Janish  Picker  Banjo Reviews

Submitted by Tom-B (see all reviews from this person) on 3/30/2007

Where Purchased: Janet Davis Music

Year Purchased: 2006
Price Paid: 4,000 ($US)

Sound

I play a variety of styles melodic, bluegrass, up- picking - none too well though - but I find the Janish good for all of them.
EAsy action.Nice base string and sweet sounding up the neck.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

It was well set up by JMD but I have added a customised Fults tailpiece as I like the solid fitting it gives and AMB cryogenic strings

Setup Rating: 9

Appearance

It is easily the most beautiful banjo I have ever seen. The colours in the inlays positively sparkle. The contrast between the anthracite and gold is striking and the engraving of the metal rim etc always draws admiring comments.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

The finish and workmanship are outstanding and I am sure it will last for generations.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

The warranty is life for workmanship. I haven't requred anything done but the maker Pavel Janish in the Czech Republic responds prompty and helpfully to general enquiry emails.

Components

It sounds great but there is no doubt the standout quality is its appearance. It truly is stunning to look at. Even my wife's friends don't demur at the cost when they look at the workmanship.

Components Rating: 10

Overall Comments

It is expensive but it is a work of art as well as an instrument that holds its own very well against the other banjos (Gibsons, Stellings etc) of those I jam with. I thoroughly recommend it and would have no hesitation in buying another. I will be keeping it. Naturally though if I buy an additional banjo I might go for a contrast like a Nechville.

Sound

It's loud enough, bright enough and there's a lovely distinction between X and Y positions and points in between. It cracks when ya need it too and nobly backs up the softest of flatpickers .

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Well set up . Just tightened the head after having it for just over a month and she's sounding great. Slightly altered the truss rod to give the neck a bit more bow after swapping in a kateyz bridge.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

It's a maple with a sunburst finish. Beautiful, original abalone inlays. A bit too much filler around them, but it has been absolutely painstakingly finished and detailed. Superb craftsmanship. I ordered contrasting wooden purfling. Lovely to look at.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

Rock Solid and dependable. Just used it at a monthly celtic/bluegrass session we do. 3 straight hours of playing and no signs of weariness. Getting up at 6 to play before the family wakes up is easy knowing that The Picker is waiting for me.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

He was dead helpful and friendly and very honest. Don't know about the warranty. Never occured to me...but I feel supremely confident that if any problem WERE to arise, Pavel would be brilliant in sorting it out.

Components

No weak anything. The overall finish and look of the banjo is definitely stunning. And, besides the filler issue, his inlays are not copies of anything I've seen b/c they're his designs, from what I understand.
I thought the Sierra had a slender neck, but this neck is even slimmer and an absolute joy to hold. Playing it is effortless.

Overall Comments

I own a Sierra and am about to sell my CC100R - both great banjos. I was looking for the banjo to get old with and I've found it. I feel good knowing I've supported a lesser-known luthier who does excellent work and I have an instrument that I ITCH to play. I feel lucky to own a banjo as nice as this. Pavel Janish knows what he is doing. I'm very happy indeed.

Sound

I play bluegrass with my Janish.I like it a lot, very satisfied.Have had many compliments on its looks and sound.Workmanship is very good. This brand is virtually unheard of in the U.S. It was made in the Czech Republic in April of '98.Please email me if you'd like the website for Janish musical instruments.

This banjo is a Gibson copy.It was well setup, though I did have to tighten the head, but it traveled halfway across the world,I rather expected that.

Only problem I had was the 5th string nut was not quite deep enough, just needed filed down a slight bit to keep the string from popping out when I picked it really hard.
