CloverLick  Foxville Banjo Reviews

Submitted by Jlynnaquila (see all reviews from this person) on 3/7/2014

Where Purchased: Cloverlick Banjo Shop

Year Purchased: 2013
Price Paid: 2200 ($US)

Sound

I play West Virginia style clawhammer. This banjo siiiings, I've had two previous banjos, a Deering Goodtime, and an open-back Goldtone, and although I was hoping to have a banjo in each tuning to avoid so much retuning, they are both covered in dust. Mine is a custom build with a wooden tone ring, so its quiter than most of his builds, but this is perfect for me because I sing a lot. It has an incredibly full sound.

Setup

I haven't had to change a thing on the set-up of the thing. The action is high(perfect for West Viginia clawhammer)

Appearance

The way I would decribe the craftmanship and appearance of my banjo is finished. Its just finished down to every detail. Every piece of hardware is solid, perfectly placed. Every fret is perfectly smooth. Every join is flush and perfect. The actual finish on the thing is minimalist- not too shined up, matte. I just went with his basic for the inlays, his signiture clover, the foxville inlay, and a West Virginia river company coin at the 12th fret. Very cool. Very simple.

Reliability

Jeff's hardware is probably one of his biggest assets when building. They don't come from China. They're solid. I went with nickel on the frets because its my work instrument.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

The company (Jeff Kramer) is incredibly personable. I had the chance to meet with him in person for custom fitting and mini-lesson jam. I haven't had to send it back for repairs or adjustments, but I'm very confident that he stand behind his product.

Components

The standout parts are: First, the hardware. There's none of that weird extra ringing business that you get with cheaply made hardward. His is the best. The only thing I might have worked on is the tuning pegs. The screws tend to loosen. I think those little rubber pieces that go between the headstock and the peg are in order.

Overall Comments

Because of unusual circumstances, I waited for this banjo for a long time. And it was worth every day of waiting and every penny. She (Mave) is beautiful, and a trusty companion at home and on the road. Her look, weight in my lap, and most of all her steady, full voice have changed my relationship with the banjo in general. I look forward to practicing for the first time in my life!

Sound

Simply stated, my CloverLick banjo's sound is unique and amazing.
Before aquiring it, I spent about a year playing and carefully listening to a bunch of different banjos from cheapo no names to a Deering Goodtime to two Gold Tones (White Ladye and Bob Carlin), to Reiter, OME, Enoch, and others. In my honest and humble opinion, none sound as Pure, Clean, Rich, and Warm as the CloverLick.

Setup

In addition to my CloverLick's unparalleled sound, I really appreciate its playability, which I recognized as soon as I slung its strap over my shoulder. It just felt right on. Perfectly comfortable. I especially like the wide neck, which allows plenty of space for my big, clumsy hands to manipulate the strings I want without bumping into strings I don't want to touch. And the first and fourth strings are far enough away from the edges of the neck so they don't come off the fingerboard when I push and pull on them. Another huge plus for me is the extra space (compared to all the other banjos i tried) between the strings and the head, which leaves plenty of room for my thumb to get in behind the fifth string. I haven't made any setup changes and don't plan to. Everything is just right for me.

Appearance

The banjo's appearance is extremely sharp in a subtle, un-flashy sort of way that suits me and my personality fine. At first glance, the super high quality workmanship probably wouldn't catch your eye. On closer examination though, the builder's great talent and attention to detail will be obvious.

Reliability

I've complete confidence in my banjo's reliability and durability. I'm selling all of my backup banjos. Plainly said, the CloverLick is sturdy. Seems likely it'll outlast me.

Customer Service

Mr. Kramer's personal service during my banjo buying experience was second to none. I've purchased a lot of stuff in my life and never have I been treated so well. The banjo came with two warranties. First there's a 30-day 'no risk' kind. If I was not completely satisfied with the banjo, I was encouraged to return it within 30 days for a full purchase price refund. There's also a five-year guarantee against defects in materials, workmanship, and parts. Based on my experience with Mr. Kramer and CloverLick Banjos, I'm sure that, in the unlikely event I need to use the 5-year warranty, there'd be absolutely no customer service problems.
