The Carolina Chocolate Drops - Rhiannon Giddens, Dom Flemons, and Justin Robinson - are a multi-instrumental group of trained musicians who between them play four & five string banjo, fiddles, guitar, and autoharp, plus assorted other instruments. Their roots are in the Black stringband tradition of the Piedmont area, and while they are heavily influenced by this, they have a 21st century take on the music, and include several contemporary songs on the album (including one by Tom Waits). The title track, Snowden's Jig, first transcribed around 1850, is a mesmerising, timeless and haunting fiddle tune. Live performances by the band are full of energy and get great reviews. This is music with the bark still on.

Overall Rating: 10
