Where Purchased: Banjo Supply

Year Purchased: 2004
Price Paid: 629 ($US) (bought USED)

Great archtop sound.

Sound Rating: 9

First Quality top frosted head, Sosabee Cotton Mill Bridge, JLS 180 light gauge strings. First Quality archtop pot assembly with 40 hole ring. Presto tailpiece. Truss rod kept loose. Waverly V2 tuners. The banjo was setup poorly when received by me. It took some doing, but when setup better, it sounded great!

Looks very nice.

It's lasted about 20 years so far, despite tinkering by previous owners.

I replaced the plastic nut with a bone nut, which substantially improved the sound. The neck is very nicely done, given the reasonable price of this instrument. The original multi ply neck was typical for this era banjo, but the newer 3 ply neck works great. The tuners were replaced with Waverly V2 tuners at some point. They work well.

Overall Comments

This is basically a Gold Star GF-100 Hearts & Flowers mahogany neck on an upgraded 3 ply maple pot assembly, with the original mahogany resonator. I love the playability of this neck, which had been repaired after a split heel at the glue joint, but it sounds great, even though the cosmetics of the heel repair could have been done better. I purchased this at a reasonable price and knew the neck had been repaired, but also that the other components had been upgraded too. Overall, a good banjo for the money.
