Deering  Vega Senator Banjo Reviews

Submitted by Wildwolfe (see all reviews from this person) on 5/22/2015

Where Purchased: ebay

Year Purchased: 2015
Price Paid: 600 (Pounds) (bought USED) historic exchange rates / currency converter

Sound

Nice rich, warm, bright sound, long sustain. Fabulous sound overall, has a rich long sustain for classical music. When I attempt a fast pace a la hunter robertson style gives a great roar.

Only flaw so far is in the slow fiddle tunes due to sustain the notes appear to bleed into each other.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

Got it second hand but was well setup previous owner used as wall decoration.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

A few scratches but it is second hand. Good quality finish, simple looking design but good quality. Love the thick deering pots and the satin finish.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

Really well made I expect this to last for quite some time!

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Not dealt with the company.

Customer Service: not rated

Components

Components look of good quality and appear as if they will last. Got the banjo second hand and is over five years old and in fantastic nick.

Overall Comments

fab little banjo my last one was a goldtone wl 250 plus, this deering has a far richer sound easier playability better sustain. Surprising to me the banjo is actually smaller, substantially lighter.

The vega appears very well made and to boot can produce a lot of power if I want it too.

I got the "new" Derring case with mine...would have preferred the older TKL over the Golden Gate bumpUPDATE!!!!!!!!!I got rid of the crappy bump case. The hinges did not line up, the banjo rattled around inside. With what Deering charges for their excellent banjos, this is just a shame. They should go back to the TKL like I just bought from Elderly. rate the banjo a 10...the case a 4 for a 7 average

Overall Comments

I recomend it to all, I'd replace it if lost...way louder than my Little Wonder...way lighter than my Wildwood

Where Purchased: Turtle Hill Banjo

Year Purchased: 2006
Price Paid: 1100 ($US)

Sound

This banjo is not real powerful but has great tone. Holds tune very well. The sound is very pleasing without blasting my family into another room.

Sound Rating: 9

Setup

Setup by Dave at Turtle Hill. He spoke with me at length on the phone and delivered a great setup catered to my likes. He set the action low for me and it has no squeaks or buzzing or rattles.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

Nice looking banjo. (or I would not have bought it) The pictures on the web do it justice but not like holding in your hands.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

Have owned now for a few months. Play at least an hour a day. Still sounds good as new with no adjustments.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

Dave at Turtle Hill Banjo was a pleasure to work with, both via email and on the phone. He is very easy to talk to and really cares about the setup to the player and style, not just the sale of another instrument. He gave me some good advice about brand new instruments. He packaged well for shipment and arrived in perfect condition.

Components

This Senator is stock and I dont see any need to change. The hardware is good quality.

Overall Comments

I picked this banjo over the Deering Little Wonder for a couple of reasons.

1. It has a little wonder tone ring (and the little wonder does not)--go figure.
2. It has a star inlaid on fret #5 to add a little character over just using all dots.

My beginner banjo was a Deering Goodtime 2.
