Deering  deering vega woodsong campfire longneck Banjo Reviews

Submitted by john bange (see all reviews from this person) on 9/26/2012

Where Purchased: Intermountain Banjo

Year Purchased: 2012
Price Paid: 950 ($US)

Sound

just like my Little Wonder long neck...loud and bright with fishing line...maybe too bright with the black head...thinking about changing to white frosted

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

my setup score is based on how easy this banjo is to set up with nylon strings.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

the fit and finish is top notch. I am a huge Deering fan and this one does not disappoint. I changed out the Gold painted hardware for nickel. I just don't care for it though it is done very well...got a tension rim from Deering at a very good price...nice folks!

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

while this is my back up banjo, it is only so because of string breakage. these banjos are rock solid and dependable, light weight and loud

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

lifetime warranty and very friendly folks on the phone...never needed to get one repaired

Customer Service: 10

Components

the tuners are as good as they come but I prefer Rotomatics so I replaced them. the tailpiece is top notch but unsuitable for nylon strings (not to mention that it was painted gold) and I went to a kerschner...rims, hooks, nuts all top drawer

Components Rating: 10

Overall Comments

these light weight long neck banjos are the best out there...beautiful wood, well finished sharp cuts and angles without tons of shiney clear coat to cover up the nato wood...came in an excellent case

Where Purchased: 12th fret Toronto Canada

Year Purchased: 2009
Price Paid: 1500 (Canadian) historic exchange rates / currency converter

Sound

This banjo is versitile.I use it for bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, folk and oldtime.Just had my first practice with strings, guitars, vocals, and it sounds and plays fantastic. The open "E" tuning has a deep rich growl thats loud and snappy.I can make it cut through a crowd or back off and blend in with a sweet bassy voice. It capo's up effortlessly to deliver higher, accurate tones. The only problem I have is fitting it into the very nice hardshell case it came with, but the foam is already reshaping to fit the banjo.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

The guys at the 12th fret are expert setup men, especially Grant their banjo specialist. He set up the action to suit me,installed the 5th string spikes and installed the strap to balance the neck heavy feel of the long neck.I can capo to any key and don't need to re-tune at all. There is nothing I need to do but play it and change strings .

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

It's a great looking rig.The finish and quality of all the materials is first rate. The mahogany neck is smooth and flawless and fits naturally to my hand. This is my first Deering, and I am impressed.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

I haven't had it long enough to rate it yet,but it looks and feels solid and durable. If it was stolen I would have to get another just like this one. I could play most of my stuff with this banjo, but it won't replace my Gold Star 1952 Bow Tie.

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

I have no experience with the company so I can't say.The store I bought it at will take care of any problems and get parts if necessary.

Customer Service: not rated

Components

Overall the Quality is great.I'll see how it stands up over time.
