Gold Tone  Maple Mountain mm-150ln Banjo Reviews

Submitted by spencesrye (see all reviews from this person) on 3/30/2013

Where Purchased: The Music Center

Year Purchased: 2011
Price Paid: Don't Remember historic exchange rates / currency converter

Sound

Purchased to be able to do more sing along/folkie type stuff. It suits that very well. Nice sound, fairly loud, and very bright. Only drawback is that longneck. And not through any fault of the manufacturer. Playing a longneck simply requires more extension of the shoulder and causes a bit of shoulder pain subsequently for me.

Sound Rating: 9

Setup

Setup fine, action a little lower than I prefer. I think Goldtone would do a lot better to make their frailing scoop a bit more pronounced as well. Everything just seems real cramped at the frailing scoop on Goldtones.

Setup Rating: 7

Appearance

Absolutely a geat looking banjo. All maple, fine lustrous finish.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

Very dependable instrument. Would absolutely use it on gig without a backup, would just have to capo up for the majority of the vocal tunes I gig with.

Reliability Rating: 8

Customer Service

Called once about purchasing a regular scale neck for the banjo. Goldtone was very helpful in helping me to understand that it was cost prohibitive to go through with the neck change-out.

Customer Service: 7

Components

White lady/Electric tonering. Rings like you wouldn't believe.

Sound

I like to play old timey tunes and be able to sing with them comfortably. So the long neck was a perfect choice for the price. It has a very loud and very rich bass right out of the box. With a little love it makes that perfect cluckin' noise ;)

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

When I bought it I needed to raise the action for comfort but everything else was perfect. I bought a new adjustable tail piece to replace the no-knot and a med wght, Moon bridge to even out the tone "the bridge has really made the most difference". I also had a couple spikes installed for easy tuning and traded the Vega armrest in for a more comfortable engraved Gold Tone one.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

Simple and beautiful. The wood grain is gorgeous and the simple snowflake inlays get the job done.

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

This banjo will stand the test of time. the finish on the neck will take decades to wear off and all the hardware looks like it's going to be there for a long time. I use mine for every show with out any others.

Customer Service

Elderly Instruments gets you your stuff early!!! It's awesome!

Customer Service: 10

Components

Get and new bridge for it, that I would say is almost mandatory, the stock is nice, but if you want it to have a personality buy a good bridge.

Overall Comments

The best quality long neck banjo on the market in a reasonable price range. I would buy another one right away.

Sound

Always wanted a long neck, this one is sweet and full. Great for clawhammer, folk, and even scruggs style. White lady tone ring adds sparkle and volume.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

I ordered direct from Wayne at Gold Tone, Instrument was made custom, then shipped to Hawaii. Only needed to be tuned up and have head tightened slightly(I believe they purposely slacked everything for the long trip) If you can't tune up, give it up and get a kazoo!

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

Beautiful banjo, simple inlays, beautiful, well polished wood, heavy duty rim with nice double binding.

Reliability

Gold Tone banjos are tight and sturdy. I play this one often in church.

Full warrenty, I asked for a different head (remo frosted, instead of Fyberskin), no problem, I asked for spikes, no problem. I have delt with Gold Tone several times and they are definatly service oriented.
