Overall Comments

I would say this is a great starter banjo. I would like the neck to be a bit wider but I think that has more to do with my Phat Phingers :)

Where Purchased: Kennelly Keys Music Inc, Lynnwood, WA

Year Purchased: 2005
Price Paid: 250 ($US)

Sound

Sounds good for range, appropriate for the price, poor handling (i.e. cardboard box) and lack of proper setup (limited music store experience with instrument).

Sound Rating: 8

Setup

Was not setup when I bought it, it came in a real poor quality box (probably expected for the price tag). One of the screws for the resonator was broken when I bought it and needed to be reglued under warranty. It's possible there was a rental issue here since this was the instrument up for rental before I decided to buy it. I think I would have been the first to rent it though, and there was no obvious issues except for the resonator screw on the instrument.

For the money without a tone ring, I feel this is an excellent value for the money. I actually was looking to rent an instrument (this was the rental). Since it was relatively the same price within 6 mo to buy I bought.

Setup was relatively easy, but it was tougher since I was a rookie making the changes.

Setup Rating: 5

Appearance

Very nice looking for the price. Plain in the neck etchings, but has a very nice finish which leads to easier play on the neck and fret board.

Actually received compliments from others that recognized it was a nice look for the price range.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

As I mentioned out of the box I had an issue with the resonator screw not being properly screwed down.

I also ended up replacing the 5th string tuner($40) because it just couldn't hold a note.

Reliability Rating: 6

Customer Service

Never tried the manufacturer, but the local music store serviced without incident.

Components

5th string tuner definately you'll want replaced.

The bridge had some strange behaviors after pulling off the mute on it, actually in the positive direction. I suspect if I stayed with this banjo I would explore replacing this piece and trying different bridges I think they might make a sound difference.

All said these are minor upgrades which would keep you going longer on ths instrument in the, this is fine until I can afford to upgrade state.

Excellent entry level banjo; I would say worth spending the extra money and stepping up from the absolute bottom (100+ range) for this banjo. It will last you though the "not sure if I'm going to stick with this instrument" phase until you can upgrade to the next level. Also a good not to worried if it got ripped off events, nice backup banjo.
