Deering  Maple Blosson Tenor Banjo Banjo Reviews

Sound

I play New Orleans Jazz and Dixieland music (usually unamplified) with a five piece group. My Maple Blossom easily cuts through the tuba, drum, and the two lead horns. It's sound is big and full without being shrill or tinny. It sounds like the classic tenor banjo of the records with which I grew up.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

I'm not a big fan of tinkering with instruments. I play professionally a lot, so I have to know that my banjo will be right when I take it out of the case every night. My banjo was set up well when I bought it, and it still is. I haven't changed a thing.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

I love the way my banjo looks. It is all maple (hence the name) with an ebony fretboard. It is not as gaudy as many of the expensive expensive banjos. I would describe it's appearance as elegant. The only thing I would have changed is the binding. It's beautiful and well installed, but I wish it was off-white, yellow, or light brown (as opposed to stark white).

Appearance Rating: 9

Reliability

I play constantly, and the hardware and finish look exactly like they did when I bought the banjo.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

I've never tried (or had to) get it repaired. (thank goodness) I have had to deal with the company on two very minor matters. Both situations were resolved quickly and beautifully. (Thanks Carolina!)

Components

I don't know much about components, but I like everything here.

Overall Comments

I can't imagine owning another tenor. If it gets destroyed or stolen, I'll buy another one just like it.

Sound

This is without doubt the best banjo I have ever played for Irish Traditional Music. It has volume, sustain, it's crisp and is so consistent regarding tuning, intonation etc.

Sound Rating: 10

Setup

It was set-up perfectly but I made a few adjustments and found that with a clear head instead of a frosted head the sound was even crisper.

Setup Rating: 10

Appearance

It's a beautiful banjo, just enough ornate materials. It is curly maple and with a clear head this banjo definitely stands out.

Appearance Rating: 10

Reliability

I play professionally and it has had a hard 2 years on the road since I got it. There has never been a problem with it. It's so solid.

Reliability Rating: 10

Customer Service

The nicest people on the planet! Hats off to Carolina, Carol and Barry. So nice! I am waiting for my new custom Golden Classic Tenor and I've been talking to them alot, they are tops!

Customer Service: 10

Components

No need to upgrade anything

Overall Comments

I would recommend this banjo even though by the time it gets to Ireland it's expensive. There are a few good banjo makers in Ireland who specialise in tenor banjos but none of them compare with a Deering. They don't have the same sustain, volume and they look old before their time. Get a Maple Blossom, you won't ever ever regret it.
