Sound

I love it the sound was better than I expected. My instructor said that it has
Got the brightest and best sound that he has heard come from a banjo and he's
Been teaching 40 years. I considered buying a 7 or 8 thousand $ banjo. I'm so
Happy with ob 250 arch top. Thanks go to Mr Ross!

Sound

It suits my 3 finger picking well. Nice lows, bright highs, good volume. I prefer it to the plain OB250. More character to the sound.

Sound Rating: 9

Setup

Switched to a Fuller Sohem Bridge, I keep action relatively low, and use less head tension than flat top OB250. It came with a bottom frosted head, which I have since switched to a top frosted 5 Star head, otherwise stock. Nice feel to neck. Sure does sound good! Moon light bridges work well on this too. I am disappointed in the factory mounting of the neck too low on the pot creating marginal clearance between the strings and head near the archtop ring.

Setup Rating: 8

Appearance

Looks good. Gold plating and engraved armrest is an eye catcher. Original translucent head showed off gold tone ring. Nice finish. I receive a lot of compliments on both the looks and sound of this banjo. The fretboard is developing a nice patina over time.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

Very reliable, although the gold plating could hold up better. It seems to be wearing prematurely, particularly on the armrest and hook ends.

Components

Stock bridge is mediocre, but serviceable. Came with nice TKL archtop case.

7-11-04 Update: Gold plating is wearing very quickly. It has that aged look, but I really thought it would hold up better over time.

Overall Comments

Excellent value for the money, and a good archtop in the price range. More so than others I've owned, this banjo just keeps getting better as time goes on. I'm very happy with it. It's a different sounding banjo than the OB250 flat top, so be sure to play both if you're shopping.
