This is an album well worth giving a listen if you would like to experience a different form of bluegrass, or acoustic country music. Paul Kelly has been Australias' finest songwriter for more than 20 years (in my opinion) first with a rock band, then solo and with a small ensemble, and on this 2005 album some of Australias' finest bluegrass musicians.
Of course the songs are outstanding; with Kelly one expects nothing less - "Rally Round The Drum" is a ode to the tent boxers, "Ghost Town" a poignant tale of memories of a lost child, and "Don't Stand So Close To The Window" a kind of bluegrass waltz about an illicit affair...
The songs are treated sympathetically - this is a very intimate album. The banjo playing of Ian Simpson is tasteful and does not push itself further forward than it has to, to help the song.
Get hold of a copy (or for a sample look on Youtube for a fine performance of "Rally Round The drum" and open your ears to bluegrass that comes from a different place....
