Hohner  HOB200  Banjo Reviews

Submitted by clawfootcurt (see all reviews from this person) on 4/22/2009

Where Purchased: Golden Ring Music

Year Purchased: 2006
Price Paid: 500.00 ($US)

Sound

This banjo sounds like many high end open-backs that I have played. I was shocked to find out that many of the Lee, Orpheum, Reiter, and a Rickard Tubaphone banjo had similar tones to my Hohner. Until last weekend, and a trip to Zepp's, I had not played a banjo that sounded as nice as this one.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Setup was good. It is very playable.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

The wood is very nice but plain. No laminations or marquetry. The finish is also very nice. There is a nice binding along the fret board. The fret board is made of rosewood, and is nicely done, but the "pearloid" inlays are a little cheesy. There are side marker dots. The frets are dressed VERY nicely. The hardware is plated well, but the hooks could be a bit shorter, as the threads sometimes catch on my clothing. The tailpiece is nice and heavy also. There is a nice abalone inlay in the headstock. The inlays in the fretboard are really the only drawback to the appearance, and that is only noticeable very close up. I would imagine someone could take the jo into a luthier and get real mother of pearl put in if it bothered that much.

Reliability

This banjo is nice and heavy feeling. The neck feels beefy in my hands compared to some others I have held. One of the tuning keys has cracked the other month and that was dis-heartening, but I still have not had to replace it. Yes, I don't think this banjo has any reliability problems.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Fritz and Mary at Golden Ring Music in Manitowoc, WI are terrific people. I have been very satisfied with their service.

Components

The finish on the wood looks great. The frets are dressed very nicely. Interestingly, I cannot find any published info on this, but the banjo has a rolled brass tone ring and therefore is not easily drowned out when playing with others. It also has a very nice warm tone without sounding muffled. I only give it a 9 because the inlays look a little plastic.

Overall Comments

I felt like a fool seeing that one guy only paid $249 for this banjo, but after owning it for a while now, and getting to play some others, I can't believe that I stumbled onto such a great banjo. This instrument is affordable, playable, and sounds great, and for the most part, looks great. I would compare the sound of this banjo to some of the better open backs with prices up to $3000.00.

Components

Great components - the tuners are sweet. As good or better than the higher rated and more expensive banjos I've owned. No need to mention them because they're great too and I'm not interested in putting them down.

Year Purchased: 2005
Price Paid: 249.00 ($US)

Sound

The instrument has an excellent tone. Rich full sound with lots of sustain. Excellent volume for an open back banjo. Sounds better than some of the more popular brands and expensive banjos on the market that I tried. Very impressed with the overall sound of this banjo.

Sound Rating: 9

Setup

The banjo needed the bridge and tailpiece bolt installed. I was able to do that with ease. I noticed that the bridge grooves were not cut deep enough causing the 1st and 2nd strings to slip out of position. I took it to a local banjo shop where the technician cut the grooves to the correct depth. He also adjusted the string height (a little lower) by cutting the grooves in the nut a little deeper. He was impressed with the sound since he was used to working on much more expensive instruments. He only charged me $5 and now the banjo plays like a charm.

Setup Rating: 7

Appearance

Excellent finish and the fiber head looks great. No flaws to report. The wood quality (maple rim) is excellent. The inlay from the head stock down the neck is just excellent. A super nice appearing banjo.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

This appears to be a very sturdy instrument with very good quality hardware. I like the planetary tuners and the nice tailpiece. This banjo is one that has lasting quality and I would consider a real keeper. I know that I can depend on this unit and would not need a backup instrument on a gig.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

When I had the problem with the bridge I was told that I could return the instrument for exchange, but their inventory was low. They said I could also take it to the local warranty center if one was available in my town or to a local repair shop and they would credit me up to $25 for the repairs. After the instrument was repaired I told them the repair was $5 and it cost me about $5 in gas for the round trip so they told me there was no problem. They happily credited me $10 on the purchase. Music123.com treated me very fairly which I greatly appreciate.

Components

All components are high quality. No upgrading needed on this instrument.

Overall Comments

This banjo originally sold for $558.00. I bought it on a close out since the item was being discontinued by the manufacturer. I only paid $249.00 during the Christmas shopping season and am glad I bought it. I love this banjo because it is exactly what I wanted. I got a great sounding and easy playing open back banjo with that old timey banjo sound. Excellent quality and durability without needing any upgrading. All I have to do is play it. Compared to some of the more popular brands and higher priced banjos I have to say I got a better deal on this Hohner HOB200. I tested a few of the others at a local shop and all I can say is that they could not compare to this banjo.

Where Purchased: Dr.Cluck's online

Year Purchased: 2005
Price Paid: 404.00 ($US)

Sound

Drop shipped directly from Hohner since the seller didn't have it in stock. Had to set it up on my own, no problem. For the price paid, excellent sound. Rich, bright, and loud. Decent "old time" banjo for the price.

Sound Rating: 9

Setup

Had to set it up myself, but once the bridge was installed, the action was perfect right out of the box. Tuning peg tension, tail piece, and brackets all had to be tightened.

Setup Rating: 1

Appearance

This is a really pretty banjo. Wonderful inlay on the headstock and fretboard. Finish is excellent, without flaws.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

Seems to be pretty heavy duty for a relatively inexpensive banjo. I have no doubt I could depend on it on a gig without backup.

Reliability Rating: 9

Customer Service

The initial purchase, shipping, and price were a great experience. I have only had it for a week, so otherwise, I haven't had to deal with either the seller or Hohner directly.

Customer Service: not rated

Components

I really like the fiberskin head, and an actual armrest on an open back banjo!

Overall Comments

As with my previous review of my Saga SS-10, this is a very nice banjo for the money (sort of quoted on Elderly's website).
