enough.  I can now practice without fear of disturbing neighbors on the other side of my walls.

My only minor complaint, which I can easily rectify, is that the bolts that the knobs screw into are made of plastic. There may be a technical reason, but those mutes of a similar design that I have seen before were of all metal construction. And so, I am a little less confident of the mute's durability than I otherwise would have been. Admittedly, I have not contacted Mike's Mutes to ask why plastic is used instead of steel or brass, and there may yet be a valid reason for it.

I may simply replace the bolts with  "Home Depot" equivalents when they eventually wear out or get cross threaded.

Addendum:

Mike's Mutes contacted me today and explained that nylon screws improve the tonal quality of a muted instrument: "I wanted to address your concern about the nylon screws I use on my mutes.  I've tried metal screws like the other mute you saw but it added a harshness to the sound.  Also the nylon adds a flexibility between the top and legs of the mute which prevents string buzz.  One of the major problems the the other mute.  In the time I've been producing mutes there has only been one broken bolt that I happily replaced.  In that case the mute was dropped.

If you do replace the screws I would be interested in hearing the results.  The screw is a 6-32 X 1 1/2 and is available at Lowes or Home Depot."

This is a very well-made, functional, and good-looking piece. Mike has hit a home run here. Furthermore, the quietness of the sound allows you to hear things in your playing that are not so obvious at full volume but may need attention. Things like pick noise are easier to hear, plus you can hear fully the details of what is happening with your left hand; hammers, pulls, and slides sound like they are under a microscope. This is now an essential practice tool for me. I plan to get a radiused model too for my RB-12. You will not regret buying Mike's Banjo Mute. Plus, Mike is a great guy.

I can't give works that can describe my satisfaction with Mike's mute. Amazed is the best that I can say. I was not prepared for it to work as it did. I can play (I use that word loosely) and watch TV and not disturb anyone including myself. Probably the best banjo accessory purchase I have ever made. I think I will order another just to have a spare. No picker should be without one.

The most important feature of a mute is that it mutes, Mike's mute does that very well. Additionally it should not cause a change of tone or tuning. Mikes mute gets an A+. Its also easy to install and remove and stays put. It does not interfere with my picking. Its also nicely made, no one will ask you "what is that ugly thing".
Mike is no farther away than you phone and is friendly and helpful.

I ran across this mute on Mike's webpage and was sold on the video demonstration. This is a well made piece. I had purchased a mute years ago when I was first picked up the banjo. I never was satisfied with it. I can now watch my favorite show on TV and play like crazy without disturbing everyone in the household. Sounds like a muted dobro , beautiful. Well worth the money. I can't say that I've tried a bunch of different banjo mutes but I can say for sure that I am not disappointed by Mike's. It gently clamps on to my bridge so there are no worries about it falling off or damaging the bridge. The best part is that when the kids are going to sleep I can still play. I always got complaints when they were trying to go to sleep, even when I was playing as quietly as I could. Now with Mike's mute on I am wailing on those strings and not a peep from the second floor. In fact it's so quite my wife came down and said that the banjo has never sounded so good ;-)
If I had to find a comment, I would mention that there is a tendency for the strings to whine a bit with the mute on but not enough for me to change my rating.

I bought based upon the many reviews I saw. I can say that it is very well crafted, works wonderfully, and is one of the few products made where you can still actually talk to the maker...Mike. I have a rather unique situation in that I am a truck driver and a team driver at that. That means that I have a co-driver and we drive the entire US 24/7 27 days out of 30. It means we live on the truck and a banjo is not a quiet instrument. I am relearning after having been away from it for about 25 years. I have respect for my co-driver who I don't wish to expose to the many hours of listening horror that go into learning the banjo. This mute reduces volume to a level that he can't even hear it when I am in the bunk playing and he is driving. Our truck is not that loud so I would say that is an excellent test of its purpose. If you have never used one, it simply has two small legs that slide under your bridge and then you tighten a couple of screws and the brass bar contacts the strings on top of the bridge. I am no physicist but I guess that it prevents the transference of vibration from the bridge to the banjo head. It does not mute the strings like your fingers do when you don't press down to the fret. It leaves the strings to "ring" or sustain. There is no "buzzing". It doesn't change the way the banjo plays or feels and doesn't get in the way of your picking hand. It goes on or off in a few seconds without any trouble and does not threaten any damage to any of your banjo's components. One reviewer mentioned the "plastic" screws but I believe they are nylon and were specifically chosen for their properties in the component rather than a "cost cutting" measure. I think Mike must have shipped it before I hit the send button on the order. He makes a great product, gets it to you as quickly as anyone could, and is a great guy to talk to. I highly recommend. Thanks Mike!!

I am impressed with this "Made in the USA" product. The workmanship is very good. This mute works much better then the Gold Tone I have and does not mark up the bridges like my antique mute. I would recomend this mute for anyone who needs to tone down thier practicing and not disturb those with a lesser appreaciation for the music of a Banjo. I practice between 4:00 and 6:00 am so this works out well for me. Now MIke...........about my fiddle

I’m not really a banjo player. I used to play guitar, but due to a certain neurological condition I’m not able to use my left hand properly any more, so I did not play music for many years. Then it occurred to me that the banjo, with its fewer strings and open tuning, could help me as a therapeutic device, to regain some strength and control over my numb hand. The only problem was volume. When I’m doing my exercises it often doesn’t sound very musically at all, annoying every living creature around. Initially I tried attaching clothespins to the bridge. It helped a bit, but volume reduction was not nearly enough, and there was always the risk of hitting a pin and dislocating or maybe even damaging the bridge. But then I became aware of this mute, and what an ingenious and well-made little piece of equipment it turned out to be! It is doing exactly what I was hoping for. Volume reduction is substantial, and it still sounds good and inspiring (albeit different of course). Now I can practice e.g. while watching TV without having to crank up the volume of the set, or with my wife being in the same room. And it can safely be installed or removed in an instant. All I can say is that I’m very satisfied and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to reduce the volume of his/her instrument.

Since I could not find a banjo mute in local music stores here in Vienna/Austria I had to buy online, fearing that I would not get the item within many weeks. But to my surprise, less than one week (!) after placing the order it materialized in my mailbox, packed neatly and safely. I even received a very personal and understanding Email from Mike himself – now what does that say about great service?! And the price is a bargain considering that worldwide shipping is included. There really seems to be something special about small companies that care about their products and customers. Thank you Mike for everything!

This accessory is the bridge to a better place! I've not been able to play banjo for the last 5 years because of living in an Apartment and thin walls. I am new to the banjo and have been practicing. Being a beginner I suck. I suck VERY LOUDLY !! That hadn't been a problem but recently I have been forced to move into an apartment...I hadn't been able to practice at all and was getting lonely for it... So I just Googled "banjo mute". Mike's mute was first in the search results. I read about it and then decided to do some research. It's not the cheapest thing out there, but I didn't want something that was hard to put on, or something that would move the bridge or damage the instrument or get in the way. It seems this mute comes highly recommended so I bought it..I received it in about 3 days. It was well packaged. It looks like it's well built and will probably last forever. It's very easy to put on. It really does quiet the banjo. It gives the banjo a nice "chiming" dobro like quality that I really like to listen to. I pray that it prevents me from getting kicked out of my apartment. No one has complained yet and it's been 3 days! Thanks Mike!

As a brand new banjo player, the person who sold me a banjo (Bobb62) highly recommended Mike's Banjo Mute. I have a Deering Calico and have read (heard?) that the only banjo that is louder is a Stelling. I can't believe how much this mute quiets down the Banjo...almost too quiet. What I also love about this product is the ease of installing and un-installing, the quality of materials, and the fact that it does not distort the pitch tone of the strings. It also fits perfectly under the picking hand when you arch your hand the way you are supposed to. There is no way that this item will ever harm your bridge, and it works perfectly on my Arthur Hatfield compensated bridge.

(I have not received any kind of compensation to endorse this product - I just really, really like it!)

The mute is easy to put on and take off and stays securely in place regardless of the orientation of the banjo.

The knobs on the mute do stick up enough from the bridge that one's hand could touch them as it curves over the bridge. I only noticed this as a complete beginner trying out hand-arm-wrist positions with no armrest. After attaching an armrest and working on my arm and hand placement to increase stability I do not even get that close to the mute. So I doubt it would interfere with most people's setup and hand positioning, but everybody is a little different so it is worth considering how your hand currently rests.

Now, regarding sound, the mute makes the banjo sound very guitar like to me. I suspect this is similar to what all bridge mounted mutes sound like, but I do not know. It is a pleasant enough sound but a shockingly different one from the standard banjo so I often choose to instead use a hand towel between the head and coordinator rod when I only have to be somewhat quiet. However the mute offers a significantly quieter sound and so is still useful.

I bought this mute primarily because I play hard and my banjos are loud as are most banjos. It does a great job of quieting down the notes of the banjo, and my own hearing remains fine. I have mostly Nechville Enterprise bridges on my banjos and the mute fits them with no problem, even though they are rounded for compensation. The sound is quiet, and somewhat "dobro-like", and the notes have great sustain. It is easy to apply and is not in the way of my picking hand. It comes in a cloth pouch with a drawstring. It's the best mute I have purchased. I recommend it for all banjo pickers.

This is one product that does exactly what the man making it says it will do! The demo video that you can watch is completely true - it really reduces the sound of my resonator-equiped banjo to that of an acoustic guitar, or maybe even less. I am really amazed and tickled pink to have this mute now. I will be able to practice ANY TIME OF DAY OR NIGHT because it makes it so quite. And to beat it all, the banjo still sounds great! No buzzing or anything abnormal to destract you. I currently have a compensated bridge on my banjo and it works very well with it, too. This is the best money I have spent, so far, on my new hobby - simplistic design and construction, quality materials, and great customer service have made this a spectactularly positive experience! Do not hesitate to buy one of these, if you need a mute! Don't waste your money on anything else - this is a great product!

This mute works great! I was a but put ut by the plastic screws but I see the purose in the design, it protects the bridge from being crushed by overtightening. The thing that shocked me is that the banjo no longer sounds like a banjo. Kind of like stumming a chord on an acoustic guitar and strumming the same chord on an electric guitar. A very radical difference but I would say the volume drops by 80-90% in my opinion. Works well with a standard bridge with 3 feet and 2 openings but I don't think it would work well with some bridges (spillway with numerous small holes). It might be a hard fit with a moon bridge if there is much curve, not sure. Overall a quality product, yes I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I wanted an effective banjo mute as I live in a flat (apartment) and wanted to reduce the sound so as not to annoy my neighbours when practising. The mute I was using was fairly good but still very loud when playing with picks. I therefore looked on the Internet and came across Mike's Banjo Mute. The testimonials by well-known banjo players convinced me to buy one of Mike's mutes which I did. It was sent from America to England and arrived in just over a week which was excellent. The mute itself is considerably quieter than my original and is clearly a quality product. It is made of solid brass and is an attractive addition to the banjo. The website says it is easy to fit onto the banjo and this is indeed the case. I had no trouble whatsoever - it fits in seconds. The two screws can be tightened lightly by hand - no screwdriver or other tool is required. The mute comes in a nice little soft fabric bag which can then be stored in the banjo case. It was good doing business with Mike as he provides his e-mail address and answers any questions straightaway. I am happy with Mike's Banjo Mute and have no hesitation in recommending it.

I had a Fielding-Cutler mute that I lost and was looking for a replacement. I found Mike's mute and had to get it. I was a little worried at first when I saw the plastic screw adjustments, but can honestly say they work as well (or better) than the adjustments on my former FC banjo mute. The brass on the mute looks great and it attaches to the bridge much more easily than my old mute. It works just as advertised and I'm sure my upstairs neighbor appreciates it (I like the idea that I can practice into the night). My only comment for improvement is that the radius on the radius model is a bit much. It doesn't seem to affect the sound, but it seems like it is a bit too much of a curve. I actually ordered a second (non-radius) to use on one of my banjos that has a much smaller curve. Overall, a great product and great service.

I've had Mike's mute for about a week now and have had some time to compare it to the Goldtone Iucci mute that I had being using before.

PROS:
1. Mike's mute is well-designed and solid and will probalby last for years. The fuzzy material glued to the inside of the Iucci mute is already starting to separate from the metal.

2. Mike's mute mutes all five strings equally. The Iucci mute always leaves one string (either the 1st or 5th, depending on which way you place the mute) less muted than the others.

3. Mike's mute will work on any width of bridge. I have my doubts that the Iucci would work well on a really thin bridge.

4. It's a close call, but Mike's mute does a better job at overall muting than the Iucci.

5. Great service.

CONS:

1. The Iucci preserves more tone than Mike's mute. However, that additional tone comes at a cost - namely, amount of muting.

2. Mike's mute extends above the top of the bridge by about 1/2" or so. It could just be the way I play, but the top of the mute sometimes tickles the palm of my hand. It doesn't really interfere with right hand placement, though.

3. Cost - $35 is a hefty price. But considering I'd probably have to replace the Iucci in a year or so, Mike's mute is a good deal.

Overall, if you need a mute that's going to... well, mute... Mike's is the way to go.

I purchased Mike’s Mute after a fellow player demonstrated it to me. At first I thought the price was a little much but once I got it I soon found out that this was a quality made and nice looking accessory. Shipping and email were very prompt and personable. The only quibble I would have with it is the height, while not very much, is enough for my hand to hit and I tend to push it off after a lot of practicing. However this is due to my playing lower to the bridge then would be considered proper. I give nothing but high praise to Mike for emails response and support even after the sale. I would not hesitate to purchase another if I ever lost this one. However I would not need to because my wife would replace it first. This is really a great product! Finally, I'm not forced to go to the basement to play banjo. The mute keeps the banjo quiet enough to not disturb everyone in the house but still allows enough sound for you to hear what you are playing. This should come with every banjo sold.

Exactly what I was looking for! As advertised, this mute is easy to install and very effective. I just moved to a small studio apartment after living in a house for 10 years, and realized quickly that I just could not play my loud banjo at any time of day without wearing out my neighbors. Now I am picking again and very happy!

My first mute but it seems excellent. It is very easy to put on or take off. The banjo still retains it's tone.

The sound levels are much lower. Admittedly to start off with it feels a little like you've put ear plugs in, and I kept swallowing to see if my ears would pop, but I've gotten used to that.

I have two small children, and this mute makes it so that I can play when they are asleep, and also they don't go mental if I play when they are awake!

I had this shipped from america and the postage was included (so good value for money for me!) and it arrived within 7 days!

Thanks.

This is an excellent mute--way better than my previous solution of stuffing a dishrag into my resonator. It's well made and sturdy, and screws on top of the bridge in a matter of seconds. The volume is substantially lowered, but the banjo can still be heard just fine for practicing purposes. Highly recommended!

About a year ago I purchased Mike's Banjo Mute for a 4 string Bacon and Day banjo. At full cry it can almost peel paint, but with the mute it produces a pleasing faint guitar sound, allowing me to even practice at night when my wife's asleep. It worked so well I just got another for my tubaphone 5 string, with the same results. These mutes are the real deal; they go on easily, do not interfere with playing, and really cut the sound!

I just got a Mike's mute. I have used a large soft foam plug in the back before, but that softens the tones. I was very pleasantly surprised when I got the Mike's mute on my old metal pot Stew Mac kit. It kept the tones, but made everything a LOT quieter. It is nicely made and looks good. It was easy to attach to the 3 legged bridge I have on it now. It does not get in the way of my frailing at all. I'm really happy with its performance. I even think my wife is impressed. I was playing with it on while we watched TV yesterday evening. No complaints from her. That's a miracle.

By far the quietest mute I have seen. It is quality made and easy to take on and off in just seconds. It is still loud enough that you can here to play. It does not get in the way of your fingers around the bridge and you can play as hard as you do normally. There is no buzzing of the strings. This slips under the bridge and does not touch the head. I give Mike's Mute a 10 out of 10. Also I need to mention it comes in a nice draw string bag. My wife loves me again!....well maybe....it does help!

A month ago I never heard of a banjo mute. Now, I thankfully own 2...
The first mute I bought, after reading many positive reviews, was "Mike's Banjo Mute”. The second was Gold Tone’s Ultimate banjo mute. They are both technically different, and both do what they are supposed to do. However, if you are going for a “let’s not wake the kids”, practice any time I want, solution. Then, there is no contest, Mike’s mute wins hands down.
Focusing just on the sound cutting quality of the mutes and not the technical aspect of them, as was already accurately done in the other reviews, I’m going to explain them both like this… Picture in your mind, taking the volume of your normal banjo and cutting it in half… That’s about what you would get out of using Gold Tone’s Ultimate mute. Now, picture the sound of your banjo at half of normal, and then cut it in half again. That’s about the volume you’ll get from Mike’s mute. (As a side note, I am using these mutes on open back banjos, but I assume the dynamics would be the same on a banjo with a resonator.)
Or, if you want to look at it based strictly on a cost perspective, Gold Tone’s mute is about $14 and as I said, basically cut’s the volume in half. Mike’s is more expensive at $35, but it’s also twice as quiet. It is kind of a “get what you pay for” type of thing. Which also holds true for the quality of the mutes themselves, Mike’s is by far a higher quality accessory and will far outlast Gold Tone’s mute.
Also the only technical thing I will add, because I don't recall if I saw it in any other reviews… As a test I tuned my banjo with my electronic tuner and then used the tuner with both mutes individually, and neither mute altered the tuning.
The only real negative is the fact that they are “mutes”, and I immediately take them off any chance I get. But, the benefit of practicing at any time far outweighs any negative for either mute. In my situation, if it wasn’t for being able to use mutes, (especially Mike’s) I wouldn’t be able to practice remotely as often as I can now.
Lastly, I want to give Mike props for his great customer service and quick shipping time. I ordered through his website on a Tuesday and received it on Thursday. The Gold Tone I purchased locally.

All of the information you have heard about these mutes is true. This product is incredible. The banjo is muted perfectly. I am one of those people who really enjoy picking away while watching my favorite TV show. My girlfriend doesn't exactly appreciate an incredibly loud instrument being played in her ears while she watches TV. This mute is great. It dampens the sound without any impact to the instrument. You lightly tighten it to the top of the bridge and you're set. The mute has no negatives to the banjo. It doesn't make the bridge move, the banjo stays in tune. I just can't tell you how much I love it. You can pick all night long and no one will notice.

Let's talk about service for a minute. I ordered this mute directly from Mike's website. This was a very easy process and had it completed in minutes. Now I was ordering from Ontario, Canada. Mike being in Utah that little mute had to quite a distance to go. I had the mute in a week! I was so happy and surprised to received it.

Price. $34.50 (includes worldwide shipping). I couldn't believe this. $34.50 including shipping. No hidden cost, no charges at the border it was incredible. The mute is built from quality parts and could easily last forever I will never need a new one unless I lose it. If I did lose it I would buy 5 more just to make sure I never go without again!

This is an incredible product that is a necessity for any banjo player. Give the family a bit of a break and buy one of these amazing products.

Thank you!

It is easy to fit and remove and it does its job incredibly well. The volume levels are very low, yet it still maintains a lovely tone with good sustain. I would highly recommend this item to anyone considering the purchase of a banjo mute. I also feel that with the volume muted, I am playing with more confidence, in the knowledge that it is not annoying family or neighbours. All in all, a brilliant little device.

First, after purchasing the mute, I got a confirmation email from Mike himself with a shipping time-frame. It arrived in under a week from UT to PA. I would imagine if there was any issue with the mute i could have easily responded back directly to Mike and he would sort things out, seems like a very nice guy.

The mute itself is built well, very solid construction. Installs very quickly, pops on and barely needs tightened down to function, so don't worry about harming your bridge.

The sound of the banjo with the mute on, I think, sounds most like an unplugged, hollow-body guitar. Think Gretch or 335 unplugged, the volume is about the same as well. Basically just eliminates the metallic sounds of the banjo leaving a nice 'unplugged electric guitar' type sound.

The strings and banjo still resonate very naturally. Strings are not muted to the point where their sustain is truncated or staccato. Both scruggs style and clawhammer sound natural and notes respond as they should and ring out as they should, just quieter!

Overall, I think this is the mute of mutes. It makes more sense to me than the GoldTone mute which braces the bridge beneath the strings. This mute replicates the effect of palm muting on a guitar, but maintains sustain, which is perfect. Its built like a tank, installs and stays in place, doesn't interfere with your playing whatsoever, and functions perfectly bringing volume down significantly. Also, the tone itself is enjoyable and actually neat, i could see using it in a recording setting for some very mellow banjo sounds.

Great product, great buy experience, great functionality, ingenious piece of gear.

Just got my capo today and am very happy with it. It's very nicely made, and delivery from the maker was fast.

It actually changes the tone on our banjo more than you might think, and much more dramatically than the video on Mike's website suggested to me (maybe because I don't play a resonator). Someone on the forum somewhere said the sound was a lot like a dojo, though I've never played one. The mute certainly makes the banjo sound sweeter and less percussive than it would normally do.

I also have a Gold Tone mute which is less effective in damping sound, but preserves the banjo tone better; if I stick a dishtowel in the back the sound is about the same volume as with Mike's mute (the dishtowel doesn't seem to affect Mike's mute nearly as much, though it does take it down a notch further).

I'm actually happy having all three methods of muting. Mike' mute allows a nice change in tone, and I am no longer as interested in getting a dojo for latenight practice, since I think the locals will be able to tolerate a banjo muted with Mike's mute even if they can hear it in the background. Though I haven't tested that theory yet, and may end up back in the kitchen after all.

I love my Mike's Mute and use it a lot, but it kept vibrating loose and coming off. The first "mod" I tried was adding two little black rubber "O" rings that I picked up at Ace Hardware for .59 cents or so underneath the nuts that hold the top on. This helped but did not entirely solve the problem. I then drilled two tiny holes, one on each foot, on the aluminum feet that go on the underside of the bridge and super-glued a toothpick into each side. I then cut the toothpick down to about 1/16" and filed down the nub just so the feet would not slide out from under the bridge. Now when I slide the aluminum feet under the bridge the toothpicks snug up against the front of the bridge. This cured everything. I can play for hours with no loosening or slipping. I think the toothpick mod is what keeps it from slipping but the "O" rings probably help the mute not crush the bridge and strings so much and act a little like a shock absorber. I will post pictures on a forum soon if you want to check my posts for photos.

Mike's banjo mute fits well on the bridge, goes on in a few seconds without damaging the bridge, and is an effective mute that produces a nice ring with sustain. I like the tone it produces. After using it a while I got to wondering about a few things, maybe Mike will see this and consider some of these ideas (then again, maybe not, since I am not sure these ideas are very practical). Anyway, here are some of my thoughts:
1. The mute produces such a nice sound that I wondered what sounds or tones it would produce if the top brass "bar" was made of a resonant wood like cocobolo (or even walnut).
2. Also, wondered about how other metals would sound (copper, silver, aluminum, etc.), or materials like bone.
3. If the mute top "bar" were made of wood, would it be possible to put two small "hot dot" pickups in it for a quick, simple way to electrify a banjo when needed. Small wires could go back to a clip-on jack on the tailpiece.
Anyway, Mike's banjo mute is a great product just how it is, and of the many mutes that I have tried, it is the best one.

I really like it! I've seen great reviews about it where the only complaint is that once it's muted, it doesn't sound like a banjo anymore. Well sure, I doubt any mute for any instrument in the world can reproduce the same sound at a lower volume. Although the sound of the mute is different from the regular banjo, it's significantly quieter, and I actually kinda like the sound it makes. Reminds me of what a harmon mute does to a trumpet (Think Miles Davis' Flamenco Sketches off the "Kind of Blue" album). This gives my banjo kind of a mellow sweet sound. I got used to it quickly. When I removed it after about 15 minutes of playing, my ears had to readjust to the brighter unmuted sound again. I will get a lot of use out of my Mike's Banjo Mute!

My only complaint isn't really Mike's Banjo Mute's fault, it's my own . I've gotten lazy with my right hand technique, and my 5th finger will occasionally come to rest on the side of the bridge or be too close to it. MBM makes that problem worse. But then again, it makes me put the fingers in a more appropriate position, so maybe that's a good thing.

As far as equipment I use with the mute: I play a Morgan Monroe MNB 1 (got it at BanjoHut) then had it pimped out by Jon at Woodsong's Lutherie in Boulder, CO. My $450 banjo sounds like a $2K Banjo now. See my related post.

Just received my Mike's Banjo Mute on Saturday and have been practicing with and without it being installed on the banjo, and MAN what a difference. My wife even commented on how much more she enjoyed listening to my practicing with the mute installed. I don’t think it was my practicing she enjoyed so much but rather the peace and quiet she is now getting. It really is amazing the amount of sound reduction you get out of this mute, but yet you can still hear the sweet melody of the banjo and every mistake you make, at least in my case. Good job Mike.

I admittedly haven't tried many banjo mutes but I've seen and heard a few. This mute is solidly built, goes on easily and is very effective. It reduces my very loud banjo to about the volume of a semi-hollow electric guitar. A real plus is that it stays out of the way.
It is well-worth the cost and Mike is a terrific communicator. I am hedging my bet by giving it merely a "9" rating, just in case there is something better out there - - but I don't see how.

After reading some good reviews of Mikes Mute here on www.banjohangout.org . Being a brand new student with absolutely no stringed instrument experience. I decided it would be prudent to purchase one for all my loved ones, (Ears)… Shipping was fast, instillation was fast, about 15 seconds, with picks on. I was impressed! I know anyone can say something is quiet, but I thought it would be cool to put some loose numbers to it. So this is some information I gathered, using a Recording King RK-87, freshly tuned with cryo strings. Placed a Fisher Scientific sound level meter ( at my playing level noise meter : ) @ 3 feet in front of me on a table; did several Open G strums, and simple forward rolls, in an average sized carpeted room. Here is what I gathered, all numbers rounded.

Open G strum w/o Mute 97db
Open G strum w/ Mikes 76db
Reduction 21db

Forward Roll w/o Mute 94db
Forward Roll w/ Mikes 69db
Reduction 25db

Greater distance will only make this better, impressive! Earplugs range between 22 and 38 db reduction in noise; I know I work on jet engines. Also mention that my instrument did not lose tonal quality, ring still there. My family will be indebted to you Mike, and never know it. Thank You for a well thought out product.

I bought Mike's Banjo Mute after reading lots of positive reviews and comments in threads on the Banjo Hangout forums. I use the mute with an open-back banjo with a bog standard bridge. The mute works as well as I could have hoped: it hugely reduces the volume of the banjo while nonetheless allowing it still to produce a very nice and rather distinctively delicate sound with (as remarked by others) enormous levels of sustain. I find the mute to be unobtrusive, too; it doesn't get in the way of my left (nonfretting - I'm a lefty) hand. Also, it's a very nicely made item supplied with a handy bag. Worth very penny!

Wow, what a terrific piece of equipment! Easy to use, great sound and the other household members and neighbours are delighted! I love the way it brings out the ring tone on my ancient Alvarez - I actually prefer the sound of the banjo in it's muted state.

A very effective way to reduce the volume without affecting the tone. I opted for this over the GoldTone version (my banjo is a GoldTone) as it looked like a nicely engineered piece of equipment. It is! Well worth the money as it means I can practise next door to the children when they are sleeping and not wake them. I am very happy with my purchase. Also, Mike got it to me in record time over the Christmas period.

I'm amazed at how this simply little device can significantly turn the volume down on my Recording King R20 yet still retain the ring and sustain. I can put it on without removing my finger picks or thumb pick and it does not interfere with my hand position.

Until I bought this mute my banjo playing could be heard throughout the house at night and in next door's yard. Now there is no way I could be heard in the next room (where my wife is trying to sleep), yet the tone from the banjo is just as sweet and enjoyable.

Plus, if you buy direct from Mike, he takes the time to email you personally. That's like buying a capo and having a message from Mr Shubb in your inbox!

I am very impressed with this mute. I live in Brooklyn, NYC, in an apartment building where the walls are not as soundproof as a musician would want. The banjo is a loud instrument. Mike's mute has enabled me to practice at night without upsetting the neighbors or my wife. It's a nicely engineered, weighty and handsome little piece of equipment made of solid brass, aluminum and the screws are plastic. I assume the plastic is a choice dictated by sound transmission and not cost. Given the solid bar of brass, I can't imagine Mike would not have used brass screws if they had the same sound transmission characteristics as plastic. Two thumbs up for this mute, which I use on two open back banjos.

Just received this mute a few weeks ago and have been using it off and on when the other half is home. Amazing difference having the mute in place. I can play in the next room without having to close the door or put a fan on to create some "white noise" so as not to offend her. I love the mute. Did not change the tone on my Deering but is much quieter. Also seems to be greater sustain and allows me to hear mistakes more clearly, which forces me to work on right hand technique. Overall a great product. Easy to install and appears very well made.

Thanks Mike.

As for the mute, it flat out works. I live in an apartment building with thin walls so I figured a mute was a necessity. Mike's Banjo Mute works fantastic. It really does lower the volume significantly.

Since I'm just starting out I'm going to try to avoid using this as much as possible so I can really hear what things are supposed to sound like and what I'm doing wrong. But I think that's just a credit to the mute and how well it does its job.

Fantastic purchase, don't regret it for a second.

Mike's Banjo Mute is a very nicely made mute that really quiets the banjos I've tried it on (Stelling Staghorn and Deering Goodtime). It is easier to put on the bridge than my other mute, which requires that you slide it on the bridge under the strings, often moving the bridge -- not good. Instead, Mike's banjo mute relies on two thumb screws to tighten it, so there is no undue force on the bridge and the bridge stays in place. Also, my other mute isn't quite long enough, so the first string is not muted as well as the others. Mike's Mute, on the other hand, provides very uniform muting of all 5 strings. I had a bit of trouble mounting it because the strings on the tailpiece side of the bridge converge toward the tail piece. I wrote Mike about this and got an immediate reply from him for a solution. He also responded to my original order very quickly, as i had a travel deadline to meet. Nice mute. Very effective. Contributes to "Peace on Earth" and "Good Will Toward Men".

I own two Mike's Mutes! The first one was purchased from Mike's website after reading the reviews here at tHE BHO, and the second was purchased from an individual in the BHO classifieds (it didn't fit his bridge).

I also have a Gold Tone brass mute that slips on the bridge under the strings. This mute takes a bit more care to install correctly than the Mike's Mute, and the MM quites the banjo down better. The Mike's Mute really has made me a better player - I can now practice more without offending the family. If you are looking for a mute, this is it. Very solid construction too. Thanks Mike!!

Ordered Wednesday afternoon, and had it in my hands on Saturday. I purchased the mute because I didn't want to inflict FMB and Cripple Creek for 2-3 hours a day on my long-suffering husband.

Product is very well made, and will probably last longer than me. It effectively mutes my MasterCraft down to an acceptable spousal level . Interestingly enough, it makes my 'jo sound like a guitar which is kind of neat.

I would recommend this product to anyone, and it works LOTS better than sticking clothespins on the bridge. Also, Mike was a pleasure to deal with (e-mail).

Mikes Mute is very easy to put on and produces a very clear sound. I can hear more of my mistakes, so it will force me to clean those up. Best thing is I can practice in the house again! I asked my wife if it worked and she replied "Were you playing? I didn't hear a thing." My daughter was upstairs sleeping and she didn't wake up either. Like many others by now I own one of Mike's Mutes. I paid for it on line and it came remarkably promptly to my home in Albany Western Australia.
I was a little worried that as I use a compensated bridge there might be a difficulty, not so the mute copes with it fine. Being a Toolmaker by trade I note when a thing is made well or not., this mute is well produced neat and tidy a credit to its maker.
On using it I found it does what it claims, drops the decibel level to a "family friendly" level. Of course the tone changes a bit but its made for practicing not stage performances.
One thing I have found though is that when I am trying to learn a tune by listening to a DVD and repeatedly playing it back I have to leave the mute off because one's ear is listening intently to the notes on the DVD which you are trying to match with your banjo so as you do not get the correct tone with the mute it makes it very difficult. That is a very minor concern though. One thing I have noticed is that with mikes mute on the banjo when practicing I can hear more of the mistakes I make whereas before the volume of the banjo masked them a little, that's got to be a good thing!. So thumbs up for Mikes Mute.

I first found out about Mike's Banjo Mute on BHO then went to his website and read a bit more about them and and thought thats sounds like what I need as my banjo is pretty loud, which isn't a problem until I want to do some late night practicing.

I contacted Mike via email to enqire about a mute. He was very prompt and helpful answering my questions which helped me decide to purchase a 5 string radiused mute. The mute arrived 17 days after I had mailed my order and payment to him which is quite quick seeing as I am in Australia and Mike the USA.

I tried the mute on my banjo and am pleased with it. The mute is very easy to put on and take off. It has dropped the volume from an 11 to about a 3 on the loudness scale which means I can pick for as long as I want through the evening and night without worrying about keeping anyone awake or annoying the neighbours.

Definately worthwhile getting one.

Received Mikes Banjo Mute a few weeks ago, immediate response and postage to Australia from Mike and arrived very quickly and well packaged.
The mute itself works perfectly for what I was after.
I live in the top floor of a apartment block and everything travels through the thin walls, the mute reduces the level to a point where I am now able to play using finger picks which was not a option at any part of the day without the mute.
Keeping in mind that this is a MUTE and you lose all your resonator "banjo" twang, but you get to keep the sustain which is why it works great, ending up with a more guitar type sound.
I found clamping on the bridge gives me a clean guitar sound and clamping the strings behind the bridge gives a silenced thin banjo sound.
One very happy customer.
A must have for any banjo player especially the "suburban" players.

Cheers Mike

My wife has a t-shirt that says "Paddle Faster I Hear Banjos." So, you know she's not happy when I pick up the canon I'm hitting. Mike's Banjo Mute has not only got me back into my house to practice it's an incredible mute. Excellent sustain on the strings and it really makes it even easier to play, which I still think is weird but cool. One problem I have always had is striking past the strings and hitting the head. Without the mute it's not really noticable but with the mute I notice it alot....which is good because it's helping me fine tune my picking style and the cleaner it gets the smoother and faster I'm playing. If you don't have one of these - GET ONE....simple as that.

I tend to only have time to practice late at night, which is challenging with a baby in the house. I started looking for a mute that would work on my Nechville, which has a radius neck. A quick google search brought me to Mike's page, where I found that he makes a specific radius model (demo'ed by Tom Nechville, no less).

I ordered the mute late Saturday night, and received an email from Mike on Sunday morning. I received the mute on Wednesday, and it works just as advertised. I am able to play with picks at full strength, and the tone is quite pleasant. My wife is a big fan!

The thing works! Even when I tried it with bridges is was not designed to work with.
I was able to try this out with a couple of different bridges that I found in my banjo case. I initially had on my banjo a moon bridge. As I am a relative beginner I bought the straight mute not really considering that the moon bridge is compesnated and radiused. It took a litte finagling to get in on, as well as some minor tuning adjustements because the compensation actually causes the strings behind the bridge to contact and rest on the underclamp as it goes back toward the tailpiece. Still it worked relatively well.

I then found a Grover bridge that had the bone nut inserts on them. This bridge though not compensated and radiused did not work because the the bridge was to big for the clamps to go around. It sat on the bridge half cocked but did not go on properly. For me no big woop.

I also found a regular unmarked bridge that I assumed came on the banjo originally (An eighties alvarez). Uncompensated, straight with the 1 11/16 spacing. I did find that particular spacing to still have issues with installation. By issues I mean it doesn't go on quite as smooth as Bill Evans puts it on in his youtube video. I got it on without too much trouble but the string still contacts the underclamp enough to require a little retuning. After installation it clamps on and works like promised! My wife is so happy! It truly does "promote family harmony". As a beginner you can imagine howmany times i start and stop and restart.....and stop.....throw a pick at the wall......go get it.........restart.

But the magic really happened when I got my Snuffy Smith II bridge in the mail. I got it with Crowe spacing and installation was much improved. The 1/16th of an inch makes a difference. The are no retuning issues that are created by installation although the strings do touch the underclamp a smidge. It works like a dream! I am so glad I bought this. I can practice my banjer to my hearts content while my 17 month old daughter is napping or..... when my wife goes to bed but I don't wanna cause I've not had my fill of grinnin on what I was pickin! It kinda makes the banjo sound like a harp in a way and the mute never gets in the way. This was a good use of 34 dollars.

Had I bought the radiused version I probably could have kept the moon bridge on, yet I don't know how the moon bridges compensation would interact with it. I bet it would work just fine. I may go ahead and get the radiused version and give the straight one as a gift to someone I know who could use it!

The mute gets a nine because I feel that installation should be a bit smoother even when using the 1 11/16 spacing. The Crowe spacing helps with this and I'm guessing theBaucom spacing would alleviate eveything and make this a perfect 10! 9 out of 10 is still awesome which Mike's mute certainly is!

He asked me to review his mute here on Banjo Hangout when I got it and I told him I would do that. I was impressed by the sturdy quality of the mute and surprised by how quiet his mute made my banjo. I've tried several ways to mute my banjo over the years. Mostly by taking off the resonator and stuffing my banjo with towels and rags while at the same time putting two clothes pins on my bridge. Mike's mute was even quieter than that method and quieter by a big margin. And way quieter than the Wright banjo mute that I use.

But on my c-moon bridge it wasn't as good a fit and not as quiet either. Some of my strings are louder than others and some strings sing because of the way it fits on my C shaped bridge. It is still usable, and I do still use it, but it bugs me a little.

I was concerned about the plastic nut that has the threads on it to bolt it onto the bridge. I hope the threads don't wear out. At least not too fast because the rest of the mute will last a lifetime and it looks like you can't just replace that part. I wonder if they are plastic so they can bend and fit better but I don't know. Maybe I should ask Mike.

I was looking for a solid mute because I practise late night (and as a beginner I don't sound very pretty I'm afraid). Stuffing my beloved banjo with a T-Shirt was just not good enough. Now I am more than happy with the tender, sweet tone and can even try to play with finger picks! Installation is as easy as it can get, I am VERY satisfied! Also the delivery to Austria was fast. Great service!

I was looking out for a Banjo mute and search for it in the internet. When I saw Mike's video I was very surprised on the muted sound of the Banjo Mike played. I ordered a mute. After only some days I got them. And I try it immediately on my Banjo. And I was very happy with the result. (To prevent from damage the upper ebony part of the bridge, I glued a thin layer of felt under the brass.) The sound was super again. Mike's Mute is very easy to fix and it will not move away from the bridge while playing. So I can do my day and night Banjo exercises without disturbing anyone in my neighborhood. The mute is highly recommendable. Try this mute first and it will safe your money (the double bought item is as generally known the dearly bought item).

Best regards from Germany
and happy (muted) picking.

Received here in Italy after a very loooong waiting (due to the worst Postal service / Custom of the World!) I must say I'm impressed by this mute. It works just great and it do exactly what it must do, but it do better than other mutes I've tried before. Fast and easy to attach, I use it not only to practice, but also in recording sessions where I need a kind of "dobroish" sound. 100% satisfied.

Truly wonderful and just as advertised. My only complaint is that my fingers hurt from practicing so much now that the family doesn't yell at me as soon as I start. This is the single greatest thing you can buy if you have family, roommates, or neighbors who don't appreciate your playing. Makes the banjo use its indoor voice.

I like this mute. It arrived quickly (I ordered it on a Saturday and it came the fallowing Monday). It is easy to install and does not mar the bridge. Most importantly, however, I can now practice banjo while my two-year-old sleeps upstairs (in a house with hardwood floors that seems to act like a large resonator). I am no longer resigned to practicing on a five gallon bucket out in the woods (although I’m sure I will return to this practice—it seems aesthetically appropriate for banjo practice).

I've never bought a mute before so I have no comparables, but Mike's Banjo Mute works wonderfully.

I share a house where one of the occupants sleeps during the day, so playing at full volume isn't an option for me. Mike's mute mutes my Goldstar GF-100 perfectly. It brings it down to about strong fingerpicked guitar levels, give or take (if I'm doing a strong roll). It increases the sustain of my banjo considerably, which also makes it more guitar-like.

The mute stays on easily. The construction seems top notch and it even looks nice. And... your friends will love it too! :)

I received the mute a couple of days ago and I must tell you that it exceeds my expectations. I can now frail and flail in the late hours of the evening without worrying about bothering the rest of the family. I am very pleased with the easy on - easy off function of the mute. Mutes I've tried in the past either failed to stay attached to the bridge or took three hands and 12 fingers to install. One thing I noticed....on my banjo...probably due to the depth of the notches on my bridge and the fact that I use light gauge strings.....the 1st and 5th strings seemed to be a bit louder than the other strings. It appeared that the brass piece did not make contact with the 1st and 5th strings and it did with the 2nd - 4th strings. All the strings were muted however the 1st and 5th just seemed to ring a bit more than the others......so I cut two small pieces of decorative tape and applied them to the bottom of the brass part to cushion the 1st and 5th strings just a bit..... and voilà! PERFECT!

All that said, here is the ringing endorsement.....I am so pleased with the mute that I am going to ordered another one as a gift to a friend and fellow banjo player.

I've had the mute for a few weeks now. I give it 100%.

Before I bought it I was concerned about two things - stress on the bridge caused by the weight of the mute and possible damage to the bridge when tightening up the screws putting it on and off. Neither is a problem! It's much lighter than it looks and the tightening screws are nylon so I can't over-tighten even if I wanted to.

The weird thing the difference in tone though - with the mute on, it's much quieter but it also sounds clearer. Not sure if its my ears picking up more delicate sounds now that it isn't so loud or perhaps I can pick harder/cleaner without annoying the neighbours. Well worth the $$!.

I have been playing with a F-C mute since I started picking, and I have been very happy with it. I saw the ad for Mike's mute in Angie's Silver Strings ezine, and I went to Mike's website (www.mikesbanjomute.com), checked out the videos and testimonials, and ordered one.
First off, I ordered the mute on Tuesday. I got an immediate "thank you" from Mike via email. I figured that, even if this was an autoresponder, it was a nice touch. I replied to his email and almost immediately, Mike replied back! Wow! I got the mute yesterday morning (Thursday; great shipping time!), and I tried it out last night.
I tuned my 5-string before fitting the mute, then, when I put the mute on, I checked my tuning again and WOW!! no need to retune! That was a big plus. I played for about an hour (if what I do can actually be called playing), and the mute never loosened or vibrated at all. I noticed that there was less string buzz, too.
This is a great mute. It looks good, it fits well, and I think the nylon thumbscrews (that "lift' the feet to to the bridge instead of "seating" the plate to the bridge) are a key component to making the mute maintain the actual tone of the banjo and reducing buzzing/vibration sounds.
Great product; heartily recommended! Thanks, Mike!

Ok, i was done and mounted it on my banjo, and BAM, totally silence,´i never heard my banjo whispering, but the tone was very nice. in the beginning a was not used to it, but now its completely "my sound", i even forget to dismount the mute sometimes, and i have this thing one day. i never tried any other mutes, but i wouldnt have the idea to buy anotherone instead of mikes´. i am living in a house with 12 families, and now no one complains about the volume, yesterday i played at about 1 am and no neighbour kicked at my door, GREAT!

I have been using Mike's Mute for a couple of weeks now. The device certainly does what it says on the tin, plus a bit more.

Volume is way down, however the tone and response changes dramatically in my view. The volume is somewhat louder than playing an unamplified electric guitar, but not an awful lot. The tone changes to something similar to a very quiet dobro with much increased sustain. I dont see these changes as an issue as I can play virtually whenever and wherever I want.

Apart from not annoying the neighbours, I have found another benefit. Much as I love the banjo it is as we all know a very loud instrument. After long sessions even I find the sheer volume of the banjo tiring. Being able to turn the volume way down makes extended sessions more enjoyable, and I find I have been able to extend the length of my playing sessions without personal "noise fatigue".

Finally the mute appears to be very solid and well made. Slipping it on and off is a breeze and does not seem to put my banjo out of tune.

Very glad I have found this accessory. I'll be using it a lot.

This is a wonderful product. Very easy to use and makes for very quiet practice sessions. Perfect for me when I play at 6am and my wife and two-year old are asleep - now they stay asleep! Yes, of course there are cheap alternatives, but you know what, taking off the resonator twice a day to add and remove rags gets old fast, and clothes pins on the bridge always fly off or fall onto the strings or get in the way of the picking hand, and as for sticking silly putty or others on the bridge feet and have it soak up whatever chemical gunk it's made from? - no thanks. There comes a time when you just have to do something right, and when you need a quiet banjo you need a reliable mute. This one is awesome, and it shipped same day service - wow!!

I looked around at other mutes, and ultimately decided to go with Mike's Mute. I'm so pleased with it! It cuts down the volume of my playing by about half, and mellows out some of the overtones which can cut through the many layers of my house, and make my roomates and neighbours cranky. Now I can practice to my heart's content at all hours of the day! It's also really well made, and I can tell it will last me forever. It's really easy to use, once you realize it sits behind, not ON, the bridge. Which resulted in accidental experiments in banjo distortion. whoops.
It's really quick to pop it onto the banjo as well, so no time wasted fidgeting and adjusting.
I also like that I'm supporting an independent business rather than some bigger company that really doesn't need my $.

The mute is well made and the polished brass looks very nice. I have a compensated bridge (as opposed to straight), so I selected this mute because it works on a curvy bridge, and because of the good reviews I have read. The volume is reduced dramatically, and the tone is very good. It doesn't sound like a banjo (not a problem to me), but the pitch of the strings is clear and that is critical so you know you are fingering and picking correctly. I have over 4mm of bridge curvature and the mute works fine. It also does not get in the way of my right hand.
The only 2 issues I have are that the sides of the mute rub significantly on the outside strings when I install or remove the mute, and that I can't leave the mute installed when I put it in the case because it could put pressure on the mute/bridge/head when the lid is closed. This is a very good product.

I purchased his mute from Hong Kong through his website. He mailed it on the same day as my order and informed me by e-mail. Great respose! Only 8 days to be delivered to me in Hong Kong by international mail. Packing was perfect. Kindly international mail cost was inclusive in the price. In his e-mail, he recommended me to join the member of BHO. Now, I am one of the members here. I have tried other mutes and other ways before. But, his mute is the best quality with reasonable price. Highly recommended. Thank you very much, Mike!

I have played the banjo now for 6 months, and even though I have enjoyed every second of picking and playing with this fine instrument, my wife and children see it from a sligthly different perspective. I recieved my banjo mute yesterday and I am very impressed! What's even more important: so is my family!! When I play now, I don't hear that whining noise and slamming of doors in the background I used to hear everytime I picked the strings. I am a happy customer indeed!

I have tried two mutes: a generic made-in-China thing called Gold-something (maybe "Golden Gate") and Mike's Banjo Mute. Mike's is by far superior and well worth the cost ($34). The M-i-C mute was this shiny, toothed piece of miniature pig-iron that you somehow had to strap onto your bridge (I used a couple of rubber bands, and it looked pretty Dogpatch-ish). It worked, but just barely, and risked real rattle with the strings. It also made the banjo sound more like a low-volume guitar.

Mike's is a piece of art in comparison; beautifully finished brass with two nylon screws to attach to the bridge. Nylon so that the stresses are less, I guess, and less chance of scratching. Works very well - lower profile than the pig-iron, so your picking hand has a more natural orientation. No rattle, and easily installed or removed. Reduces the volume, probably, by 50% or so, and it still sounds pretty much like a banjo.

This is the first mute that I have ever purchased. I doubt that I'll ever need to buy another one. This mute works great and is just as the others have described it: perfect! It reduces the volume of the banjo by more than 50% and makes it slightly quieter than a guitar. MY WIFE LOVES IT! The tonal quality is very good and it is very easy to put on and take off. If you need to reduce the volume of the banjo due to living in an apartment or if you have kids that go to bed early, this is the perfect accessory for you. In fact, I may now take my banjo with me when I am working out of town and staying in a motel. It is well made, well thought out, and cheap! Get one!

I just gotta say this little gadget works perfectly and gives the banjo a fantastic sound as well! It adds loads to the sustain and gives a bright, metallic tone. It even comes in a cool little pouch which you can keep your picks in. I'm a sucker for nicely machined bits of brass so I probably would have bought one even if I didn't have a banjo.

I bought this due to moving into an apartment while we are having a house built. It is just what I needed, as I can play as I normally would and not disturb the neighbors. I had a Fielding-Cutler mute a couple of years ago, but sold it due to having to alter my hand position. I was concerned about Mike's Mute having the same problem, but it is not the case. This mute is well built and Mike was very quick communicating via email. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a quality mute.

Great mute!!! I owned another kind that I didn't like much and lost it, which was fine as I rarely used it. That led me to search the "Hangout" forums for a better mute, which led me to Mike's. It was shipped promptly, easy to attach and remove and doesn't kill the tone. I often practice my guitar chops by playing an unplugged electric guitar. Now I do the same with my banjo. I still hear the notes clearly without the volume and the power associated with our beloved instrument. I actually sit and practice rolls and songs in the same room while watching TV with my son or I can play while the family sleeps. As many have said a marriage-saver/whine-stopper.

Mike Stidd's banjo mute arrived yesterday. My wife is smiling and the dog is out from under the couch. Tried it on my Gibson-Alvarez resonator which ordinarily has the volume of a .50 cal machine gun and this morning my neighbor two houses down asked me if I'd given my banjo away. Simple to use. Muffles the sound but preserves enough tonal quality to keep my ear in touch with what my fingers are doing. Thanks, Mike!

The mute is a spiffy looking brass and with an aluminum bar with two “feet” underneath and two brass thumbscrews on top. After two minutes turning it this way and that over the bridge (I’m not good at this kind of stuff) I figured it out and installed it. I’d read reviews of this mute but I wasn’t really prepared for the low, sweet sound the banjo has with it on. The mute doesn’t compromise the instrument at all, just gives a different sound that I like as much as the banjo unmuted. Now when I’m visiting my new grandson I can play the banjo without waking him and maybe even put him to sleep with its new quiet, dulcet tone. Highly recommended!

This is one SUPERIOR banjo mute...Mike's service is exemplary and only 72 hours from order to delivery!!!

'Mike's mute' performs WAY better than anything I have used to date! A small, sueded-leather storage pouch (included) allows the mute to be secured to your banjo for ready-use, if so-desired.

I tried my new 'Mike's mute' on both my Gibson Retro 4 and Stelling Red Fox banjos and was eminently pleased with its ease of use and moreover...with its PERFORMANCE!

Having very recently obtained and used this product...IMO, it is its combination of attributes...supreme ease of installation and removal, COMBINED with its effectiveness in muting the banjo...which places 'Mike's Mute' in its own class as a superior...(and nearly indispensible), banjo accessory.

Awesome! I'm a banjo newbie living in a house where sound travels. That meant no practicing after my wife and son are asleep. One of my banjo teacher's other students turned me onto Mike's Mute so I bought one, site unseen (or, rather, unheard) and I'm glad I did.

The banjo is much quieter now, though not at all muffled. If anything there is even more sustain with the mute on. I don't understand the mechanics of how it works, but it does. I can now pick away at all hours of the night without bothering anybody. I've taken to leaving the mute on most of the time while practicing so I don't have to worry about the rest of my family hearing Cripple Creek over and over and over again.

Customer service has also been awesome. I lost one of the thumbscrews (I blame my son...) and Mike was quick to make sure I got a replacement.

Go buy Mike's Mute. Your family will thank you.

I just got Mike's mute in the mail. Right away I felt good about it when I put it on the banjo. It gave the banjo a sweet tone, reduce the sound by about 50% and didn't change the intonation. I had recently tried the GoldTone mute and after about half an hour I was ready to throw it away. But Mike's mute was fine in all the ways that the Gold Tone mute was bad. I'm happy with my purchase. I never tried the Fielding mute so I can't compare Mike's mute to that product.

Wonderful! Much quieter than I expected from other things I read when I did a mute search here on BHO. Pitch still sounded good to me also, of course my ear is still being trained. Very, very easy to install, good thing since there were no instructions included but I read about it on his web site. Definite ***** five stars, of course I haven't tried any other "real" mutes, just the old shirt in the pot and some paper towels up under the strings next to the bridge. One thing i did notice, I guess I tend to keep my hand a bit flat or at least low to the bridge so if i got close to the bridge I could feel the mute on the heel of my hand occasionally. That might be a good thing and make me put more arch in my wrist.

17 July 2009
OK, I've used this for a couple days now and I am not as enamored as I was at first. It works great at muting the banjo but I am finding it gets in the way. I've read this about another mute that goes on the bridge and now have experienced it first hand. My wrist/palm base tend to be fairly close to the bridge, perhaps I should work on getting more of a bend in my wrist. I find that with the mute on I have to move more to the Y position to keep the mute from interfering with my hand. Not a big deal but I don't think it's a good thing to practice routinely instead of having your hand back in the X position where I normally play.

Just got the mute today and tried it out. I already love it. It gives the banjo a soft sweet sound with nice sustain that is already helping me focus on the music better - without the usual noise and reverberation.

I didn't know that my banjo's volume was actually distracting me a bit from hearing what I was playing, but the mute helps me focus better on the chords and melody -- a benefit I hadn't anticipated. And when I remove it, it's as if my ear can now discern the effects of the strings versus the resonator -- subtle, but I like it.

I got the mute as a "marriage saver," but I think its going to help me develop as a player, too. My wife, who hates bluegrass, had no comment, but I think she'll appreciate it over time ;) The noise reduction is dramatic.

I did notice a little buzzing on my fourth string, but nothing that distracts me too much. The benefits far outweigh this small aspect.

Also, Mike was very helpful over both phone and e-mail - great service.

I have had a Fielding-Cutler mute for a couple of years and bought one of Mike's Mutes a few months ago after reading about it in BNL. I prefer the Mike's Mute to the F-C. It does not have a metallic sound like the F-C does, but instead has a much sweeter tone, sounding a lot like a lute. I had a problem with the F-C mute causing a string buzz at times but I never could figure out exactly what the problem was. My wife comments a lot on how pretty the tone of my banjo is with the Mike's Mute on it. It really does quiet it down a lot and late at night, I almost put myself to sleep playing it. If you want a great sounding mute that really works, get one of these.

I was also very pleased with how easy the mute was to install on my banjo. It took just a couple of seconds. The mute worked as advertised. It cut the noise level down by at least half. I call it "noise" and not "sound" because I am new to the banjo, and I am just starting the learning curve. My girlfriend already is thankful for the mute as much as I am. I believe that the mute will help me practice on a daily basis without being relegated to the doghouse. Thank you Mike for a superior product.

I bought this primarily for the sound reduction, so I could practise more quietly (Vs some people's focus on tone) and it IS stunningly quiet. I've tried other mutes, and so far this is undoubtedly the best. As I said, tone wasn't the main thing for me, but the mute certainly does produce a pleasant tone to boot.

I do have one problem in that I had string buzzing on the 4th string when fretted 1-4. Not sure if this is a problem with the bridge or with the mute.

Despite this I still feel so positive toward this product that I would definitely buy a spare.

Anyway, my two kids are sound asleep after an hour's worth of playing in the basement so I have to say that it did exactly what I wanted it to do- mute the banjo. But it still has a really nice sound to it. I used tape on the bridge and stuffed a rag in the back but this was a whole lot better. Very fast shipping. Definitely would recommend.

Two things about this mute are amazing. First, how much it reduces the volume of the banjo. I play a Deering Sierra that is fairly loud, my wife cannot hear me from the next room with the mute on. Second, how well the banjo retains it's tone with the mute on. I now sound just as bad with the mute on as I do with it off. You can pick at full force and not endanger your marriage (or health).

Ordered on Tuesday, rec'd on Friday in the mail. Comes in a drawstring pouch. Very simple design of two parts: a flat brass bar that sits on top of the strings at the bridge, and an aluminum L-shaped bracket that slips through the holes in the bridge, and with the help of 2 nylon screws and 2 brass finger tightening nuts (I call them ball nuts as they are shaped like a ball to allow tightening with fingers)., holds the brass bar down tight on the strings. Very easy and simple to put on and take off. Takes about 5 seconds, on or off.

The best, and most surprising, aspect is the tone with the mute on. The loudness is dampened by a factor of 10, but the tonal qualities are still there. Songs sound excellent.

Great job Mike! I will buy another should I lose this one. Worth more than the $34 cost. Highly recommend it. Rich

It is not a muted sound though which is good. My banjo keeps its tone and the notes ring out, nice and clear but just at a greatly reduced volume. Since I am new to the banjo I only know how to pick loud. I have a Goodtime Special Classic Resonator and it is great to be able to practice without bothering anyone in the house. I highly recommend this product. Before I purchased the mute I was banned to another room to practice. Thanks Mike.

Very very nice! Hands down the best mute around and I've tried at least three others over the years. Each had issues and problems but this one is just perfect!
So easy to put on and take of and does the job.

This is one incredible mute. It is the best there is including tone and ergnomics!

Finally a mute that fits the bridge quickly, easily and most importantly very securely!

No more vibrating off and the little case included is functional and much appreciated.

Mike, this model could make you a banjo players best friend world wide.

Many thanks from Canada,

Yours in Bluegrass,

Ron.

When I ordered this I quickly got a response from Mike confirming my order had been received and that it would ship the next day. This thing is great, not just for practicing when others are around, but because the normal volume of my banjo is very loud and it bothers my ears to practice for long periods of time. The mute is well made, easy to use, and it comes with a little drawstring pouch to keep it in so you don't have metal bouncing around in your banjo case. The mute can reduce the sound of my banjo to something similar to an electric guitar that isn't plugged in. This is the best money I've spent since my first 'How to Play Banjo' book. Now, does anyone want to buy this clothespin and a rubber band I'm not using any more? ;-)

Mike's Mute is great for those of us who live in apartments or condos. It is easy to use, doesn't get in the way, and my banjo still has a nice sound when it is on. Great product, great service.

Slightly easier to fit than the Fielding-Cutler, and sounds a little better when installed. There are some rough edges on the aluminium bracket, though, and the nylon bolts may not survive heavy use.

I have tried several mutes including the Gold Tone and F-C mute. Mike's mute is far and away the best mute I have used in terms of maintaining a tone closest to a banjo and with no buzzing. I agree with everything that was said in the review in this month's Banjo Newsletter. I live in an apartment building in NYC, so a mute is a necessity for playing late at night. Also, Mike Stidd was great to deal with and I received the mute very quickly after I ordered it.

I received this in two days from time of order and it is fantastic. The mute goes on and off easily and provides a quiet but nice tone to my banjo when in use. I can't imagine any other mute working better.

This is an excellent banjo mute! I read the review of Mike's Mute in the June 2008 Banjo Newsletter which was very favorable. First of all, it mutes the banjo! I hear a pleasant but soft, quiet sound. It definately would allow one to play in one room without disturbing anyone in the next room. It's certainly worth the $30. A quality article. You can find Mike's Mute in the BHO classifieds.

I ordered one of these mutes from Mike after becoming frustrated with my first mute which was hard to get on and off without moving the bridge. The mute was shipped promptly and I received it within a week of my order. I am very pleased with this mute as it quiets the banjo nicely and produces a pleasing tone that actually sounds like my banjo. I live in an condo complex and this mute helps me to avoid disturbing the neighbors with my playing all of the time. Highly recommended if you are looking for a banjo mute.

After futzing with a Gold Tone banjo mute for a few weeks and wanting to see if there was an easier-to-use, more effective, and better sounding banjo mute out there, I decided this weekend to try one of Mike's Mutes (here on the BHO at http://www.banjohangout.org/classif...asp?cid=3113).

I ordered it on Sunday and received it, via USPS first class the following Wednesday. It's a great product - it's easy to install, easy to remove, and doesn't damage the bridge or change its position (unlike the Gold Tone). Most importantly, it really, really mutes the volume of the banjo to where you can't hear it outside of the room you're in. Comparatively speaking, it mutes it to below the level of a fingerpicked guitar; a normal conversation is louder. Tonally, it's very nice. Whereas the Gold Tone sounds really harsh and buzzy, Mike's makes the banjo sound something like a very quiet harpsichord. I got it to preserve domestic harmony, but I like its sound well enough that I'll probably use it even when nobody's around. Definitely worth the money, and Mike was as fast on shipping it as could be without flying here from Utah to hand-deliver it.

I've tried this one, Mike's Mute, the Gold Tone mute and the Fielding-Cutler mute. The F-C mutes the most but its sound is a bit like a harp or a dulcimer. The Gold Tone mute slides onto the bridge, and taking it on and off actually moved my bridge - not good. Mike's Mute mutes well, goes on and off easily, and the resultant sound is nice (a bit like a guitar). It's pretty too. Definitely my first choice.

Picked up this sweet little mute as an "aniversary gift" for my wife...These are very similar to the Gold Tone style mutes but cost about HALF as much. These mutes REALLY deaden/dampen the sound, almost end up with a guitar like quality, but very pleasant. Very easy install/remove and even look pretty stylish. I always prefer to hear the banjo "ring", but this excellent mute lets me increase available practice time, play with different sounds, and preserve domestic harmony. Mike was excellent to deal with as well, shipped it really fast. I had my mute in about two days. Recommended!
